Chapter 49: We’ve controlled her once we can it again

The melody lingered in Lixue’s mind as she hummed it softly, her fingers lightly tapping the desk in rhythm. It was a song born of reflection, one she knew had the potential to resonate deeply with others. A small smile tugged at her lips. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Her thoughts returned to Zong Meiyua. She could still picture her best friend’s bright, mischievous smile and the way she always managed to lighten the mood, no matter how dark the day had been. Meiyua had been her anchor, someone who saw the good in her even when she couldn’t see it herself.

"I owe her so much," Lixue whispered to herself. She thought about all the times Meiyua had tried to reach out in her past life, only to be met with indifference. She had been so lost in her own struggles that she hadn’t realized how much she was pushing people away.

But now, things were different. Lixue had a second chance to set things right. She glanced at the clock. It was too late to message Meiyua again tonight—her best friend was still halfway across the world, after all—but tomorrow, she’d make sure to plan something special for Meiyua’s return.

Her phone buzzed, breaking her train of thought. She picked it up to find another message from Meiyua.

Meiyua: "I still can’t believe we’re finally going to see each other again! Lixue, promise me we’ll make up for lost time, okay? No excuses this time!"

Lixue’s heart warmed as she read the message. Without hesitation, she typed back:

Lixue: "No excuses, I promise. We’ll catch up on everything. I’m so excited to see you again, Meiyua."

She placed her phone down, feeling a strange mix of nostalgia and hope. This was her chance to build a better version of herself—not just for her, but for the people who had always believed in her.

The notepad on her desk caught her eye again, and she reached for it, flipping through the pages filled with her recent lyrics. She decided this song was special—it wasn’t just another composition; it was personal. Perhaps when Meiyua arrived, she’d share it with her.

Her mind swirled with ideas, not just for music, but for how she could truly show the people in her life that they mattered to her. She jotted down a quick note:

"Things to do"

Plan a special day for Meiyua’s return.

Catch up with old friends.

Write more songs that mean something."*

Feeling a sense of clarity, Lixue stood up and stretched, the tension from earlier melting away. She was no longer the person who had let opportunities slip through her fingers. This time, she was determined to hold on tightly to the people and moments that mattered.

With that thought, she closed her notepad and headed to bed, the melody she’d written still softly playing in her mind.

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow in Lixue’s room. She woke up feeling unusually refreshed, her mind still buzzing with the melody she had written the night before. Stretching lazily, she reached for her notepad on the bedside table and skimmed through the lyrics. A small smile played on her lips.

Today felt like a fresh start.

After getting ready, Lixue decided to take her breakfast in the garden. The crisp air was invigorating, and the vibrant flowers swayed gently in the morning breeze. She sipped her tea, her thoughts drifting to the list she had made last night.

Reconnecting with Meiyua was at the top of her priorities. Lixue opened her phone and scrolled through her messages. Meiyua’s text from last night made her smile again. She quickly typed:

Lixue: "Morning, Meiyua! I was thinking we could plan something special for your return. Let me know what you’d like to do! Can’t wait to catch up properly."

Satisfied, she set her phone down and focused on enjoying the peace of the moment. But it wasn’t long before her phone buzzed with a reply.

Meiyua: "Good morning! Ah, I missed this! I’ll leave the planning to you—I trust your taste. Just don’t take me somewhere boring, okay? Can’t wait!"

Lixue chuckled, shaking her head fondly. Meiyua’s playful tone hadn’t changed a bit.

Her excitement grew as she mentally began planning for her best friend’s return. Perhaps a day exploring some of the newer spots in the city—she could take Meiyua to the restaurant she had visited with Red and the others, followed by a relaxing afternoon at one of the trendy cafes, and then finish the day with a music session at home.

But before all that, there was still today. Lixue’s fingers itched to continue working on the song she had started. Inspiration had been flowing so naturally lately, as if the universe was aligning to give her everything she needed.

***************

In the grand and imposing Yu family mansion, Yu Jia entered with a quickened pace, her eyes betraying the panic she was trying to suppress. The tension in her expression was unmistakable as she walked toward the study where her mother, Qin Sayou, sat, lounging comfortably in a chair.

"Mother," Yu Jia started, trying to keep her voice steady, though her words were laced with worry, "The lyrics... we’re running out of them. We’ve only got two more this year, and after that, there’s nothing left. We need to get more from Lixue."

Qin Sayou’s face twisted into a frown, irritation flaring in her eyes. She had always been the driving force behind this arrangement, manipulating Lixue into writing lyrics for them, and she wasn’t pleased by the sudden complication.

"Don’t tell me you’re panicking now," Qin Sayou snapped, her voice sharp. "You’ve been handling things just fine until now, haven’t you? But now that she’s married to that Mo Ran, you’re worried she won’t be so easy to push around anymore?"

Yu Jia hesitated, guilt and frustration battling within her. "It’s not just that... Mo Ran’s influence on her is growing. I don’t think Lixue will be as easy to manipulate anymore. She’s changed since the wedding. We can’t just demand new lyrics like before."

Qin Sayou let out a deep sigh, but her irritation was still palpable. "We’ll figure something out," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "We’ve controlled her once, we can do it again. Maybe we’ll have to be more... persuasive."
