Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 479 - 366: Nightfall
Before coming down the mountain, Zhang Guoqing and Zhou Jiao discussed it and decided to contribute two wild boars.
It’s not out of the kindness of their hearts, but only with a wild boar in the village could they cover up the smell of meat at home.
Zhang Guoqing was now tired of slaughtering wild boars. He was exhausted the whole afternoon, and two-thirds of the wild boars hadn’t been processed yet, not to mention the wildlife caught earlier.
Whenever he thought of the game that needed slaughtering for several days, he wished he could drag them all to the slaughterhouse.
Zhang Guoqing directly threw the two wild boars at the foot of the mountain and asked the distant children to call for Old Captain Uncle.
Upon learning there would be meat for dinner, the group of children went wild with joy, guarding the two wild boars without leaving.
In the end, it was Old Captain who received the message from an honest boy and came over with a few people to meet them.
Facing everyone’s gratitude, Zhang Guoqing smiled and shook his head.
Returning home, after unloading one wild boar and pouring out half a basket of fish, Zhang Guoqing declined Old Captain’s invitation — letting Old Captain handle it directly.
A wild boar weighing four to five hundred pounds made the villagers too delighted to care about work; they soon all gathered at the village’s drying ground.
Seeing more and more villagers and noticing the time was about to end, Old Captain simply announced the end of work for the whole village. This decision made everyone applaud happily.
At the moment, Zhang Guoqing had no time to care about the bustling drying ground. Seeing his two brothers and sisters-in-law all coming over, he quickly let Zhou Jiao take the child inside to rest, while he pulled them to help.
Zhou Jiao smiled, and seeing him turn around, she quickly followed Mother Zhang and the others into the kitchen with the child in her arms.
"Jiao Jiao, how do you plan to cook these things?" Mother Zhang frowned at the fish and shrimp in the basket. Her youngest son was really foolish. Why not keep the pork, what’s the use of these?
"Mom, just cook a bit, don’t make too much. Later the village will have pork dishes, we can eat there," Zhou Jiao laughed. She loved the village’s pork dishes, especially the atmosphere.
As soon as she finished speaking, everyone burst into laughter.
Facing Zhou Jiao’s puzzled expression, Huang Cuilan laughed and said, "With the busy farming season, Captain Uncle wouldn’t organize it. He’s afraid that everyone will stay up too late and affect tomorrow’s work."
Feeling embarrassed, Zhou Jiao laughed, "Then let’s prepare dinner first and cook more dishes. Everyone will eat here tonight."
"No need to prepare dinner. Your eldest sister-in-law even cooked for you and Xiao Wu. Keep the fish for yourself to take back," Mother Zhang said, stopping Zhou Jiao.
Lin Juhua, hearing this from the side, picked up a big fish and laughed, "Let me salt them for Jiao Jiao, she can have it in town."
"No need. You all take them back, leave just two for me."
Mother Zhang glared at Zhou Jiao, these two spendthrifts! She said helplessly, "Leave two for dinner, salt the rest, the eldest’s first boil water hot."
Following Mother Zhang’s command, Huang Cuilan and Lin Juhua quickly began to work. Seeing this, Zhou Jiao hurriedly took the child to the living room and left Xi Zi and the others to watch over him while she ran to help.
In the kitchen, the four women quickly finished their tasks, carrying buckets of hot water for Zhang Guoqing to slaughter the pig.
Before long, Zhang Guoqing disassembled the pig, leaving two baskets full of meat except for the head, ribs, fat, and pig innards.
After a bout of busy work, Zhang Guoqing took out two small baskets, placing twenty pounds of pork in each, along with some bones. He then packed four fish on top, for the two sisters-in-law to take home later.
Seeing Zhang Guoqing being so stingy, Zhou Jiao glanced at everyone.
Hearing Mother Zhang saying it was too much, she covered her mouth and giggled. Ten pounds per family, for the four siblings’ families, that’s forty pounds. She was curious to see how Zhang Guoqing would allocate the remaining meat.
Greed knows no bounds, and the two sisters-in-law might have thoughts. This was Zhang Guoqing’s first time bringing back game after the family’s separation, and the distribution is truly intriguing to Zhou Jiao.
Mother Zhang looked up at the sky and said, "Tonight, our family will have pork dishes here. Eldest daughter-in-law, you and the second’s hurry up."
Finishing her sentence, she picked up the basket, had Zhang Guoqing put in the pig head, bones, and innards, and carried it to the kitchen. She started a pot for stewing the pig head and reserved another for Zhou Jiao to stew the fat, planning to cook pork dishes when the two daughters-in-law came over. She then took the child and hurriedly went out.
In the kitchen, when Zhou Jiao heard Mother Zhang asking for two knifes’ worth of meat to send to Uncle Zhang and Uncle Zhang, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud — this mother and son were really stingy.
Outside, the voices of Mother Zhang’s orders, Mr. Zhang and his four sons’ happy chatter, and the children’s cheers made her hurry up.
After a while, Zhang Guoqing came in, and Zhou Jiao raised her eyebrows at him.
Seeing this, Zhang Guoqing raised his eyebrows back at her.
The couple communicated silently, understanding each other’s meaning.
It wasn’t the time for talking, so the couple just smiled at each other.
Outside came the voices of Huang Cuilan and Lin Juhua, Zhang Guoqing glanced at her and turned to go out.
"Sisters-in-law, have you finished cleaning up? It’s up to you how to cook the pork dishes next," Zhou Jiao pointed to the pot of nearly finished stewed fat.
"Your second sister-in-law said you wanted pork dishes, probably because you wanted some fun. She set up a pot in the yard, and the kids’ dad and the others are burying the pot there. Once the oil is done, just leave it," Huang Cuilan said with a smile at Lin Juhua.
Happily, Zhou Jiao turned around to stand at the door, and sure enough, Mr. Zhang and the others were already preparing in the yard.
After a meal of pork dishes, sending off Mr. Zhang, Mother Zhang, and the group, Zhang Guoqing locked the main gate and carried the child, embracing his wife back into the kitchen.
In the kitchen, Zhou Jiao set out the stroller, let their son sit down, and went first to wash her hands.
"Have you made up your mind?"
Zhang Guoqing understood his wife’s meaning, and without speaking, he nodded. He had done everything; if the two brothers and sisters-in-law were still dissatisfied, so be it.
"What about Big Sister and Second Sister?"
Zhang Guoqing chuckled and cast a sidelong glance at her, "Two pieces each."
Zhou Jiao looked at him deeply, smiled, and shook her head.
"That’s not right. Do you support or oppose?"
"Whatever you do, I’ll support you! Just do whatever you want. Safety first."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Guoqing sighed, stepping forward to hug Zhou Jiao tightly — only this woman in the world understands him, knows him, supports him. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Go... Go..." Ping’an’s voice shattered the warm scene of the couple’s embrace, making them both laugh.
Zhang Guoqing stepped forward to pick him up and walked to the door, "Where to go? Look, it’s dark, everyone is asleep. Daddy’s Little Ping’an should sleep too, okay?"
"Okay... Okay...."
Zhou Jiao was amused. The little chubby always catches the last words, what does he know? She stepped forward to take the child, holding him while feeding him, and after eating his fill, she gently patted him.
After a while, Zhou Jiao looked at the child’s sleeping face, couldn’t resist kissing him, put away the stroller, switched to the cradle, and gently laid him down.
The topic interrupted by their son, the couple tacitly didn’t bring it up again.
Zhang Guoqing began to talk about what Old Captain wanted him for in the morning, plans to return to the town tomorrow, coordinating with Zhou Jiao, and continuing their work in low voices.
