Reborn as a Tough Army Wife-Chapter 658 - 653: The Matter of Sending Money
Seeing that Li Aihua and the others didn’t quite believe him, Luo Dashan made a firm promise as if to reassure them, "After all, I am a father myself. I can’t just watch my son’s home be destroyed time and again. Mothers-in-law, I will handle this matter properly."
Luo Dashan had spoken thus, and Li Yuchun and Li Aihua found it hard to press further. After all, Luo Zhiyong had just returned, his injuries were severe, and they couldn’t really just turn him away like that.
Now that Fang Pingying had decided to be with Luo Zhiyong again, she naturally couldn’t avoid being scolded by Li Aihua and Li Yuchun. Fang Pingying let them say what they wanted, not responding to anything. She just appeared unaffected by their words, and when the two of them grew tired of talking, they both ended up angrily ignoring Fang Pingying.
And so, Luo Zhiyong settled in.
However, since they hadn’t been together for so long and due to his injuries, they didn’t share a room. Fang Pingying arranged for him to stay in the small cottage that Luo Honglan used to live in, right next to hers.
Luo Honglan was the one mostly taking care of Luo Zhiyong. She would go back to sleep at night, and bright and early in the morning, she would come over to help Luo Zhiyong and the two little ones wash up and brush their teeth, while Fang Pingying would prepare breakfast.
By late morning, when Fang Pingying would have to go to either the pastry shop or the supermarket to get busy, Luo Honglan would come back to take care of Luo Zhiyong and the two little ones.
The original nanny at home had only agreed to take care of the two children. Seeing that there was now a man in the house, an injured one requiring her care, she refused to do the job. Fang Pingying couldn’t find a replacement on such short notice. Besides, with Luo Zhiyong’s mobility issues, nobody would be able to take care of him as conveniently as his own sister, and since Luo Honglan was also willing to help, Fang Pingying did not object.
During the period of Luo Zhiyong’s recovery, life at the Fang Family was relatively peaceful, with busy and bustling days without much exceptional happening. However, over at the rural Luo Family home, things were not so calm for Zhou Yunmei and Xu He.
It had been several months since Luo Zhiming had left to work away from home for the New Year, and Xu He was visibly pregnant. Xu He was never keen on doing chores, and as her belly grew, she was practically unwilling to do anything. Around the seventh month of pregnancy, she wished Zhou Yunmei would serve her meals right beside her bed every day.
Actually, Xu He’s pregnancy wasn’t yet seven months along; it was only six months, since she initially added an extra month to deceive the Luo Family.
Zhou Yunmei was also not fond of attending to others, and considering what Xu He did during the New Year, Zhou Yunmei could not easily forgive her. Nevertheless, because Xu He was carrying the hard-won child of Luo Zhiming in her womb and, as her belly continued to grow day by day, Zhou Yunmei had no choice but to look after her.
Such frustrating days were uncomfortable for Zhou Yunmei. Plus, being a person who could not easily endure such things, she often had small arguments and big fights with her daughter-in-law at home, becoming a source of gossip and spectacle for the villagers.
One day, Xu He had another quarrel with Zhou Yunmei at the Luo Family residence, feeling extremely irritated. She packed up some belongings with the intent to stay at her mother’s house for a few days.
When Xu He arrived at her parents’ home, her mother Duan Fenghua had just returned from outside. She immediately pulled Xu He into the house, mentioning that she had something to ask her.
Xu He saw Duan Fenghua in such a hurry and said with some impatience, "Mom, what are you doing? Stop pulling me like that, I’m heavily pregnant."
Duan Fenghua glanced at Xu He’s belly and to be honest, she wasn’t really looking forward to this child, because Xu He had once deceived Luo Zhiming by asking Duan Fenghua to speak with the doctors at the town’s health clinic, and she had no choice but to reveal the truth about this child’s origin to Duan Fenghua.
According to Duan Fenghua’s opinion at that time, she did not approve of Xu He keeping the child. Although she was not satisfied with her son-in-law Luo Zhiming, she was even less satisfied with Xu He having any involvement with someone from the underworld. She would rather there be no child at all.
After all, she had been around for so many years, she knew that the truth cannot be hidden forever. She always felt that if this child were born, its parentage might be exposed one day, and then no one would know what to do.
But now that things had gotten to this point, there wasn’t much she could say.
After pulling Xu He into the house and sitting her down, she asked uncertainly, "Hehua, did you tell me the other day that since Zhiming went to work out of town, he’s only sent money back once?"
When it came to this matter, Xu He got angry and cursed without goodwill, "Yes, that damn guy. He promised so nicely when he was home, saying he would earn money for me and our son to spend. That very month he left, he sent 20 yuan back, and then there was no word from him after that, not even a letter, not caring whether I’m alive or dead at home. Who knows if he’s messing around with some woman in the city."
Hearing her say this, Duan Fenghua hurriedly said, "Hehua, this is not good. You are so far along now, what if Luo Zhiming really gets mixed up with another woman, what will you do?"
Xu He mentioned Luo Zhiming fooling around with other women just casually; she wasn’t particularly concerned and said indifferently, "I’d like to see him try. He wouldn’t dare leave me. Anyway, I’m eating his mother’s food and living in his mother’s house, and the house even has his mother to take care of it. I don’t care what he’s up to outside."
Duan Fenghua was silent, gave Xu He a look, then asked again, "How’s your family’s situation lately? The dishes, the snacks you want to eat, has your mother-in-law bought them for you?"
"That she did," Xu He answered truthfully. "Although that old lady is tough, she still values the child in my belly. Whatever I want to eat, if she goes to the market, she’ll buy it for me, sometimes even the expensive stuff."
Remembering what she had just heard outside, Duan Fenghua snorted and asked Xu He, "Where does she get the money?"
Xu He felt that Duan Fenghua’s expression was a bit odd. She gave her a puzzled look but still answered truthfully, "Luo Cuilan gets paid some money every month for babysitting, and she also has some private savings. I suppose she’s using those."
Upon hearing this, Duan Fenghua heaved a long sigh and said, "My girl, it’s just you who are naive, believing whatever those two, mother and son, tell you. Today, when I was chatting with the villagers at the village entrance, I heard them say that Zhou Yunmei goes to the post office to withdraw money on the first of every month. Many people in the village have seen her. I suspect that the money is what Luo Zhiming has been sending her secretly."
Xu He heard this and gave a slight smile, dismissing the idea outright, "Impossible. If Luo Zhiming sent money back, he wouldn’t send it to his mother instead of me."
