Chapter 17 -17 Ability and Crystal Core
Han Yi fell silent for a moment before adding, “Jiaojiao, tell your brother about the Ability.””
Han Jiaojiao’s expression then relaxed. Compared to the first type of superficial inquiry, the current explanatory or narrative style of questioning was less likely to stress her out.
After thinking for a bit, she answered, “Abilities come in a wide variety, but they can generally be divided into four types: Enhancement Type, Control Type, Transformation System, and Psychic Type.”
“Enhancement Type, as the name suggests, is the strengthening of parts of the body, such as enhanced strength, enhanced speed, or the enhancement of vision and hearing; these all fall under the Enhancement Type, which is a relatively common Ability. The second type, Control Type, involves controlling the molecules of certain elements, like Water Control, Fire Control, or control over lightning and so on. The Transformation System is rarer; it involves part of the body being able to change, like invisibility or something similar, which are part of the Transformation System. Finally, the Psychic Type is the rarest. To my knowledge, Mental Search, Telepathy, and Hypnosis all fall within the category of Psychic Type. I’ve heard that powerful Superpower Users with Psychic Ability can even control living entities, but I’ve never seen it in my dreams.”
After listening, Han Yi asked her, “With so many types of Abilities, are Superpower Users common in the apocalyptic world?”
However, Han Jiaojiao shook her head, “Initially, they weren’t many, but as time went by, more and more people awakened Abilities. In my dream, my memory stops at four years after the apocalyptic event, and by that time, nearly half of the people at Beicheng Base had Abilities. The research institute in Beicheng Base once published a view; they believed that the longer an individual survives after the apocalyptic event, the more likely they are to awaken an Ability. This is because in harsh environments, a creature’s natural instinct drives their body to evolve in favorable ways, so the chances of awakening increase.”
Han Yi thought for a moment and asked, “How different is Yan Xiao’s early awakening compared to others?”
Han Jiaojiao cautiously replied, “I think it should be good, as he’ll have more time to get familiar with his Ability, but its power will depend on his personal talent.”
Han Yi nodded thoughtfully, “So it seems, being an early awakener doesn’t have too many advantages. If Yan Xiao’s talent is mediocre, he could easily be overtaken by newcomers.”
Han Jiaojiao thought about it and had to agree. She remembered that Su Xue awakened her Water Ability after entering the base. Initially, she could only control a very thin stream of water. At the time, Han Jiaojiao was delighted and gave Su Xue all the Crystal Cores she earned from missions to help enhance her Ability. Even so, after a year, Su Xue’s water beam was only as thick as a baby’s arm, but by then, many new awakeners could produce water beams as thick as an adult’s arm.
Moreover, after a year, the base no longer had difficulties with water, so Su Xue’s Ability was almost useless in combat. Even after she joined the logistics group, it still seemed very insubstantial.
As for Yan Xiao’s talent, Han Jiaojiao wasn’t sure, but she felt that if he had plenty of Crystal Cores to enhance his power, he probably wouldn’t be too bad, right?
“There is a way…” Han Jiaojiao slowly began, “Inside some mutant creatures, microorganism spores condense into an energy source, which looks like a kind of mineral crystal. Everyone calls it Crystal Core. Crystal Cores can enhance Abilities to some extent.”
Han Yi raised an eyebrow.
Energy crystals produced inside the body? That sounded truly unbelievable.
Han Jiaojiao added, “Not all mutant creatures can produce Crystal Cores. Only those that have grown and are of a high level have them in their bodies.”
After thinking for a while, Han Yi asked, “What about humans? Do individuals with Abilities have something like that in their bodies?”
Humans?…
Han Jiaojiao shook her head, “No, there’s never been any talk of something like that in the human body…”
Han Jiaojiao’s voice grew softer, and she trailed off abruptly.
—Really none? Does not hearing about it mean it doesn’t exist? Maybe… perhaps there are, but the information hasn’t been made public, to avoid infighting?
An answer was screaming to break free from the bottom of her heart, and her face turned as white as a sheet!
Could it be… humans really do have… Crystal Cores?
Han Jiaojiao’s gaze went distant, and she seemed to lose her soul.
“Jiaojiao, Jiaojiao!”
Han Jiaojiao snapped back to reality and saw her brother’s face, her heart aching dully in waves!
“Brother, I feel a bit uncomfortable…” Han Jiaojiao suppressed the fury inside her, her voice trembling as she spoke, “I want to lie down for a while…”
Han Jiaojiao looked terrible at the moment. Her entire body was trembling slightly, her complexion pale as paper, appearing as if she might collapse at any moment.
Han Yi clenched his lips tightly, remaining silent as he scooped her up in his arms and quickly walked up the stairs to the bedroom on the second floor, then gently placed her on the bed.
Han Jiaojiao knew she wasn’t feeling well. But she just couldn’t control the emotional turmoil inside her. The mere thought of that possibility filled her with uncontrollable hatred! She wished she could kill those people right now!!!
“Brother, I’m fine…” She didn’t want her brother to see her like this, “Brother, could you get me a glass of milk? …I want it with sugar…”
Knowing full well she was trying to send him away, Han Yi still stood up and tenderly kissed her on the forehead, “All right, wait for a bit, sister.”
“Mhm.”
As Han Yi left the room, the tide of hatred filled Han Jiaojiao’s eyes with blood-red veins, she bit her lip fiercely, her fingernails digging into her palms.
In her previous life, she had been—utterly foolish!
Back then she had felt those people were unreasonable, but if… If Crystal Cores really existed in the human body… Everything made sense. She was a complete and utter fool! If she had known sooner, if she had realized the danger her brother faced every day… how could she have borne to be at odds with him?… She would have told her brother sooner that she no longer hated him, that she had forgiven him… For the sake of that ridiculous self-esteem, for that so-called ladylike reserve, what had she done?!
——
The sky was gloomy; the cold wind outside made the windows buzz. It was still the afternoon, yet the whole town had already plunged into darkness.
Inside the dark, damp room, Qin Nanyi opened her bleary eyes, and her pretty face turned deathly pale the moment she became alert.
“Han Jiaojiao?!” She cried out in shock and rage, at the same time realizing that her hands and feet were tightly bound.
The woman leaning against the wall lifted her head, her voice calm, “You’re awake, huh.”
Qin Nanyi struggled, but realizing she couldn’t break free, she frantically examined her own body.
Han Jiaojiao stood still and watched her for a while, then slowly, bit by bit, stepped out from the shadows… That was a body so thin it was almost skeletal, especially the hollow sleeve, which sent chills down Qin Nanyi’s spine.
The emaciated Han Jiaojiao no longer had her past beauty; only from her facial features could she vaguely distinguish the former glamour.
She approached Qin Nanyi expressionlessly, slowly crouched down, and looked straight into her eyes.
“Don’t worry, I didn’t inject you with that kind of serum,” Han Jiaojiao spoke indifferently, “At first, I indeed wanted you to feel the pain I felt back then, but as you know, it’s hard to sneak into the scientific research facility, and I really don’t have the patience to wait…”
Qin Nanyi screamed in utter terror—
“Han Jiaojiao! Have you gone mad! Let me go right now!!!”
