Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 95: Parenthood
Chapter 95 - Parenthood
Kelly was born three days late. She was a beautiful girl. She looked just like her father. Nora looked at the face of her daughter with a huge grin and she sat in the playroom with her children, Monil and Janel and their son, Van, who had the protector gene, like his fathers. The house became more lively as they were able to hire more staff to help take care of the home. She had help with childcare now that they were able to identify both threats and protectors by their genetics, which were readily available if they were members of the lower Classes.
Sirona and Astra were now almost four years old. They were already able to read and write. They were learning at their own pace as Nora recreated the Montessori toys she and her sister used in school and at home in her childhood. Fiona and Ivy were also learning at a quick pace and their sisters were insistent on playing with them and showing them toys. The nursery had become quite lively, syncing their naps and sleep schedule with a lively infant like Kelly was difficult. She pulled out a blue stuffed bunny she had sewn for Vail when she heard that the couple was expecting.
"This is for Van. I am sorry I did not have it ready when you brought him home. He is so beautiful." Nora looked at the baby Bitas that they had brought home. It was preposterous that they had to spend so much social credit on having him created from their combined DNA. He understood why his fathers sacrificed so much for him. Janel looked lovingly at his son and snapped out of his trance to see Nora wiggling the bunny in front of Van. All of Nora's children had one of a different color. Janel recognized the toy that they usually brought with them for checkups. He broadly smiled at his friend.
"Thank you." Janel said, touched at the gesture. Fiona waddled up and reached for the toy.
"No Fi, yours is over there, this is Vans." Fiona started to have a temper tantrum and started to cry her eyes out and wail. This caused Kelly to start to fuss as her sister accidentally nudged her hand out of her mouth.
"Watch out for Kelly, Fi. You are going to hurt your sister," Nora said in a stern voice. Sirona retrieved her sister's bunny from her crib.
"Here you go Fiona. Stop crying. Show yours to Van." Sirona said, showing her sister the toy and handing it to her, prompting a shocked look from Janel. Nora smiled, slightly nervously. Her children were very intelligent, and it would be shocking to an outsider to see a small child solving a situation this way. It was mature.
"See Fiona, your Bunny is purple, Van's Bunny is blue. Like Daven's Bunny, right? Let's go play somewhere safe." Fiona calmed down as Sirona talked to her and took her hand.
Astra came out of the bathroom with Kadir onto the scene. Seeing that Sirona was handling it, she crawled up onto a U- shaped rocking platform and lied down on the cushion with a napping Ivy and picked up reading her book again. Fiona followed the instructions and pulled herself up with her bunny, sobering herself of her tantrum.
"Baby, look." Fiona shook her bunny at Van, giving the baby a slightly wet smile. Sirona grabbed her little sister's hand. "Let's go play, Fiona," Sirona said. Both their sisters were very low energy, Astra was more of a calm and reflective child, Ivy loved to sleep and stuck to her side. They both toddled off to play.
"I am glad you took a break to recuperate. Your test results are looking a lot better now that you have taken the time to replenish your body." Janel said, watching the remarkable children play. Nora watched Janel with amusement. Talan understood Janel's request to take a break after her pregnancy with Kelly. Nora took her friend's advice to heart. It was nice to have a break. She was able to enjoy the wine she had been brewing and relax without being constantly sore. Mostly it gave her time to be present with her daughters and really dive into teaching them and creating items for them to learn. Nora turned on a flashing ball and put it in Kelly's tiny hands.
"The toys really help with challenging them and giving them independence. I will make sure all of your children have access to toys and educational products that you find in this room." Nora smiled. Quill Infant and Childcare products will be manufacturing her Montessori equipment. Simple soft rings, blocks, color-changing balls, stackable items and knock-down toys for infants had already been created and tested on multiple children outside of her family with great results. The puzzles, slightly functional adult imitation toys like brooms, dustpans, kitchenettes, bathrooms, climbing and building toys were created and tested inside their home. Janel looked at his young son, he finally felt at ease enough to raise a child, and it was working out better than he had ever dreamed.
"Thank you, Nora. It is really a huge paradigm shift that our children are even interacting together. I cannot thank you enough." Janel said to his friend. He often wondered how his life would be if he lived under the care of a Matriarch like Nora. Now Van would be living in the scenario he often thought about. He would grow into a man and work for Quill too. He would not know the problems that other men had to deal with. They both easily had enough credit to create Van with their genes. He might in a couple of years add another child to their family.
