Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 468 - 356: Fury Shooting to the Head
The night before leaving, Zhou Xiaozheng privately took Zhou Jiao to the Shikumen, once again asking the elderly couple to go with him. After being refused, he could only return disappointed.
Upon departure, they split into two groups. After sending off Zhao Chuan Guang and his wife, who were headed directly to the Northeast, the rest of the group embarked on their journey back.
Once home, they learned that Mr. Lin had already returned from his business trip. What she had to face still needed to be resolved, so that night, Zhou Jiao brought gifts to the Lin Family’s door.
"You’re back? Why is it just the two of you? Didn’t you bring the child over?" Mr. Lin happily pulled the two in to sit down, asking several questions in a row. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Zhou Jiao noticed that Mrs. Lin and the others weren’t there and paused. Seeing Zhang Guoqing had already started chatting with Mr. Lin, she didn’t ask out loud.
"Your grandmother had a small ailment again a few days ago and is still in the sanatorium. How was your time in Jiangnan this visit?"
Zhang Guoqing didn’t mention visiting the sick and diverted the topic: "It was alright. Grandpa, how was your trip to G Province? Is the weather really hot there now? I heard they have a lot of fruit varieties."
Mr. Lin shook his head at these words.
Zhang Guoqing pretended not to see him shake his head, smiling as he picked up his teacup.
"I brought some fruit back this time, you can take some to try later. How long will you be staying this time? Has Jiao Jiao met your cousin yet?"
Zhou Jiao smiled and said, "I was taken away by my dad as soon as I arrived, just got back today. I haven’t seen them yet, how come they’re not back now?"
"I got a call from the courtyard saying there’s a new movie screening tonight, and they went over early. They’ll be back later, or you could go find them there."
Zhou Jiao inwardly mused: She must be really bored to go looking for people herself. But it’s a good excuse to leave. She glanced several times at Zhang Guoqing.
"Grandpa, I’ll take Jiao Jiao over there then." Seeing this, Zhang Guoqing stood up to say goodbye.
Watching Zhang Guoqing and his wife leave, Mr. Lin hesitated for a moment, then went to the intersection, discovering the Cheng Family’s lights off while the Zhou Family’s were brightly lit; he shook his head.
Back in the living room, he instructed the auntie to carry a basket of fruit and follow him to his son-in-law’s house.
On their side, Zhang Guoqing and Zhou Jiao didn’t know Mr. Lin doubled back. Luckily, despite not wanting to deal with the Lin Family’s three sisters, they hadn’t gone home yet; otherwise, they really would have been caught.
At the entrance of the Big Courtyard, the couple strolled leisurely along the street. Wherever there were gatherings, they would stand by and listen to the old grandpas gossip.
The small tidbits these old folks shared weren’t particularly attractive, but their banter was truly hilarious. They could chatter endlessly! A whole bunch of chatterers!
After enjoying the laughter, they joined in with the crowd, laughing heartily.
The couple continued wandering through the alleys. With big trees and illuminated by lights, there were often elderly and children gathered together talking about everyday matters, discussing where to find bargains, never straying far from life’s necessities.
After hearing the tales both inside and outside the home, they drank from the large bowl of tea passionately offered by an auntie, thanking everyone.
The two navigated through alleyways to the main street, purchasing some toys for the children, and happily headed back.
Upon returning, standing outside the courtyard, Zhang Guoqing heard conversation inside and gestured to Zhou Jiao with a smile.
Zhou Jiao smiled helplessly. Entering, she greeted Mr. Lin and the others, leaving Zhang Guoqing there. She took the child from Aunt Chen and slipped back to the room.
After feeding the child and tidying up, Zhou Jiao played with toys along with the child. Hearing the child’s joyful laughter at this moment, she forgot about the Lin Family’s matters.
Lin Lishan came in to see her daughter and grandson lying on the bed building blocks—fortified by the colorful wooden blocks Zhang Guoqing stacked up and towering under Zhou Jiao’s hands; at that moment, Zhou Jiao guided the child’s hands to try placing a wooden duck on top.
She smiled happily, waiting quietly for it to collapse...
With Ping’an anxiously grabbing the blocks and wailing, the unrighteous mother and daughter’s reaction was immediate laughter.
Lin Lishan quickly stacked the blocks together, comforting the little one, "Alright, it’ll be okay soon. This time we won’t let it fall, okay?"
Ping’an mumbled an okay, reaching out his small hands to grab, only to have Zhou Jiao tap them, immediately opening his eyes to look at Zhou Jiao. Seeing her smiling, he quickly crawled into her embrace.
"You little genius," Zhou Jiao playfully scolded, ruffling his head.
She looked at Lin Lishan and asked puzzled, "Mom, why didn’t you come with Grandpa?"
"I’m not interested in their conversation topics. I have work again tomorrow, and I won’t have time to take you shopping. Do you want to go anywhere? I’ll see if I can sneak away."
Hearing this, Zhou Jiao laughed, "Mom, do you really just want to shop? Are you making an excuse?"
