Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 768 - 643: Counting Money Until My Hands Cramp
Everything was over, and it was almost three in the morning. In an hour, the sky would start to brighten, leaving enough time for the other party to handle their business.
Both parties were very satisfied with the deal. Besides having ample time, the middle-aged man appreciated Zhang Guoqing’s generous and straightforward manner.
As for Zhang Guoqing, he was pleased to see the other party keeping his promises, even gifting him with two sacks of cotton. Especially the three pigs being calculated at twice the price of the purchase station.
The things weren’t worth much, but they revealed the other person’s character. If not for too many concerns, Zhang Guoqing wished he could establish a brotherly bond with him.
The couple drove their vehicles out of the neighboring city; as they approached the junction, Zhang Guoqing didn’t wait for Zhou Jiao’s prompt and took the lead to turn into a dirt road, driving a few hundred meters before stopping. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Zhang Guoqing was very satisfied with the advantage compared to the future. There were fewer vehicles, and he noticed nothing trailing behind their two cars, which made him feel at ease.
Zhou Jiao looked behind and got out of the truck.
"Exhausted?"
Zhou Jiao stretched out her hands, smiled, and said, "Quite interesting, very thrilling."
Zhang Guoqing burst into laughter at her words, giving her a thumbs up. He had worried for so long, but he didn’t expect this girl to be so courageous!
"Listen for any sounds. I need to put away the truck, and I’ll swap vehicles at the next intersection."
Zhang Guoqing understood this was to prevent the other party from investigating. Without taking much time to chat, he stayed at the back of the truck for a while, carefully noting the surroundings.
After about ten minutes, he signaled with a nod to Zhou Jiao that they could proceed. Just as he nodded, the large truck was immediately stored in her space. If he remembered correctly, his wife mentioned the space was only as big as a classroom. Could it be a tiered one?
Zhou Jiao packed away the truck and dragged him towards the car. She opened the driver’s seat and pushed him in, then went around to the right side door and swiftly got into the co-pilot seat.
"That’s quite queenly!"
"Let’s return to the palace!"
Zhang Guoqing chuckled foolishly, quickly started the vehicle, and drove off.
"Today, I finally know what counting money until your hands cramp feels like."
"Oh?"
Zhou Jiao stuck out her tongue, "I want to throw up!"
Zhang Guoqing was focused on driving; he didn’t want to let happiness turn into trouble. Curious, he asked, "You really counted? I saw there were not just ten yuan notes, but quite a few five and three yuan notes inside. Comparing is enough."
"But your wife was being silly. Later, seeing that man being so generous with the pig price, I realized I was thinking like a petty person."
"It’s not your fault. Being cautious is never a big mistake. The guy hopes for another collaboration in the future. He bought from us at double the market price without needing tickets. As a seller, he wouldn’t want to give up, otherwise, he wouldn’t calculate everything for us at this ratio."
Zhou Jiao sighed, "It’s a pity that this is as far as it goes. I see the other person is not simple, the outside yard is rundown, but inside even has a scale; definitely doing big business. Near the sea, if my guess is right, it’s tied to smuggling groups, probably connected to foreign forces."
Zhang Guoqing admired her with a glance. He was still listening to their discussions and analyses, but she managed to analyze all this just from sitting at the driver’s seat the entire evening.
Zhou Jiao clapped her right hand on her leg, "Let’s not talk about them. Let’s discuss something happy. Honey, should we play a distribution game?"
Zhang Guoqing smiled and said, "Is it those flour sacks that make you love and hate?"
Zhou Jiao laughed heartily. Exactly! She couldn’t bear to sell them, they take up space when stored, but she wouldn’t admit it.
She snapped her fingers, "A few days ago, so many cans and spirits were shipped out; the black market nearby is probably circulating well and not noticeable. How about we send out cans and wine next? Of course, add a bag of white flour."
Zhang Guoqing smiled silently. With her nature, she was just saying this; come the moment, she’d be worried about being too high-profile and would shrink back into her shell.
Sure enough...
"It’s better to secretly enjoy in our hearts. If I make a grand spectacle known to everyone, that good life would be over, asking for trouble."
See...
This is his wife!
However, it was evident she was in a very good mood. To actually play around talking to herself, it was rare.
Zhou Jiao smiled at him, a little embarrassed.
Causing Zhang Guoqing to burst into loud laughter.
Because he only now realized the woman with the unfamiliar face was his wife! Just listening to the familiar voice and smelling the familiar scent, he had completely forgotten.
Zhou Jiao rolled her eyes at him, "Stupid... Uncle, you’re no better."
The couple knew returning before dawn was not possible, so they didn’t rush on their way, indulging in sweet banter in the car.
At the next junction, taking advantage of the dark, the couple swapped outfits and cars again, finally restoring their original appearance, leading to another round of laughter.
It was already daylight before reaching the county town, so they decided to put two bags of white flour and a bag of cotton in the rear seat as a gift for Zhao Dashan.
Halfway, Zhou Jiao got out of the car first and returned to their small courtyard, while Zhang Guoqing drove directly to Zhao Dashan’s doorstep, just in time to unload the gifts before heading to work at his unit.
In the courtyard, Zhou Jiao loaded two bags of flour and ten pounds of cotton onto a handcart. She planned to take advantage of the fact that they weren’t at work yet to give them to the two nuns.
As for the goods with foreign labels, she really didn’t dare to freely take them out. The flour and cotton could still be explained as bought from the black market. Foreign goods would definitely lead to suspicion about her godfather, best not to cause trouble!
After loading, Zhou Jiao added wheat straw and firewood on top to cover it so the contents were hidden before stopping. Of course, the black coal residue on the straw, she didn’t care; no one would think it had returned from abroad.
On the other side, as soon as Cheng Hongli opened the door, Zhang Guoqing, without a word, dragged the bag out of the car door and tucked it under his arm, carrying two bags of fifty-pound flour in his hands, sprinting into her yard.
The speed made Cheng Hongli gape, unable to finish a sentence, "...this..."
Zhang Guoqing set the things in her living room, ran to the courtyard and tossed the car keys to Cheng Hongli, "Before my uncle comes out, I need to run. When Hongbing comes back, let them go directly to the village."
As Zhao Dashan walked out of the room, he saw Zhang Guoqing darting out of the yard. He teased, "This kid must’ve done something wrong to run so fast."
"I barely said a word, yet he ran like the wind. I also wanted to ask why such a big package was being moved to the house?" Cheng Hongli pointed at the items on the ground.
Zhao Dashan shook his head, chuckling, "That kid is so sly, he’s afraid I’ll make him move it back."
Cheng Hongli handed him the keys with a smile, "Should I return them?"
"You wish! Initially, I wanted wine. Keep the items quiet; going to the black market isn’t well perceived."
Cheng Hongli rolled her eyes at him. She already knew that. She squatted down and patted the two sacks, startled, eyes widening. Quickly she slapped the side of the sack, her heart tightened.
—Opening it revealed it was indeed cotton.
"This, this... is way too much! No wonder the kid dropped and ran."
Zhao Dashan touched his head, laughing, "No wonder... take it! He’s honoring his uncle with this!"
—He said it, if it weren’t for good things, that kid wouldn’t have been so eager, running all night.
