Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 576 - 296: Contradiction_2
The weather was so pleasant, and their days were looking up—truly, there was no reason for frustration.
Lian Manman laughed, her gaze falling on the doorway of the Upper Room, where she saw a large white face inside. Lian Manman was startled into an irregular heartbeat.
It turned out to be Lady Zhou, silently standing on the threshold. She was dressed in dark blue, standing in the shadow of the door, making it difficult to notice someone there at a glance.
It’s not a ghost, not a ghost, Lian Manman slowly exhaled, one hand patting her chest.
After collecting herself, Lian Manman couldn’t help but sigh in relief internally. She had no idea how long Lady Zhou had been standing in the doorway, her expression so somber. If Lian Yeye and Lian Xiuxiu had continued to argue just now, Lady Zhou would probably have come out to support Lian Xiuxiu.
In that case, both Lian Yeye and Lady Zhao would have undoubtedly been subjected to a harsh scolding—as for them, they likely wouldn’t have been spared either.
Lian Manman finished chopping the vegetable leaves and wild greens, fetched two ladles of bran, and mixed it with water, vegetable leaves, and wild greens. Just as she was about to bring it to the chicken coop, she saw Lian Shouxin walking in from the main gate.
Lian Shouxin’s shoes were caked with mud, and there were splatters of mud all over his pants as well. The vegetable garden was very muddy because of yesterday’s heavy rain. When Lian Manman went to the vegetable garden earlier, Lian Shouxin didn’t let her go inside; he had picked the vegetable leaves and wild greens himself, handing them to Lian Manman—he was worried she would get mud on her feet.
That’s why Lian Manman’s feet and pants were clean.
Lian Shouxin, still caring for his child after all.
"Dad, are you back?" Lian Manman smiled.
"Ah, I came back for the hoe." Lian Shouxin said, heading toward the garden.
"Old Fourth!" Lady Zhou called out from inside the door.
"Mom." Lian Shouxin stopped in his tracks and looked carefully before making out Lady Zhou’s position.
"You finally decided to come back? Staying so far from me, are you afraid that I’ll eat you, or are you worried that your wife is going to badger you now that you have money?" Lady Zhou, as always, didn’t have a single kind word when she opened her mouth to speak to her sons.
Lian Shouxin had grown used to Lady Zhou’s way of speaking and automatically translated her words to what a normal person would say—which meant she wanted him to come over to her.
Lian Shouxin then walked to the doorway of the Upper Room.
"Mom, what is it? I still need to go weed."
A fairly ordinary phrase, but in front of Lady Zhou, it was riddled with faults.
"If I don’t call you, you have nothing to do, but the moment I call you, you have things to do. If you’re annoyed by this old thing who refuses to die, just say it directly." Lady Zhou pointed at Lian Shouxin’s nose and scolded.
Lady Zhou was always unreasonable in this way, and Lian Shouxin, helpless, let his shoulders slump subconsciously. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Only when she saw Lian Shouxin bowing his head in submission did Lady Zhou feel somewhat satisfied.
"I have something to tell you." Lady Zhou said, turning around and leading the way into the house.
Lian Shouxin looked back and just happened to see Lian Manman making a face at him. Helpless once again, he followed Lady Zhou into the house.
As soon as they entered the house, Lian Manman instantly put down what she was holding and quickly ran over, trying to eavesdrop on what Lady Zhou would say to Lian Shouxin.
Unexpectedly, just as Lian Manman reached the doorway of the Upper Room, Lian Xiuxiu came walking out.
"Where are you going?" Lian Xiuxiu blocked Lian Manman.
"I’m going to see my dad," Lian Manman replied.
"Go do whatever you’re supposed to do. Your grandma is talking to your dad, why are you going in there?" As she spoke, Lian Xiuxiu pushed Lian Manman away, clearly not wanting her to hear what Lady Zhou and Lian Shouxin were saying.
Lian Xiuxiu stood at the door and didn’t move, so Lian Manman couldn’t eavesdrop. Her curiosity grew, but it wasn’t appropriate for her to barge in, so she had to back off. While feeding the chickens, she strained her ears, listening to the noises coming from the Upper Room.
Lady Zhou’s voice fluctuated between high and low as it intermittently drifted from the Upper Room. The louder tones were scolding Lian Shouxin; the softer tones, however, were indecipherable.
A full quarter of an hour passed before Lian Shouxin emerged from the Upper Room, his head hanging in dejection.
Lian Manman quickly stepped forward and pulled Lian Shouxin into the West Wing Room. Knowing that Lian Shouxin had been scolded, Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi also followed them inside.
"Dad, did Grandma scold you again?" Lian Manman asked. "What for?"
"For nothing at all," Lian Shouxin murmured dourly.
When Lady Zhou scolded her daughter-in-law, she always had some sort of reason, even if it was nitpicking. But when she scolded her son, she never felt the need for a reason. She scolded whenever she felt like it.
Even if no reason was necessary, there should still be some cause for it.
"What exactly did she say to you?" Lady Zhang asked.
"Nothing... she just said I’ve been avoiding home the past few days, that I’ve been hiding from her or something. She’s probably just upset and taking it out on me," Lian Shouxin said as he stood up and walked outside. "I need to go back and tidy up the garden."
Lady Zhou and Lian Manman kept pressing for answers, but Lian Shouxin had become tight-lipped.
"Either there really is nothing wrong," Lian Manman said to Lady Zhang. "Or maybe Grandma said something that Dad feels he can’t talk about."
"What exactly did your Grandma say?" Lady Zhang nodded, her heart also filled with doubts.
As dusk approached, Old Master Lian and the field workers all returned, their shoes and the hems of their trousers caked with mud. Naturally, none of them looked very happy.
In the presence of Old Master Lian, no one dared to say a word. But in private, they all started to grumble.
"We couldn’t even properly step in the fields; other families didn’t go into their fields, yet just we did, exhausting ourselves half to death for the little bit of land we managed to plant."
"Our dad just hates idle hands; he sees other families have finished planting and thinks we started too late. Mark my words, even if knives were to rain from the sky tomorrow, Dad would still make us go out and work in the fields."
"At this time of year, delaying for half a day doesn’t matter. It’s not just that Dad himself hates idleness, but also he can’t stand seeing anyone else resting."
Inside the Upper Room, Old Master Lian puffed on his dry tobacco pipe while his face looked as black as the bottom of a pot.
"Those damn kids, always cutting corners, just cause trouble. When will this land get planted...? They shouldn’t have been sent to the fields at all, they can barely get any work done and are just dragging their feet! Those good-for-nothing sons, if they keep this up, I’ll just divide the family!"
Old Master Lian angrily tapped his pipe against the bed’s edge.
