Reborn as a Tough Army Wife-Chapter 747 - 742: Demanding Payment in Person
(I will also try to update more Chapters today, several unpredictable Chapters, at least three.)
Shuanzi’s followers, upon hearing this, questioned him back, "Boss, does that mean we’re gonna go to the countryside to look for someone?"
Shuanzi clenched his teeth and cast a glance at his underlings, bellowing, "Of course, we’re going! Do you think I’ll just let someone get away with swindling me?"
So, holding a grudge, Shuanzi took several of his men and headed to Luojia Village.
He had thought that Xu He, leaving the city and with a family to take care of, had nowhere else to go but Luojia Village. However, what he didn’t expect was that upon his arrival at Luojia Village, he learned that neither Xu He nor Luo Zhiming’s family had returned.
Moreover, the Luo Family had essentially all moved to the city, and no one was home.
Fortunately, Shuanzi had gathered accurate information; although no one from the Luo Family was at home, there were still people at the Xu family.
Mr. Xu and Duan Fenghua were both home.
Duan Fenghua had initially looked after Xu He in the city, but later Zhou Yunmei and Luo Zhiming came, and because of the children, squabbles broke out frequently. Fed up, Duan Fenghua, additionally alarmed by Xu He’s secret child-swapping, decided out of sight was out of mind. After a few days, she left and returned home.
When Shuanzi showed up at Xu He’s house, Duan Fenghua and her husband were busy with some household chores in the yard, and the next-door neighbor, idle and having nothing better to do, was visiting their home.
Hearing someone knock at the door, Duan Fenghua told Mr. Xu to answer it.
Upon seeing the visitor, Shuanzi gauged him, recalling the information he had about Xu He’s family. He guessed that the man might be Xu He’s father, but he still asked out loud, "Is this the Xu family’s house? Xu He’s house?"
Mr. Xu didn’t take to Shuanzi at first sight, finding his appearance flashy and not like a good person’s, so his attitude was poor, and he looked coldly at Shuanzi while nodding slightly, "Yes, may I ask who you are?"
Shuanzi could see Mr. Xu’s attitude but wasn’t concerned about tangling with him, nor did he care whether the attitude was good or not. Frowning slightly, he rudely introduced himself, "My name is Shuanzi; I’ve had a thing with Xu He. I’m here to find her over some business."
Upon hearing Shuanzi’s statement, Mr. Xu’s face darkened immediately, and he sternly rebuked him, "Don’t spout nonsense, my daughter is a married woman. What do you mean you ’had a thing’ with her? Besides, by the sound of your accent, you’re not a local, and by the looks of you, you’re no good. How could my daughter possibly know someone like you?"
In Mr. Xu’s mind, his daughter had always been as pure as ice and bone, honest and upright.
Even knowing she’d done some wrongs, he would never believe his daughter to be that fallen or consider her to be all that bad.
Although Mr. Xu could tell from her behavior that his daughter might not be as good as he imagined, deep down, he couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge it.
Hearing Mr. Xu’s words, Shuanzi also wondered about Xu He’s scheming; that she could turn the world upside down outside yet keep everything hidden so tightly at home, not even her own father had the slightest clue.
Since this was the case, Shuanzi seized the opportunity to expose Xu He’s true nature.
Disdainfully laughing, he looked at Mr. Xu and said, "Sir, I reckon you have no clue about the true character of your daughter, nor are you likely to be aware of the mess she’s made in the city, which is why you’re talking like this."
"You..." Mr. Xu, angered and at a loss for words by Shuanzi’s remark, gasped for breath before pointing at Shuanzi and retorting, "Don’t you slander her."
Shuanzi didn’t care whether his words upset Mr. Xu or not; instead, he continued, "I’m telling you the truth, my name is Shuanzi, and I’ve come here to ask Xu He for money."
"What money..."
Shuanzi deliberately spoke very clearly, "Your daughter was pregnant with my child and then agreed to sell the child to me. She took a sizable sum of money afterward. What I didn’t expect was that the son she gave me turned out to be stupid, obviously not worth that much money, and that’s why I’m here to reclaim it."
Mr. Xu was completely unaware of this whole affair and didn’t believe his daughter could be so bad. Hearing Shuanzi say this, he immediately objected, "What son of yours, what selling of the son? Stop this nonsense, don’t tarnish my daughter’s reputation."
"Your daughter’s reputation..." Shuanzi smirked dismissively, "Money talks, she’s probably willing to be with anyone, so much for reputation..."
"You..." Enraged, Mr. Xu couldn’t take it anymore and started driving the man away, "Get out of here! The Xu family’s home is no place for your rambling."
Due to Mr. Xu’s extreme anger, his voice kept getting louder, naturally alarming Duan Fenghua who was chatting with some village women nearby.
Duan Fenghua immediately stood up and walked towards the door, while wondering, "What’s going on? Who is it, to be so heated?"
As she reached the doorway and saw Shuanzi, her expression changed instantly.
Although she never had a direct confrontation with Shuanzi, she had seen him last time when he came to the Luo family to demand money. Since then, knowing his relationship with Xu He, she too had an impression of Shuanzi.
When Shuanzi saw the change in Duan Fenghua’s expression, he understood right away that she must recognize him.
He gave a slight smile and called out to Duan Fenghua, "Auntie."
Then he paused and with a sly grin remarked, "Actually, technically speaking, I could also call you ’mother-in-law in name,’ since I had a fling with Xu He, and your grandchild even calls me..."
"Shut your mouth," Duan Fenghua snapped.
Afterward, Duan Fenghua walked into the yard, barely able to smile at the women she was chatting with, "Aunt Zhou, something has come up at home, you should head back now. Come over again tomorrow."
The village women, naturally busybodies, were already eavesdropping on Mr. Xu’s conversation with Shuanzi. They heard a few sentences and were terribly curious. But seeing Duan Fenghua sending them away, they didn’t insist and stood up, heading towards the exit.
However, as they walked not far from the door, they began to gossip,
"Did you hear what that man just said?"
"I did. He’s implying he had an affair with the Xu family’s daughter, right?"
"It seems more than that. His last sentence seemed to indicate that the child the Xu family’s daughter recently bore was his."
"That can’t be true, the Xu family’s daughter doesn’t seem to be that kind of person, all pure and innocent, she wouldn’t do such things."
"Living in the city for a long time can make one go bad."
"That child must have been conceived when the young lady was still at home; she hadn’t even been in the city for a few months before she gave birth, so it shouldn’t have anything to do with that man."
As they were talking and discussing, a woman who lived not far from the Luo family suddenly exclaimed, "Wait, I remember now. I’ve seen that man before."
