Rebirth: The New Bride Wants A Divorce-Chapter 559: Benefiting from them
After fooling around for a while, Daniel finally returned to finishing his work. Anna stayed beside him, this time quietly accompanying him and making sure she didn’t distract him again.
By the time he wrapped everything up and prepared to leave the study, Daniel suddenly realized something.
"My phone..." he muttered, glancing back toward the desk. "I forgot it."
"I’ll get it," he said, about to turn back, but Anna quickly interrupted him.
"Wait, I’ll go and get it," she said with a warm smile, clearly wanting to help.
Without waiting for his response, she walked back toward the study.
Anna stepped inside and reached for the phone resting on Daniel’s desk. Just as she picked it up, her eyes drifted to a file lying beside it.
A familiar name caught her attention.
"Helmworth International..." she murmured softly.
Curiosity made her flip the file open for a brief glance. She skimmed through a few pages, recognizing some of the details almost immediately.
Just then, Daniel walked into the room.
"What’s taking you so long?" he asked casually.
His voice trailed off when he saw Anna holding the file.
Anna looked up at him and pointed toward the document.
"Is this the same project Katherine has been working on?" she asked, recalling Katherine mentioning it the other evening.
Daniel nodded as he walked closer.
"Yes," he replied. "I kept a copy of it for myself."
Anna nodded in understanding. However, she didn’t dwell on it any longer. She had no intention of involving herself in the company’s matters.
Closing the file, she placed it back neatly on the desk and handed Daniel his phone.
"Here," she said with a small smile.
Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket, and together they left the study, heading straight toward the dining area for dinner.
Just as they finally settled down, Daniel’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and immediately answered when he saw the caller’s name. It was Henry. Daniel listened carefully, but the words on the other end made his brows slowly draw together in a frown.
"Did he get suspicious?" Daniel asked quietly.
There was a brief pause as he listened again. His expression tightened before he gave a small nod, even though Henry could not see him.
"I understand," Daniel replied before ending the call.
He placed the phone on the table, his thoughts clearly occupied.
"Everything alright?" Anna asked softly, resting her hand over his on the table. Her eyes searched his face, noticing the tension that had appeared there.
Daniel looked at her and gave a small nod. "For now, yes," he said. "But I doubt Collin is foolish enough to keep believing that no one is watching him."
Anna frowned slightly, confusion crossing her face. She had expected trouble, but the seriousness in Daniel’s tone made her uneasy.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
Daniel leaned back slightly in his chair before explaining what Henry had just told him. Earlier that evening, their informer had been dangerously close to being discovered. According to Henry, Collin had suddenly changed his route and behavior as if he had sensed something was wrong. The informer barely managed to slip away before Collin could catch him.
Anna listened carefully, her expression gradually turning serious as Daniel continued.
"It seems like Collin noticed something unusual," Daniel said. "He didn’t confront anyone directly, but Henry believes he was testing the surroundings."
Anna slowly withdrew her hand, absorbing the information.
"So our informer was almost caught?" she asked, and Daniel nodded.
A quiet tension settled between them as the gravity of the situation sank in.
"But don’t worry. Everything is under control," Daniel assured her when he noticed that Anna had grown quiet.
Anna shook her head slightly. "No, I am not concerned about that," she replied softly. "But don’t you find it suspicious?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Daniel leaned forward a little, curiosity flickering across his face as he tried to understand what was going through her mind.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
Anna hesitated for a moment before speaking, choosing her words carefully.
"Collin is on good terms with both your aunt and my mother," she said slowly, her gaze fixed on Daniel. "And that is what feels strange to me."
Daniel’s brows drew together as he considered her words. He had been so focused on Collin’s movements and the possibility of him discovering their surveillance that he had not thought about that particular detail.
Anna continued, her voice calm but thoughtful. "Think about it. Both of them trust him, and Collin seems comfortable around them. Yet we know he is far more calculating than he appears."
Daniel leaned back slightly, the pieces beginning to fall into place as he processed what she was suggesting.
"So that is what has been fishy here," Daniel said slowly, nodding as realization settled in.
Anna simply shrugged.
"That is the only conclusion I can come to," she replied. "Otherwise, why do you think he has been so discreet? Collin is clearly benefiting from both of them in the name of trust. And I am sure there is something he is planning for himself."
Daniel could not help but agree with her. The thought had crossed his mind before, but Collin was not the kind of man who revealed his intentions easily. He was careful and patient, someone who would never lay his cards on the table until the exact moment he wanted to.
"Let us see where this leads," Daniel said calmly.
Anna frowned at his answer.
"And what about your aunt?" she asked. "Are you not going to warn her?"
Daniel clicked his tongue lightly as he reached for the dishes and began serving their dinner, his movements unhurried.
"She brought this upon herself," he said with a casual shrug. "So I am simply going to watch how she manages to get herself out of it on her own."
Anna stared at him for a moment, surprised by his response.
Daniel then glanced at her and gave a playful wink.
That single gesture made Anna’s heart skip a beat.
Understanding the unspoken meaning behind his words, she could not help but smile. A quiet understanding passed between them as they both realized that sometimes the best move was to step back and observe rather than interfere.
With that silent agreement between them, they finally began eating their dinner, the earlier tension slowly easing from the room.
