Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1605 - 818: Reminiscing About Old Times
"As you get older, you wish to return to your roots. I don’t plan to go back," replied Shang Huaide.
"Your third aunt and uncle are planning to move to Thirty Mile Camp," Old Master Lian added.
Lian Manman was slightly surprised. It turned out that the visit of Younger Lady Zhou and her family this time wasn’t just a simple family visit, but they actually planned to move to Thirty Mile Camp. But Shang Huaide mentioned returning to roots, shouldn’t they move back to Xianghe Tun? Why are they planning to move here?
"When we moved out back then, we sold the house in Xianghe Tun. Now that we want to move back, they won’t sell it back to us. During the years we were gone, that house was rebuilt, and the current residents aren’t even the ones who bought it from us.... It’s hard to find a house that suits us. Right now, we’re renting someone else’s place to live," Shang Huaide said, with a hint of sadness in his voice.
Being away for over a decade, returning to the hometown only to find that everything has changed, feels sorrowful to anyone.
"Renting isn’t a long-term solution. Not to mention, in Xianghe Tun, we hardly know anyone now," Shang Huaide continued.
"We didn’t have many relatives to begin with, and any who share our surname are more distantly related now. These years apart have made us grow even more distant. Living there, it’s hard for me to even drop by someone’s house for a chat," Younger Lady Zhou chimed in. "In this village, we have our second and first sisters, so we decided to come to you."
With that explanation, Lian Manman understood. Their hometown no longer had close relatives, making it inconvenient to live there. With Lady Da Zhou and Lady Zhou in Thirty Mile Camp, they decided to move here.
We must say, it’s a pretty shrewd decision. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Although the Lian Family Old Mansion isn’t what it used to be, Lian Shouxin’s branch has prospered. Moreover, there’s the Wu Family, a deep-rooted and influential presence in Thirty Mile Camp. The Shang Family, being a solitary name, would naturally benefit from the consideration shown by these two families, ensuring smooth sailing for them.
Additionally, if Shang Huaide wishes to continue his livelihood, and with their youngest son and daughter at marriageable ages, they need the support of relatives to arrange good marriages.
It’s all quite understandable. You can’t blame them for coming here so soon after returning.
As Lian Manman thought about it, she glanced at Lady Zhou. It seemed that Lady Zhou got along better with Younger Lady Zhou than with Lady Da Zhou. In fact, Lady Da Zhou’s personality differed from Lady Zhou’s, whereas Younger Lady Zhou’s temper seemed quite similar to Lady Zhou’s.
"Your third aunt and uncle have already been to your eldest aunt’s home..." Old Master Lian informed Lian Shouxin.
Shang Huaide and Younger Lady Zhou, upon reaching Thirty Mile Camp, first went to Wu Yuchang’s home and had lunch with the Wu Family. Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou were also invited to join them. The day was spent in a congenial chat among Lady Da Zhou, Lady Zhou, and Younger Lady Zhou. Naturally, they shared their plans to move to Thirty Mile Camp with the Wu Family, and Shang Huaide and Younger Lady Zhou also entrusted Wu Yuchang to help them find a house.
"...We’re planning to buy land in the village later on," Old Master Lian informed Lian Shouxin of Shang Huaide and Younger Lady Zhou’s plans.
"Yes," Shang Huaide nodded, "Once we settle in, I plan to see if I can open a tailor shop in town."
At this, Shang Huaide laughed twice.
"There’s no outsider here, so I won’t sugarcoat things. Over the years, we’ve managed to save up some money, enough for the two of us and the kids to live on in the future. But, as the saying goes, ’living off savings will deplete them.’ I have this skill and have always earned a living from it. In the future, I still plan to make a living this way," Shang Huaide said with a smile.
Lian Manman had listened attentively to the chitchat from Wu Yuchang’s Wife, and knew that when Shang Huaide married Younger Lady Zhou, he already had some assets. It seemed that over the years, they became wealthier. Judging from his words and plans, he was a very savvy, calculative, and frugal person.
In fact, when Lady Da Zhou and Lady Zhou were first married, the Wu Family and Lian Family were much more prosperous than the Shang Family. But over time, those two families’ fortunes declined, whereas Younger Lady Zhou’s continued to improve.
The rise and fall of the Zhou Family’s fortune could be seen through the marriages of the three Zhou sisters.
The eldest and first to marry was Lady Da Zhou, who married into the landlord Wu Family, which was a prominent family in Thirty Mile Camp, with many relatives. Next was Lady Zhou, and even though Old Master Lian came from a family of scholars, he was raised as an orphan and climbed from apprentice to store manager, accumulating his own wealth. Then came Younger Lady Zhou, and Shang Huaide, whose forebears were tailors, had no brothers to support him, nor was their family thriving, so he also took up the tailoring trade.
