Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 329 - 255: Villagers Visiting as Guests (Part 2)
Huang Cuilan smiled and waved her hand repeatedly, "Don’t say that. We didn’t do much today, just watched. You’ve been busy all day, is your eldest sister’s place all tidied up?"
"All tidied up. The leftover dishes at my eldest sister’s were washed and brought back by the head chef himself. I just saw them off at my second sister’s yard. That master is quite good, even tidying up the second sister’s yard spotlessly clean. Aunt, I don’t see any problems. Just directly locked the yard door. You all relax and enjoy yourselves here."
Mother Zhang saw him finish his water and urged him to go inside and relieve Zhou Jiao.
In the guest room, Mr. Zhang and several elderly folks were sitting on the kang, with two family members sitting on chairs in front of it. An elderly villager touched the quilt on the kang and teased, "Are you used to sleeping under this new cotton quilt? I think you might need a stone slab at night to sleep soundly."
Mr. Zhang put the smoking pipe on the kang table, "I haven’t really slept here. The kids said to keep it for us two old folks, but I still prefer going back to the village. Just not used to it."
Accountant Zhang laughed heartily, "You silly old man, you don’t even know how to enjoy your blessings. Your Xiao Wu couple is so filial, letting you smoke and mess around in such a nice house. You really don’t know how to enjoy life. You’re not staying here? I think your youngest son is determined to have you live here. We’ve lived to such an age and know people when we see them. Your youngest daughter-in-law is genuinely sincere in having you two live here."
An elderly man sighed repeatedly after hearing this, "Old Second is really lucky. Had a capable father before starting a family. Has three good sons after starting a family. And three daughters-in-law in old age. Lacks nothing."
Outside, the joyous cheers of several elderly women and children could be heard.
Accountant Zhang pointed outside, "Listen, that’s what you call blessings. This daughter-in-law of yours is truly that, absolutely. Conducts herself generously. Listen to the laughter, it’s genuine. As soon as we came in, she was bustling around, serving tea and pouring water, letting children roam freely. Such a good nature. Family, if the kids ask you to stay here and take a break, come here. Since the kids are not distracted with you, keep an eye on them. They’re all good children."
Mr. Zhang listened to their words of praise, feeling delighted in his heart. Of course, he knew their young couple was filial, but he couldn’t say it, nor did he need to boast.
Not that he was bragging, if he asked Jiao Jiao for five hundred to a thousand, Jiao Jiao would give it without a second thought. If he said he wanted to eat something special, he’d get something different every day for a month. And that child would still worry about him, wanting to take him to the hospital. Not even his daughters might do that, but she would. That’s his confidence.
Jiao Jiao is different from the two daughters-in-law above. She grew up without parents around and genuinely treats them as her own mom and dad.
This child is also particularly intelligent, she kept winking at him earlier, signaling him to casually lead people into the study. She also ran over specially to open the door wide, immediately brought out candies and treats, asking one by one, "Dad, is there anything else you want? I’ll go get it."
No wonder Brother Zhou treats her as his precious. His Xiao Wu is filial, but with Jiao Jiao, even more so. A good daughter-in-law benefits three generations, Xiao Wu’s lineage will prosper for at least three generations.
In less than half an hour, Zhang Guoqing chatted with a few brothers outside and then came inside.
As soon as he came in, he smiled and respectfully greeted the elders one by one, enthusiastically chatting with them.
Though these elderly folks might not recognize a few characters, Zhang Guoqing knew many of their words carried life-taught wisdom, more practical than what’s written in books.
So, regardless of how talkative an elderly person might be, he listened attentively. Putting himself in their shoes, when he grew old, with his grandchild in front of him being mannerly, he would also offer them insights from his own life experiences.
The elderly folk in the room, along with a few middle-aged men, praised Zhang Guoqing.
Zhang Guoqing also praised their children in return. As he spoke, he described the honest ones as steady, having things under control, just lazy to bother.
For those lazier ones, he said they were smart, preferred using their brains, like intellectuals you couldn’t ask to use Martial Arts; it’s all about not finding the way yet, once they figure it out, they won’t be worse than the strong.
For the domineering and mischievous ones, he said they were straightforward, didn’t have hidden agendas, wouldn’t stab people in the back, would speak out face-to-face, genuinely spirited like a true man.
Anyway, as he went on, it really made sense, making the old men laugh heartily, agreeing that Zhang Guoqing’s words were truly reasonable. After all, who would think their sons and grandsons were bad?
Hearing from outside, the tables seemed to be set up, Zhang Guoqing stood up, "Alright, since you elders came today, you have to have a drink with my dad. We just happen to have seafood at home today, let’s all taste. Dad, come with the elders slowly, I’ll go grab the wine first. Don’t worry about getting drunk, stay here tonight, there’s plenty of places to sleep."
Old Chen and Accountant Zhang exchanged a smile, noting how this child was getting better at talking.
As Zhang Guoqing came out, he saw the living room already had two tables set. A group of children were bustling below, but upon seeing him, they suddenly paused, instantly falling silent.
"Wow, brothers, you’re really amazing. Got everything set up so quickly. Hold on, let me find some good wine for you to taste." Zhou Guoqing joked as if he hadn’t noticed anything unusual, cheerfully speaking.
A few men from the village older than him laughed heartily, secretly heaving a sigh of relief, some playfully punched Zhang Guoqiang’s arm and laughed, saying, "No wonder the entire county says Zhang Guoqing is famed for his righteousness. You kid did it on purpose just now, didn’t you?"
"Just watched you all get unnecessarily tense; our family Xiao Wu is easygoing. If you don’t believe me, ask my eldest brother." Zhang Guoqiang smiled back in response.
Mother Zhang, along with two daughters-in-law, served the dishes. When Zhang Guoqing came out carrying a wine jar, he invited everyone to the table.
This meal went on until almost three, with the kids following Xi Zi strolling to Zhang Ziwen’s house, tiredly returning to eat again. Eventually, the plates were as clean as if they were washed.
Mr. Zhang drove the ox cart, with the elderly and young children sitting above, while other men walked slowly behind the ox cart. After they left, Mother Zhang and others cleaned up the small courtyard and locked the door.
Zhang Guoqing found two carts already waiting at the door, one carrying Mother Zhang with two daughters-in-law, while the other carried their family of three grandly back to the village.
