Reborn as a Tough Army Wife-Chapter 734 - 729: The Midwife
Luo Zhiyong and another person entered the clinic, possibly because it was still too early, and the business wasn’t very good. There was only one female doctor there.
Upon seeing them coming in, the female doctor wasn’t particularly enthusiastic and just nodded slightly, motioning them to sit, then asked Luo Honglan, "Is there anything wrong with your health?"
This was a gynecological clinic, usually frequented by women seeking consultation.
"I..." Luo Honglan glanced at Luo Zhiyong, stammering and unsure what to say.
Just now, Luo Zhiyong had instructed her outside to probe the doctor and try to steer the conversation towards Xu He. However, Luo Honglan was an honest person and didn’t know how to indirectly extract information, thus began stammering as soon as she spoke.
Luo Zhiyong sighed softly, realizing he had to take over, and smilingly said to the doctor, "Doctor, this is my sister. There’s nothing wrong with her health, it’s my wife. My wife is likely going to give birth soon, and I wanted to ask if you could assist with the delivery."
Upon hearing the words ’assist with delivery,’ the doctor got visibly excited, stood up with a bang, pointed to the door, and bluntly told Luo Zhiyong, "We do not handle deliveries here. If you want gynecological consultation, sure, otherwise please leave immediately."
The doctor’s agitated demeanor left Luo Zhiyong curious. Ordinarily, clinics like this should also include midwifery services, and it was even advertised on their sign. If it really wasn’t possible, there was no need for such an overreaction. Her behavior suggested it might be due to a previous incident related to delivery that left her traumatized.
Thus, Luo Zhiyong felt even more compelled to ask, "Why is that? I see the sign outside includes delivery. Besides, Doctor, you handle complex gynecological cases, how can delivery be an issue?"
"I..." After her initial agitation, the doctor seemed to calm down slightly, sat back down, and waved her hands, saying, "I just don’t handle deliveries. If you need someone for delivery, go find someone else."
Luo Zhiyong gave her a cunning look, then deliberately started steering the conversation towards his intended topic, "Doctor, do you think I can’t pay, is that it? I’ve heard that just last month you helped a pregnant woman from the neighborhood with her delivery. Didn’t it go well? The baby was healthy and plump."
After Luo Zhiyong finished, he explicitly mentioned where Xu He lived, making it crystal clear to the doctor who he was referring to.
True enough, upon mention of that place, the doctor uncontrollably got agitated again and exclaimed, "That damned pregnant woman... it’s that woman, I now refuse to help anyone with delivery."
Upon hearing this, Luo Zhiyong felt that his random probing had indeed stumbled upon something significant. Instantly, he pushed further, "From the way you say it, Doctor, was there an issue during the delivery? I haven’t heard anything."
"Ah, it’s a long story, just know that family are not good people. They are extremely malicious, whether it’s with their own child or someone else’s, they don’t care. If you know that family, you’d better keep your distance from them." The doctor did not realize there was any connection between Luo Zhiyong and Xu He, considering him a stranger and just venting some frustrations. Then, she even kindly advised Luo Zhiyong,
"Moreover, as a doctor, let me advise you—if your wife is indeed going to have achild, it’s still best to go to a hospital. Don’t just randomly find a midwife, because if anything were to go wrong, neither you nor the midwife could handle the responsibility."
Luo Zhiyong clung to the doctor’s earlier words and pursued further, "What own child, other people’s child, what exactly is going on with that family? It seems to me they only have one child."
"Ah, it’s not easy for me to say much more, but rest assured, that family is capable of all sorts of despicable deeds." The doctor hesitated momentarily, then suddenly recalled how she had taken a child from that family, and remembered the heart-wrenching cries of the child’s parents after she used some tricks to tell them their child had died, she felt a twinge of remorse and couldn’t resist asking Luo Zhiyong, "But, do you actually know that family? I’m curious, how is that child doing? Are they well taken care of by their family?"
The more Luo Zhiyong listened, the more he realized there was an untold story, so he continued to probe, "If it’s their own child, of course they are being well taken care of. What kind of question is that..."
The doctor immediately retorted irritably, "What ’their own child’? I’m telling you, that family surely has some scheme going, that child definitely isn’t their own."
"I..."
This time, the doctor didn’t want to say more, worried that talking too much might lead to slip-ups, and waved them off, "Never mind, no more talk. If you are not here for consultation, please leave. I’m busy."
Knowing further interrogation would yield nothing more, Luo Zhiyong called Luo Honglan and left.
However, even from these simple queries, Luo Zhiyong had learned quite a bit.
From what the female doctor said, it was clear that there were complications during Xu He’s childbirth, deceiving Luo Zhiming about many things.
But since Luo Zhiyong didn’t know the full story, he could only guess that there might have been issues during childbirth, perhaps the baby was not a boy, or there was something wrong with the baby. Xu He, wishing to remain with the Luo Family, might have resorted to swapping the baby.
Still, Luo Zhiyong never expected that Xu He had played such a clever gambit with this situation.
But since Luo Zhiyong was intent on finding Luo Cuilan, having gleaned some clues, he headed home with Luo Honglan.
After getting home, Fang Pingying listened to Luo Zhiyong’s account and also felt the situation was somewhat tricky.
To expose Xu He’s plot was actually quite straightforward—now that the child had been born, whether it was her biological child or a child sourced from elsewhere, it certainly wasn’t Luo Zhi’s. Just a trip to the hospital for a test could clear it all up.
Yet, she worried about what exactly Xu He might have done to Luo Cuilan. If Xu He had really confined Luo Cuilan somewhere, getting too aggressive on their end might provoke Xu He to harm Luo Cuilan on a whim.
Hence, Fang Pingying agreed with Luo Zhiyong’s approach to not stir things up for now, but secretly had someone keep an eye on Xu He. If Xu He really had locked Luo Cuilan away, she was determined to take the time to investigate.
However, what terrified Fang Pingying and the others was that the person she sent to monitor Xu He didn’t observe any suspicious activity for almost a week.
