Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space-Chapter 663 Newlyweds
Dear friends! I’ll try my best to keep the updates coming, thank you all for your support!
The two exchanged a smile. Their eyes were filled with happiness; now they were husband and wife.
"It’s almost twelve now, shall we go and have lunch?"
Ding Xiaojuan nodded, and the two walked into the restaurant with their belongings. Being meticulous people, and since they were tight on money, each of them just had a bowl of vegetable soup; Ding Xiaojuan had one bread made of mixed flour, while Chen Hui ate three.
After eating their fill, they quickly left because the waiter had already shot them several sidelong looks.
The bus was scheduled for one-thirty, so their time was really limited.
"Xiaojuan, wait at the bus stop, I’ll go buy some grains."
"Alright, spend all the money we have on grains. I still have three yuan, and we don’t usually have any expenses."
"Okay, I got it. I’ll just buy sorghum rice and cornmeal."
Ding Xiaojuan nodded. They really didn’t need much else, toilet paper was already bought, which is a necessity every month and the only item that requires cash; the rest could be saved until the grain distribution.
Chen Hui put down all the items and ran to the grain station with a few flour sacks.
The quantity of food tickets was sufficient, but the money wasn’t enough, which was an unavoidable situation. To buy grains, both money and tickets were necessary.
Chen Hui spoke many kind words and managed to buy thirty jin of sorghum rice, twenty jin of sweet potato flour, and thirty jin of cornmeal. Seeing the snowy white noodles and the money in his hands, he gritted his teeth and bought two jin. This was reserved for his wife, who wasn’t receiving anything else from marrying him, letting her have a good meal made him feel less guilty.
They arrived at the bus stop at twenty past one, rushing all the way.
Both smiled; this was indeed quite the shopping spree. Though exhausted, they were happy inside.
The bus arrived; after quite some effort, they finally got onboard. Luckily, there were few people at this time, and the bus hadn’t left the county yet, so there weren’t many passengers; otherwise, it could have been troublesome.
They placed the items directly at the back, checking over them to ensure nothing was missing, and then breathed a sigh of relief. Ding Xiaojuan handed the kettle to Chen Hui. He was truly thirsty, afraid of missing the bus, so he ran all the way.
"Xiaojuan, are we missing anything else?"
Ding Xiaojuan shook her head. "Nothing, just low on oil, but we can save a bit. It’s unavoidable; being able to buy two jin is already great. One person gets only two liang a month; this one jin and six oil ticket was a subsidy from the Educated Youth Office."
"Yeah, let’s save it." The reality was evident, and it couldn’t be helped. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
After swaying for an hour, they finally reached the bus stop at the township government entrance, where Ding Xiaojuan waited while Chen Hui went to retrieve their cart.
Fortunately, they brought enough ropes, and the cart was loaded fully.
The thermos was carried by Ding Xiaojuan.
The weather was good today, and the road was much easier to walk on compared to the morning.
The two were cheerful, so Chen Hui was quite energetic.
"Let’s take all these directly to our place, lest anyone envies them."
"Alright, I know; with a lock, we won’t worry about anything."
"Let’s invite them to dinner tomorrow night."
"Sure, I’ll buy fifty cents’ worth of eggs from the village head’s house; at least it’s something substantial."
While they discussed their small family matters along the way, neither of them felt tired.
"Chen Hui, let me pull from the front, then you can save some energy."
"No need, I can manage."
In the end, Ding Xiaojuan pulled from the front; she tied one end of the rope to the cart, and the other end over her shoulder, walking along, which indeed made it easier for Chen Hui.
They reached the village at four-thirty, at which point everyone was at work, except the under-five children and elders without labor ability left in the village.
Seeing them with a cart full of items, the kids in the village gathered around them.
They both felt a bit awkward, as they didn’t buy any candy; though they had candy tickets, they had no money, so they could only let it be.
They headed straight home. At home, they only had one large water tank, so they had to hang the grains on the ceiling; otherwise, placed on the ground, they feared attracting mice.
After tidying up everything, it was already half-past five.
Ding Xiaojuan rolled up the mat on the heated platform and wiped it clean, as they had old tables and chairs at home, saving them a lot of trouble.
They locked the door and pushed their cart back to the Educated Youth Point to fetch their stuff.
Their largest luggage was the quilts and cotton clothes for winter. They had to make four trips before moving everything.
"Chen Hui, have you tried this big stove?"
"Yes, it works fine, I just need to set the iron pot on it. Tonight I’ll go to the carpenter’s house to buy a lid and a water bucket."
"Yeah, you’re running low on money, right? I have two yuan left."
"After buying grains there are two yuan left; I’ll ask around in the evening. We still need a steamer, so should I borrow some money from them? Let’s get everything in one go; besides, next month’s subsidy should be disbursed. We can pay them back then."
"Alright, let’s just borrow a bit." Ding Xiaojuan was the eldest in her family and had a strong sense of pride; she really didn’t want to ask others for money, but the reality was what it was, she had no choice but to ask for a loan.
"It’s okay, I’ll go borrow; they told me yesterday to look for them if I needed money."
"Okay, set the big pot first, and I’ll go back to cook; we’ll eat at their place tonight, and when everyone’s gathered, we’ll distribute the grains."
"Alright, setting the big pot is quick, but you’ll have to handle the cooking; I’ll have to turn over the earthen bricks soon. They should be set now."
"Starting tomorrow, I’ll help you with the work. Let’s strive to fence the yard by winter; it’ll be safer that way. I just love big yards."
They went their separate ways, having no time to rest.
Ding Xiaojuan returned to the Educated Youth Point and started a fire to cook.
For dinner, let’s just make some mixed flour pancakes; adding some soda will make them pretty tasty.
She still had two eggs left; tonight they would have scrambled salted vegetables.
Chen Hui set the big pot and then went to turn over the earthen bricks, running into Old Yang.
The two nodded, but Old Yang had developed a good impression of Chen Hui. At least he was an ambitious person.
Old Yang returned home, where Zhao Xiaoli was already cooking. Zhao Xiaoqiang was helping with the fire; though initially planning to work, his sister kept him home, planning to go together tomorrow.
"You’re back?"
"Yes, I saw that Chen Zhqing flipping earthen bricks."
"I think they might be fencing the yard. We still have a few hundred bricks here; should we give them? Otherwise, the rain would just spoil them."
"Sure, let them take it; you have a good impression of those two?"
"Yes, they never caused trouble while we were living together."
Old Yang chuckled; he really was easy-going with his temper. But it was quite nice after all.
Watching his wife cooking from the back, he went to the yard with a smile.