"Actually, I cannot thank you enough. I want to normalize exactly this kind of activity with my daughters and sons. That they should interact respectfully with all members of society. It will take generations, maybe, before we see the change we hope for," Nora said. Nora felt a twinge of sadness for the segregated society. Would they have gone to these extents hundreds of years ago to maintain their standard of living and species if they knew what would happen to their society as a result? The Toba Volcanic reaction that had forced the humans of Nora's world happened at a time when they did not have the technology or speed to endure the disaster that starved early humanity to near extinction. Humanity recovered and spread across the planet.
The crisis that this world created was due to their desire to survive and narcissism. It created such a profound trauma that reached to the absolute top of their society. The trauma that each of her spouses in the upper echelons of society were burdened with made her shudder to wonder what others who were not as fortunate had gone through. Janel had been cornered and used as a Gimmel so violently. Monil had stories about being exploited sexually at events and not being able to report it in the fear that he would lose his life. Van and other children deserved better. They could start on the more imminent issues that people were in fear of in their lifetimes if they were successful. If they were unsuccessful, they would find some way to do it before they breathed their last breath.
"Perhaps you can just leave them? You do not need to reply immediately to every message?" Cerez said as he looked over.
"How is hiring going?" Kai asked as he looked over at Liem as well. He had been sighing for the past hour.
"I have twelve new employees onboard," Liem said, rubbing his temples in stress. He could not have imagined that Nora would have so many daughters. It was a lucky thing for their world but a stressful thing for their clan. The Leadership Council was in contact with their clan with numerous requests for genetic testing. Being as successful as they were now, as well as Nora going to events and her entertainment career presented some benefits. Since she was renowned, they could not just take her away from them now that she was very much in the eyes of the public. Would their daughters have to be visible on purpose as well? He was going to have to talk with Kai, and he was not looking forward to asking him for Solina's protection and resources. Kelly was the heir to Clan Setton's multiple Security, Military, Weapons, and Peacekeeping businesses.
The discussion that they would have about this together would set the tone for Talan's cooperation. Kai and Talan were still seeing Janel regularly. Talan was slowly requiring less sedation to fall asleep and doing well with the family, as far as Liem, Kadir and Cerez had observed. Kai did not medicate. He was an unknown variable. Liem thought nervously,
'Was Kai a volcano ready to explode?. Would he be willing?' Liem thought. Solina had been requesting to see her heir for months in a very passive manner to him.
'What was Kai dealing with, what sort of relationship does he have with his mother? I cannot bear much time with Allurai now. Going home only made it worse? What if he refuses?' Liem thought he had overcome his trauma with Leilanna and his mother. He would hesitate to ask them for help. He tried his best to empathize with Kai, but he knew a little about what his Great Matriarch had done to him and what Solina did. It was appalling and very sad. He was sent away and kept away. He could not imagine what he went through. Cerez looked over at Liem, seeing him rub his brow.

"What is it now, another government request for Nora?" Cerez asked, feeling worried about it himself.
"Yes and I think that before they get more enthusiastic, we need to speak to Kai about building a relationship with his mother to have Clan Setton as allies. Solina has been messaging me. What do you think, Talan?" Liem said, turning to Talan who had been working in the room with him.
"That is a hard thing to ask him, but it is her life, our children's lives, our lives and our mission that is at stake if the government gets too pushy. What would we be without her?" Talan said, his heart clenching. He envisioned what his life would be like with her and what would happen to her, but not only their children if the wrong people got their hands on them. He knew what parents could do to their own children. He could not imagine what cold-heartless mass breeders would do with a woman like Nora.
"I am positive we can persuade him. I believe that when the time came for me to make that decision, I would need to set very specific ground rules for contact. There would have to be no possible way for my parents to be in the room alone with the children." Talan explained passionately.
"We should see if Nora is ready to try for Talan's Heir. She should be coming up to her cycle in ten days. She is with Janel, Monil and their son downstairs." Cerez said aloud, forgetting how naturally it happened to him. Talan blushed. It was not like he was not used to being intimate with her, or had not joined in when she was willing. But she had followed her cycle closely to make sure she was not going to have to go through injecting supplements again. As comfortable as they could make her, it was still uncomfortable and draining. As much as he looked forward to being a father, he understood what a sacrifice she was making. This was taking a toll on her body.
