Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1645 - 839: Si Lang’s Matchmaking (Part 2)
No need to ask, Lian Yeye knew that these were Lian Manman’s belongings, which were lent to Si Lang today.
In addition, there were two donkey carts parked at the old residence’s entrance. Lian Yeye recognized one of them, as it belonged to Shang Huaide and Younger Lady Zhou’s family. The other cart, which looked slightly rougher than the Shang Family’s cart, was unfamiliar to her.
Apart from the fellow from Lian Manman’s family, there was also a group of teenagers craning their necks to peer into the yard of the old residence. Thanks to the workers sent by Lian Manman’s family, the village’s girls and daughters-in-law were occupied; otherwise, the crowd at the entrance would have doubled.
Lian Yeye, seeing this scene, guessed that the girl’s family had arrived. She quickened her pace to confirm, and indeed, it was true. The unfamiliar donkey cart had been brought by the girl’s family.
"...The cart belongs to the girl’s elder sister’s family. Her brother-in-law drove them here," said the cart driver from the Lian Family, recognizing Lian Yeye.
Badao Miaozi is surrounded by mountains, and most farmstead families there raise donkeys and use donkey carts.
"They drove all the way here, didn’t you go to pick them up for nothing?" Lian Yeye asked.
"Not for nothing," the driver laughed, "Once we met them, they all rode in our cart."
Lian Yeye nodded, understanding that Si Lang borrowed the cart and mule from Lian Manman’s family to show off in front of the prospective bride. Not only did it meet them far out and bring them back, but even just parked at the entrance, it was impressive enough.
Ordinary farmstead families couldn’t manage such a grand occasion for matchmaking.
Lian Yeye was eager to see the new bride, so she hurried into the yard of the old residence.
Upon entering, she saw Lian Yaya and Liulang. They were carrying firewood from the pigsty stack towards the Upper Room, seemingly preparing to cook a meal. Both greeted Sister Yeye upon seeing her.
Lian Yeye was about to ask the two kids some questions when she saw Lady He poking her head out of the Upper Room’s outer space.
"Yeye, why are you only here now? Where’s your mother? Hurry up, we’re about to cook!" Lady He was dressed especially smartly today, her face bubbling with joy that she couldn’t suppress. Seeing Lian Yeye, her eyes brightened, and she called out loudly.
Lian Yeye rolled her eyes, ignoring Lady He’s words, and walked straight into the Upper Room, shaking off Lady He’s hand.
"I’m looking for my dad," stated Lian Yeye, not caring what Lady He said, as she pulled the curtain and went into the east room.
In the east room, on the edge of the kang, sat Old Master Lian, Shang Huaide, and then Lady Zhou and Younger Lady Zhou, whose daughter Shang Baorong was also there. Lian Shouren, Lian Shouyi, Lian Shouli, Lian Jizu, and Si Lang were sitting on stools.
As Lian Yeye entered the room, she first felt the joyful atmosphere, then saw the girl’s family.
Old Master Wang was seated on the kang with Old Master Lian and Shang Huaide. The stocky matchmaker sat with Lady Zhou and Younger Lady Zhou. On the edge of the kang, the Wang family’s daughter sat with her head slightly bowed, next to her elder sister, while Shang Baorong accompanied them in conversation. The Wang family’s brother-in-law sat alongside Lian Jizu and Si Lang on stools.
Lian Shouyi and Si Lang, much like Lady He, were brimming with joy, especially Si Lang, who couldn’t help but glance at Miss Wang repeatedly.
Lian Yeye entered the room, greeted everyone, not caring whether Lady Zhou and the others responded, and went straight to the edge of the kang to sit next to Shang Baorong, starting to size up Miss Wang and her family members.
At this moment, both families were engaged in conversation, undisturbed by Lian Yeye’s arrival.
"...We have a few acres of mountain land, and then there’s the fruit orchards..." Old Master Wang spoke with a dark complexion and a strong Western accent. What he referred to as fruit orchards was a dialect from the west, which meant fruit tree gardens.
Badao Miaozi is mountainous, so farmland is scarce; many people rely on growing fruit trees for a living.
"Is your Old Fourth’s wife’s family also dealing with fruit orchards?" Younger Lady Zhou asked Lady Zhou.
"Yes, her family takes care of the fruit trees," Lady Zhou nodded.
"Fruit trees are good; life is pretty comfortable at Old Zhang family. In the future, when the kids want some fruit trees, that’ll be convenient," commented Lian Shouyi. Because Lady Zhang’s family has orchards, Lian Shouyi often enjoyed fresh, seasonal fruits, "Old Wang brother, what kinds of fruit trees do you grow?"
"Just plum trees, and a few pear and jujube trees. Our land is mountainous, can’t compare to others," replied Old Master Wang.
"Old Zhang’s place is mountainous too," stated Si Lang, "I know nurturing fruit trees is tiring, and mountain lands are hard to cultivate. Here it’s good, no fruit trees, but if you want something, two miles to town, and there’s everything. We don’t grow fruit trees here, but they’re sold in town. The land here is good for farming."
While saying this, Si Lang’s gaze again fell on Miss Wang.
"...I’m the steward in a shop in the county town, and have a few people under me. The work is clean and leisure, and the salary is not little. Once I’m settled, in a year or two, I’ll take over that shop. Farming is a small matter..."
"Mountain people, ah, are honest and hardworking, like our Old Fourth wife’s family. I and her father, we’re old buddies for many years. Knowing you’re mountain folks, I didn’t even check with the matchmaker, just said okay..." Old Master Lian seemed to unintentionally interrupt Si Lang’s words, speaking to Old Master Wang.
