Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1655 - 844: Turning Against Each Other (Part 2)
"They cursed terribly. Later, when my grandpa and grandma said a couple of words, they started arguing with them. Between the lines, they suggested that the failed marriage arrangement was caused by Yin Suo’s family interfering, and that my grandpa and grandma were also to blame. They even accused them of favoring their daughter and siding with outsiders."
"They also said that if they loved their daughter so much, why not let her sit at the family hearth. The more they argued, the more heated it became. I listened to it all and then just left." Finally, Lian Yeye added, "Just as I got home, Liulang showed up. I guess after I left, things got even worse."
Lian Yeye returned home from the old house and casually mentioned to Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao that the marriage arrangement for Si Lang fell through and the old house was in an uproar again. Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao didn’t take it seriously—after all, arguments in the old house happened every three days, a big one every five days—it was a common occurrence. It wasn’t until Liulang sought out Lian Shouli that they realized the matter was serious this time.
Lian Yeye recounted what happened, and Lian Shouxin had already gotten the news and returned from the fields. Lady Zhang explained the situation to Lian Shouxin.
"The marriage fell through? It’s not a big deal, how many matchmakings are settled in just one go?... Did Suspicions City cause trouble? Our own family members arguing with each other?" Lian Shouxin listened with a furrowed brow.
"His third uncle has already gone over there,... it’s likely Old Master Lian can’t control it, you know the temperament of Second Master’s family..." Lady Zhang said to Lian Shouxin.
"Alright, I’ll go take a look." Lian Shouxin nodded, not even bothering to change his clothes before heading out.
Lian Manman knew that both Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang were worried about Old Master Lian. Old Master Lian was getting on in years, and he had been ill several times over the past year, his vitality greatly diminished. It was evident he wasn’t someone who would live long. Both were concerned that a surge of anger could lead to a mishap.
"Sister Manman, are you going? I want to go take a look." Lian Yeye said to Lian Manman.
"Then I’ll go have a look too." Lian Manman thought for a while and said.
Lian Manman had Xiao Qing pack two bundles of snacks, and together with Lian Yeye, they followed Lian Shouxin to the old house.
The moment they reached the village entrance, they could faintly hear the familiar sound of arguing. Lian Shouxin sighed, and Lian Manman rubbed her forehead. Recently, the old house had been relatively restrained, although arguments were frequent, rarely were they so ostentatious. This suggested that the issue was indeed quite serious this time.
Upon listening closely, the sound of the argument was somewhat different from usual, where Lady Zhou’s voice typically dominated, today it seemed that Lian Shouyi and Lady He were taking the lead.
Everyone couldn’t help but quicken their pace.
As they stepped through the main gate of the old house, Lady Chiang walked out holding Da Niuniu from the Upper Room, clearly waiting for them.
"Fourth Uncle, thank goodness you’re here. Please go inside quickly and take a look, my grandfather is furious, he can’t keep the peace..." Lady Chiang’s face was tear-stained, trying to console Da Niuniu in her arms while speaking to Lian Shouxin. Da Niuniu clung tightly to Lady Chiang’s shoulder, appearing terribly frightened.
Listening from outside was one thing, but as the door curtain of the east room was lifted, the rushing sounds of shouting and cursing, combined with the tense and violent atmosphere, would make even adults with a timid nature feel their hearts pounding.
Since moving out of the old house, it has been a long time since Lian Manman experienced such an atmosphere firsthand, it took her a while to adjust.
Inside the east room, everyone stood on the floor, Lian Shouyi and Lady He had reddened faces, exuding a fury, seemingly about to rush onto the brick bed. Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, and Lian Shouli stood in front of the bed, blocking Lian Shouyi and Lady He, while Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou remained seated at the head of the bed. Old Master Lian’s brow was furrowed, and his forehead’s veins throbbed. Lady Zhou, half-sitting, was fiercely scolding Lian Shouyi. Lian Shouyi and Lady He weren’t to be outdone, though they didn’t exchange curses directly with Lady Zhou, their words and tone were aggressive nonetheless.
As for Si Lang, he stood behind Lian Shouyi and Lady He, pursing his lips without speaking. Yet, his eyes were bloodshot, glaring hatefully at Old Master Lian.
Although his eyes were fixed on Old Master Lian, Lian Manman who observed from the side couldn’t help but feel a tightness in her chest. Instinctively, she sensed that the true danger lay with Si Lang, not with the gesticulating Lian Shouyi and Lady He.
Whether Old Master Lian felt Si Lang’s hatred or not, Lian Manman looked at him. Old Master Lian avoided everyone’s eyes, seemingly intentionally.
"What are you all arguing so loudly for, you can hear it from the village! Everyone sit down, and talk it over calmly!" Lian Shouxin stepped into the room and seeing the chaos, he sternly commanded.
Lian Shouxin’s shout was indeed effective. Lian Shouyi and Lady He immediately fell silent, turning to look at Lian Shouxin, leaving only Lady Zhou’s voice echoing.
Seeing that Lian Shouxin had silenced Lian Shouyi and Lady He upon arrival, Lady Zhou’s spirit was buoyed, her voice even rose higher, her curses more vehement.
"...You’ve grown wings, heartless wretch, I raised you with all my efforts, yet you rip me apart like this, should’ve just drowned you in the piss bucket at birth..."
All her curses were directed at Lian Shouyi, with the occasional jab at Lady He, but not a single curse was aimed at Si Lang.
"Enough, stop cursing." Old Master Lian, who hadn’t spoken, finally told Lady Zhou to give it a rest.
This time, Lady Zhou surprisingly knew when to stop and truly ceased cursing Lian Shouyi and Lady He, instead bursting into tears.
"Why did you only come now after we sent for you..., " Lady Zhou wailed at Lian Shouxin, "Can’t you see, your father and I, we’re being driven to our deaths... ah..."
