Chapter 14 -14 New Partner

Xiao Jian took off his hat and nodded at them with a slight smile. He seemed very gentle and clean, and his features tended toward the delicate.

Yan Xiao was the complete opposite. Han Jiaojiao felt that he was like a mix of punk, retro, hippie, and modern runway model. A man with a ponytail was eye-catching enough, but he was even wearing knee-high studded leather boots—the studs weren’t the kind with processed tips but were sharp and fierce!

Han Jiaojiao muttered to herself, “Doesn’t he jab his hands when he puts those boots on?”

Regardless, Han Jiaojiao still greeted them politely.

“Hi, Yan Xiao, Hi, Xiao Jian, I’m Han Jiaojiao.” Ah, this form of address really feels awkward.

Han Yi’s face grew colder as he spoke, “We’re not that far apart in age; no need to call us ‘brother’.”

Xiao Jian didn’t react much, but Yan Xiao’s long, narrow phoenix eyes stared at Han Jiaojiao with interest.

“Yeah, we wouldn’t dare expect the same treatment as Han, just call us by our names. Oh, Han’s sister has grown up so fast! Do you still remember me?”

Han Jiaojiao looked at Han Yi, puzzled.

Han Yi glanced coldly at Yan Xiao, “First, bring the stuff inside.”

Yan Xiao shivered and rubbed his arms, then ran to the back to open the van door. He whispered to Xiao Jian beside him, “What’s the situation now? Has Han finally seen the light after guarding cloudily?… Did Han do something heroic during the shooting incident?”

Xiao Jian nodded vaguely, “Maybe.” Young girls are always easily touched.

“Hey! I need to tell Changyuan this!”

His voice was very low, but at this quiet hour of night, even the faintest sound could be clearly heard by Han Jiaojiao. Han Jiaojiao’s eyes twitched viciously—Yan Xiao really was a gossip!

—The two vehicles had quite a lot of stuff, but thankfully, they only needed to move it into the yard, not inside the house. After everything was moved, they could slowly sort things out once they closed the iron gate. Even so, the three men went back and forth for quite a while. Initially, Han Jiaojiao wanted to help, but the items were all boxed up, and even the smallest box was nearly half her height. After moving a few lighter ones, she felt it wasn’t efficient. Seeing the men sweating profusely, she ran to the kitchen and graciously made them noodles.

During this period, with Zhang Ma’s short-term training, she had made significant progress. She could now cook some simple dishes. They weren’t superb but were quite good. Using the broth left by Zhang Ma, Han Jiaojiao made a large pot of chicken noodle soup, skimmed the oil off, and served three bowls on the table. Then she took a clean towel and went out to find Han Yi.

The courtyard, previously cleared of plants, now had large open areas filled with boxes of various sizes. As soon as Han Jiaojiao saw Han Yi, she grabbed him and started to wipe his sweat with the towel.

“Brother, let them handle the rest, okay? Your wound has just healed,” Han Jiaojiao said, feeling distressed.

Han Yi leaned against a box to rest, bowing his head while Han Jiaojiao busied herself with the towel on his face.

Knowing that Han Yi had been shot not long ago, Xiao Jian set down a box he was carrying and said, “Han, take a break. There’s not much left; Xiaoyan and I can finish in two more trips.”

Han Jiaojiao immediately took a liking to Xiao Jian and promptly said to him, “Then come inside quickly after you finish. If you’re tired, take a break and have some food.”

Xiao Jian smiled and walked out.

Han Jiaojiao held onto Han Yi’s arm, pulling him towards the house while fussing over him, “Brother, are you tired? Does your arm hurt? What about your legs? If it hurts, don’t move later. Oh, you’ve sweated a lot, do you want to take a shower…”

Han Yi had a smile at the corner of his mouth as he silently listened to her speak.

Not long after they entered the house, Yan Xiao and Xiao Jian came in too. Since it was just among friends, there was no need for formalities; they sat down at the dining table and began eating noodles.

Han Yi wasn’t very hungry. He ate half a bowl of noodles but drank a lot of the soup. Yan Xiao and Xiao Jian, having driven for hours, were already hungry and quickly finished the chicken noodle soup. Han Jiaojiao looked around, feeling a bit embarrassed; she had underestimated the men’s appetite. So, somewhat sheepishly, she stood up and said, “Did you all not get enough to eat? There’s more in the kitchen, I can cook some more…”

Han Yi stopped her, speaking indifferently, “Don’t bother; they’ll have digestion problems if they eat too much at night.”

Upon hearing Han Yi’s words, Yan Xiao was inwardly delighted, thinking to himself, Has Han Ge become considerate? Is Han Ge becoming considerate now?

Xiao Jian, very seriously nodding, said, “Mm, eating about seventy percent full is enough to keep the stomach padded.” He then looked at Han Yi. “Han Ge, where will we sleep later?”

“Third floor. There are toothbrushes, towels, and bedding; just bring your own pajamas next time.”

“Mm. Han Ge, tomorrow, Xiaoyan and I should move those things outside to the basement before we leave.” Xiao Jian was very thoughtful; he was worried about Han Yi moving those things by himself might affect his wounds.

Yan Xiao chimed in on the side, “Yeah, the other stuff is not a big deal, but those few boxes of ammunition lying outside feel somewhat unsettling.”

Han Yi’s expression remained calm, “That’s not urgent, the things won’t get lost in the yard. You go to Changyuan first and handle things quickly.” He paused, then added, “If someone is watching, don’t engage. Just abandon the location immediately and make sure you come back within half a month no matter what.”

Yan Xiao, unsettled by Han Yi’s words, said, “Han Ge, why does it sound like the end of the world? It’s like if we don’t come back in half a month, we’ll miss Noah’s Ark…”

Han Jiaojiao burst out laughing.

This guy really is funny, thinking about getting on Noah’s Ark.

But then she thought, isn’t Noah’s Ark just a chance to survive? So being together with her brother was like being on the Ark already, and more so, a particularly safe Ark at that.

Yan Xiao didn’t mind being laughed at by the young lady. He couldn’t contain his curiosity and babbled to Han Yi, “Then tell us more, will you? Ever since you got me involved with that batch of arms, I’ve been restless, and then out of nowhere there’s talk of a meteor hitting the Earth; Han Ge, you’re really something…”

Xiao Jian also looked over, clearly just as confused.

Han Yi responded calmly, “The meteor was already monitored by scientists; they just didn’t make it public to avoid panic. I got the news by accident.”

“So this half a month is…”

Han Jiaojiao, grinning, interjected, “Because in half a month, there might be major traffic jams.”

Their city, Qingjiang City, being one of the more bustling cities within Lingnan Province, was also one of the main cities for disaster relief. Thus, many people from the disaster area might choose to settle there. As the sea level rose, people from the coastal areas moving to other cities also added to the traffic pressure near this city. Of course, the congestion existed only on the highways into the city, so if they didn’t want to be stuck on the road for two or three days, it was best to come back as soon as possible.

With less than five hours until dawn, they didn’t talk much more and each went to their rooms to rest. To Han Jiaojiao’s surprise, Xiao Jian took the initiative to clear the table, while Yan Xiao and Han Yi seemed unsurprised. Han Jiaojiao felt it was a bit inappropriate, considering Xiao Jian must be tired from the journey, but Han Yi was already taking her hand to go upstairs. Yan Xiao, noticing her concerns, said with a laugh, “Don’t worry, when we used to go on outdoor adventures, we’d take turns washing Han Ge’s dishes, and I’ve washed them quite a few times myself!”

Han Jiaojiao widened her eyes in surprise. Her brother was always so cool!
