Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse-Chapter 676: Qiqi’s New Discovery
Chapter 676: Chapter 676: Qiqi’s New Discovery
Mao Zhihang nodded and continued to act as if nothing had happened, selling supplies but keeping an eye on the man Mao Qiqi had mentioned.
The man appeared moderately built and was decently dressed, wearing a gray hat. His complexion was slightly pale, but in the apocalypse, very few people had rosy cheeks.
In Mao Qiqi’s mini-map, the dot that represented the man as a Special Ability User flickered on and off, turning the color of ordinary people when off and the color of Special Ability Users when on. Such a phenomenon had never been seen on her map before; it was truly strange.
However, Mao Zhihang did not notice anything unusual about the man, only feeling that he seemed somewhat irritable, especially after Mao Zhihang accidentally dropped his Crystal Core on the ground, causing the man’s hands to tremble with anger.
"Sorry, my hand slipped,"
Mao Zhihang apologized proactively.
"You, hurry up,"
The man’s voice was somewhat hoarse, as if he was trying hard to restrain himself from erupting in anger. He wanted to buy liquor over 52 proof, and he provided plenty of Crystal Cores, which Mao Qiqi began to count, one by one.
The man became impatient again, "Can you hurry up?"
"It’s exactly 300, no more, no less,"
Mao Qiqi lifted her head and replied, as Mao Zhihang nodded and went to the back counter to get a bottle of liquor.
"Uncle, your nose is bleeding,"
Mao Qiqi said, offering the man a tissue.
"Uncle... Uncle?"
The man did not take the tissue, and his look towards Mao Qiqi suddenly turned sorrowful, eventually letting a tear fall slowly.
At that moment, Mao Zhihang also came out with a bottle of liquor and said, "Sir, your liquor is here,"
The man then turned around, glanced at Mao Zhihang, took the liquor, and left without looking back.
"He doesn’t even wipe his nosebleed, and still drinks despite being so fired up,"
A customer muttered afterwards, noting how the kind-hearted girl offered him a tissue, which he refused. After all, tissue was one of the most precious items in the apocalypse!
Mao Zhihang watched the man’s retreating figure thoughtfully; Qiqi was right, there was indeed something odd about him.
"He suddenly cried just now,"
Lin Tianzhen also came over and said to Mao Zhihang, with both the nosebleed and tears, it felt quite creepy.
"Yes, we have surveillance in the store. We will check it later,"
Mao Zhihang replied in a low voice.
The surveillance equipment in the store was provided by Liang Jiuhui. At some point, the two Heart Talk Stores had become hubs for all sorts of news and gossip at the base, as well as a must-visit for every survivor.
Before the installation of surveillance, however, it had been agreed upon by all members of the Heart Talk Team, partly to help the base collect various pieces of information and partly to prevent theft. As Guo Yang put it, it was flawless.
Although the incident was just a strange little occurrence, Mao Zhihang, who was always cautious, took out the surveillance footage’s card that afternoon.
"Dad, shall I deliver it?"
Mao Qiqi volunteered, as she was free that afternoon and could deliver the items to the base, although it had always been Liang Jiuhui who sent someone to pick them up before.
The couple exchanged glances, recalling Mao Qiqi’s current abilities, they did not object. Lin Tianzhen added a few more instructions before letting her take the items and go.
"Qiqi seems very concerned about this matter,"
Lin Tianzhen said while organizing the shelves.
"Hmm, that girl has become much more attentive than before, probably because she’s spent a lot of time with Xiao Hao and Xiao Jin, soaking it all in,"
Mao Zhihang said with a smile. Anyway, since Qiqi was idle, he thought it wouldn’t hurt to let the young girl tinker around as she wished.
Mao Qiqi, in great spirits, ran to the administrative building of the base, a place she had visited many times and was quite familiar with. However, the glass doors at the entrance required a swipe card to open, and she had no choice but to wait on the side and see if someone would let her in.
"Qiqi? Are you here to see someone?"
Sheng Jing, who was just about to return to her office with a stack of files, saw Mao Qiqi outside the door. It was the young girl’s first time here alone.
"Sister Sheng Jing, I’m here to deliver something,"
Qiqi cheerfully waved from outside. Although Sheng Jing couldn’t quite hear what she was saying, she looked like she had business to attend to, so Sheng Jing smiled and walked over to press the door opener.
"Thank you, Sister Sheng Jing, I have something, could you please submit it for me?"
Mao Qiqi took out a small USB drive and said.
"Qiqi, since you’re here, why don’t you come in and sit for a while? Wouldn’t it be better to explain in person?"
Sheng Jing said with a smile, thinking it was probably about something important since she came to deliver the item, and felt it would be best for Qiqi to explain it herself.
"Okay, sure,"
Mao Qiqi agreed promptly. She was very familiar with the place and knew many people here, so she wasn’t worried about anything.
Liang Jiuhui, who was processing files, didn’t expect Mao Qiqi to come here alone. This was indeed a novelty, but after hearing Mao Qiqi’s explanation, he didn’t think it was a trivial matter.
"Qiqi, you did the right thing. Although our base is secure, we can’t let our guard down. We will keep an eye on this person, and if you discover anything on your end, can you contact us immediately?"
Liang Jiuhui said with a relieved expression. Qiqi’s Special Ability was very convenient for identifying people who were physically unusual, and he was somewhat glad that Lu Hao and Su Jin hadn’t taken her with them this time.
"Sure, and if you find out why that person is so strange, you must tell me too,"
Mao Qiqi said, genuinely curious about that person.
"Don’t worry, we will definitely inform Qiqi immediately,"
Liang Jiuhui couldn’t help but smile, reflecting on how determined the child was to investigate everything to the end.
Qiqi then confidently returned to the Heart Talk Branch, only to find that Lian Jiyue was already waiting for her in the store.
"Where did Qiqi go?"
Lian Jiyue asked.
Mao Qiqi told him about the strange person she encountered today. To her surprise, Lian Jiyue’s interest was piqued, and he asked, "What did that person look like?"
"I’ve sent out the surveillance footage. I only remember that the person was wearing a gray hat,"
Mao Qiqi recalled.
A gray hat?
Lian Jiyue immediately remembered the person he had bumped into when he left Lian Zongren’s place today. That person was also wearing a gray hat and had entered the room next door...
...
The battle clothes developed in the Weapon Research Institute of the S City base had passed multiple tests conducted by professionals and achieved satisfactory results. It was said that as long as a Special Ability User wore those clothes, zombies below Level Five couldn’t scratch or bite through them.
Whether they could withstand Level Five and above Mutated Zombies was still undetermined due to insufficient experimental data, but as long as someone wore them, ordinary zombies couldn’t harm them at all.
The introduction of these battle clothes immediately caused a sensation throughout the entire S City base, including Han Yizhou and others who were also shocked.
