Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 444 - 336: The Experience of a Rush Purchase
Early in the morning, Zhang Guoqing was holding Zhou Jiao’s hand, and the couple wrapped in layers like balls slowly made their way to the supply point.
"February spring breeze is like scissors"—this is scarier than scissors. The wind blowing on the exposed skin feels painful, and when you can’t feel the pain anymore, that’s really dangerous.
Zhang Guoqing helplessly protected his wife, his eyes constantly watching her. He feared she might slip accidentally. Normally, he wouldn’t want her going out before nine. Who would’ve thought she insisted they face difficulties together as a couple? With the temperature varying greatly between day and night, he genuinely wasn’t keen on her going out.
"Jiao Jiao, watch the road, don’t walk under the eaves, it’s dangerous!"
"Don’t uncover your scarf. And don’t secretly take off your gloves either."
"Jiao Jiao, let’s go home, we won’t buy anymore. Don’t worry about eldest sister, it’s such a hassle! We’ll come back when the sun is out. I want to go home."
She laughed heartily at his words, her laughter muffled by her mask and scarf, making it sound even more peculiar, and making the surrounding temperature feel even colder.
"Don’t try to take off your scarf to talk, just nod or shake your head. Okay... you’re something else! Stop nodding, your hat is about to fall off, are you sure it’s not deliberate?"
Along the way, with Zhang Guoqing’s constant muttering, they reached the grain station. Not far away, they saw the long queue, with benches and baskets in between to hold their places.
Zhou Jiao pulled Zhang Guoqing towards the middle, her eyes darting around nervously. A few steps forward and she spotted the Zhao siblings waving their hands like tumbler dolls, happily dragging Zhang Guoqing to run over there.
Zhang Guoqing glared at Zhao Yuanyuan—this troublemaker is up to no good. He said grumpily, "Take off the scarf and speak. No one knows what you’re doing with all that gesturing."
"Xiao Wu, I’m so miserable. I just lay down and she woke me up with a cold towel. Do you think I did something wrong to deserve this sister?" Zhao Hongbing complained as he took off his mask.
The people queueing laughed at his words.
Zhou Jiao hurriedly untied her scarf and mask, saying, "Brother Xiao Bing, go back and get some sleep. I’m really sorry for making you queue for me. Don’t blame Yuanyuan, it’s all my fault."
Zhang Guoqing didn’t wait for her to continue speaking, quickly grabbed the scarf and wrapped her up again, "Be quiet and don’t talk. Your Brother Xiao Bing is craving meat—he needs to run next door to buy it. Is it okay for you to stay here alone?"
Zhao Yuanyuan complained, "Stupid Xiao Wu, don’t you see I’m here? How’s Jiao Jiao alone? Go buy meat and stop interrupting our girl talk."
Zhao Hongbing, seeing everyone around enjoying the spectacle, hastily pulled Zhang Guoqing to run.
"Hey, slow down. Jiao Jiao, I’ll be back soon..."
Familiar people in the crowd shouted after Zhang Guoqing, "Go on, if you don’t get meat, see what your little wife does to you."
Everyone laughed heartily. A few aunties, seeing Zhang Guoqing leave, started teasing Zhou Jiao.
Zhou Jiao didn’t dare take off her scarf now, faced with everyone’s good-natured jokes, she could only smile and hide behind Zhao Yuanyuan.
On Zhang Guoqing and Zhao Hongbing’s way to the grocery store, several large baskets of frozen shiny napa cabbages and daikons were already displayed at the entrance. He peeked into the meat shop, where two staff members were tidying up inside.
Just about to go back and queue, a person in front pulled him, startling Zhang Guoqing, who was about to see who it was, when he heard his second sister’s father-in-law, Uncle Chen, smiling and saying, "Why are you only here now? Where’s your dad?"
Zhang Guoqing smiled at the crowd, seeing no objections. He didn’t move, knowing that queue-cutting happened often. He stood there, handing Zhao Hongbing’s ticket to him, letting him go to the grain point first.
"I’m sure my dad will be here within an hour. What about my brother-in-law? Didn’t see him in front of the grain store." Zhang Guoqing asked curiously. His brother-in-law is very filial, how could he not accompany his father.
"I told him to wait until noon when it’s warmer to go to the grain store, no rush. There’s tofu available today, if you buy late, it’ll be gone. Your nephew loves eating it." Uncle Chen said, smiling as he mentioned his grandson.
Zhang Guoqing grumbled under his breath, "You should’ve said sooner. We’re heading to the village tomorrow, can make plenty then. Is it worth freezing for a piece of tofu so early?"
Uncle Chen feared Zhang Guoqing would bring him a bunch of things again, pulled him close and whispered, explaining he came for newly arrived eggs, exchanging more tickets just for them.
Zhang Guoqing nodded understandingly. Winter chickens don’t lay eggs, they’re worth buying.
When it was his turn, without hesitation, he followed the old man, shadowing him to buy what he did. After buying, he said goodbye to the others.
