Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1557 - 792: Old Habits Die Hard
In the evening, after the family members returned to their respective rooms, Lian Manman looked at the account book under the lamp for a while before washing up and resting in the inner room. Originally, this inner room was shared by her and Lian Zhizhi, but now that it’s just her, she found it a bit hard to get used to at first; it has only recently become better.
As for Xiao Xi and Xiao Qing, the two maidservants, they slept in the outer chamber of the west room, while the other two maidservants, Ji Xiang and Ru Yi, slept in the courtyard at night.
The lamp by Lian Manman’s side had already been extinguished, but the lamp in the east room was still lit.
Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang were also lying in bed, but a candle was still burning on the candlestick in front of the bed. Lian Shouxin went to bed first, but couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning on the bed. After Lady Zhang got into bed and saw Lian Shouxin in this state, she didn’t sleep either. The couple whispered to each other in the dim light.
"Third Uncle said that Old Master was ill; I wonder if it’s true or false?" Lian Shouxin said to Lady Zhang.
When she heard Lian Shouxin say this, Lady Zhang knew that Lian Shouxin was still worried about Old Master Lian.
Human emotions are so complex, especially among blood relatives; it’s hard to cut and even harder to untangle. Especially for someone like Lian Shouxin with his character and conduct, he almost doesn’t understand hatred, and resentment doesn’t linger long in his heart.
The reason people like him are called benevolent and kind is that as time goes by, he infinitely magnifies the goodness and kindness of others, while also minimizing or even erasing the wrongs done to him and his family.
"That third uncle, he probably wouldn’t lie," Lady Zhang said.
Lady Zhang was also a kind person, not dismissing Lian Shouli entirely because of some of his mistakes.
"But, as for how he got sick and anything else, Third Uncle probably didn’t see it himself," Lady Zhang thought for a moment and added.
"Old Master and the Old Mistress are different; he wouldn’t fake something like this," said Lian Shouxin.
Even as he said this, Lian Shouxin felt a bit uncertain. People change, and the current Old Master Lian was quite different from the father he remembered. In his impression, Old Master Lian was a very reasonable and proud person. But today, some of Wu Lang’s words were quite blunt.
According to Old Master Lian’s previous temperament, after hearing Wu Lang say those words, he wouldn’t have asked for anything for Lian Shouren or Lian Jizu. Yet today, Old Master Lian still asked, throwing aside reason and pride.
Lian Shouxin believed it was because Old Master Lian had become old. Moreover, Old Master Lian would not have done this for anyone, including himself, except for Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu.
For Lian Shouren and Lian Jizu, Old Master Lian was willing to risk it all.
So perhaps it wasn’t entirely impossible that there was a bit of deception. Not complete deception, but perhaps some exaggeration in front of Lian Shouli, making him know, making him soften and relent, that was possible too.
But what if Old Master Lian really was ill, and quite seriously? 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Lian Shouxin suddenly sat up in the bed.
Because the room was warm, the bed was heated, and the bedding was thick, Lian Shouxin wore only a set of underclothes to sleep. Lady Zhang hurriedly sat up too, draping a large coat over Lian Shouxin’s back.
"What’s with the sudden startle? The room is warm, but it’s still winter. You could catch a chill," Lady Zhang said, as she wrapped the coat around Lian Shouxin, covering both his shoulders snugly.
"You say that about me, but why did you get up too? Quickly lie down. I’m strong; you’re not. You should lie down; don’t catch a chill," Lian Shouxin felt a warmth in his heart, holding the coat’s lapels in his hands and talking to Lady Zhang at the same time.
"Forget it, I napped a bit during the day, and now I can’t sleep. I’ll sit with you for a while," Lady Zhang also put on a large coat and sat with Lian Shouxin.
Tonight was clear, and through the glazed windows, one could vaguely see a crescent in the sky. The clear white moonlight spilled down, casting a tint of pale blue on the dense black night.
"...In his heart, he only cares about the first household. For the sake of those two, he would do anything. But the ones who worry Old Master the most, the ones who take him the most for granted, are also those two. Right now, they manage because they rely entirely on Old Master to get by, that’s why they’re docile," Lian Shouxin spoke lightly, gazing out the window.
"We hold Old Master in regard, treat him as an elder with respect and filial duty, but no matter what we do, we can’t change his heart.... I’m not asking him to favor me, I don’t think that way. But he shouldn’t always take us for granted. I am his son, but now he treats strangers of another surname better than he treats me."
