Quick Transmigration: The Mad Beauty Refuses to Be the Scapegoat!-Chapter 58: The Cannon Fodder Sister of the Female Lead (Part 10)
Around 5:30 the next morning, Jiang Lai got up to wash up. In the early autumn morning, the water in the vat was already a bit cold on the hands. Jiang Lai noticed Liu Shuping, who was feeding chickens in the courtyard, and after casually wiping his face, he walked over to help her carry the watering bucket.
"Why are you up so early? Your brother went to the next village to sell saplings and hasn’t come back yet."
"Couldn’t sleep, so I got up. You do your watering, I’m just idling otherwise."
"You girl... at last, you’ve become sensible."
Jiang Lai had always been quite filial, but being young, she liked to be mischievous and got angry easily. Because she was the youngest, her parents didn’t have high expectations for her, which eventually made her develop a spoiled and dramatic nature.
Halfway through the watering, Jiang Qu also woke up.
After the autumn harvest, everyone was idle. Liu Shuping had already cooked up some porridge in the pot and seeing Jiang Qu also get up, asked Jiang Lai to have breakfast together.
The pot kept warm the corn porridge, and because the harvest wasn’t good this year, there was quite a bit of coarse rice mixed in, making it scratchy to drink.
Besides porridge and steamed cornmeal buns, there were six eggs laid aside in a bowl on the stove.
"After you finish breakfast, each of you take three eggs to school, and there are yellow buns packed in the net bags, each of you take one bag,"
Jiang Qu took an egg out and handed it to Liu Shuping.
"Mom, you eat one, you should really replenish after the harvest,"
"Mom won’t eat it, the eggs should be eaten by you students to get into college, what’s the point of me eating them,"
"Mom, just eat it, I don’t like eggs."
At this moment, Jiang Lai came over, and upon hearing what Jiang Qu said, she directly added,
"Mom, you might as well leave it for Brother to eat, Sis used to have an egg every day, Brother and Dad didn’t have any, so Sis, why don’t you save your eggs for Big Brother and Dad, and when we get to school, I’ll share my eggs with you."
After speaking, Jiang Lai took the bag of eggs from Jiang Qu’s hand and handed it to Liu Shuping.
"Either everyone eats them, or no one does, right, Sis?"
Jiang Qu came back to her senses and looked at Jiang Lai handing her egg to their mom with a sensible and cute look on her face, a wave of displeasure and grievance surged in her heart.
She forced a smile out.
"Yes, Mom, if we eat, we should eat together."
Liu Shuping was so moved by these two sisters, especially by Jiang Lai, she couldn’t help but smile continuously praising her.
"Sanya has become sensible, she knows how to care for her parents."
Jiang Lai smiled and walked over, affectionately hugging Liu Shuping’s arm.
"I’ve learned a lot since going to school, all thanks to Mom and Dad, so I can continue studying."
"Yes, now I see that studying is indeed useful. Study well with your sister, strive to get into college too!"
"Okay! I will definitely study hard with Sister!"
After breakfast, carrying the rations, Jiang Qiuhe rode his borrowed bike with Jiang Lai, while Jiang Qu rode another. The three siblings set off for school.
It was a nearly three-hour journey. Along the way, Jiang Lai and Jiang Qiuhe chatted and laughed, and from time to time, Jiang Lai pulled out a couple of dried plums from her pocket and popped them into Jiang Qiuhe’s mouth.
Jiang Qiuhe was strong and had no trouble carrying Jiang Lai for over three hours on the bike, but to accommodate Jiang Qu, they still rested for over half an hour on the way.
At the school gate, after sending off Jiang Qiuhe, Jiang Qu looked at Jiang Lai.
"You’ll have to learn to ride a bike yourself; Big Brother can’t always escort you."
"When you had just started high school and couldn’t ride a bike, didn’t Big Brother endure and escort you for over a year? Why didn’t you think to learn quickly then? He’s only escorted me twice so far."
Jiang Qu was left speechless by the retort.
She didn’t understand why Jiang Lai had suddenly become so sharp-tongued, refusing to suffer any loss, and becoming more unreasonable and stubborn.
"I can’t argue with you. I’m going back to class; my classmate just lent me two novels that I haven’t read yet."
Jiang Lai raised an eyebrow.
"What novels?"
"Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong."
Jiang Lai’s eyes lit up, which Jiang Qu noticed.
"My classmate went through great trouble to get these hand-copied versions, very precious. I have to return them after reading."
After finishing, she paused, waiting for Jiang Lai’s reaction.
In the past, this was when Jiang Lai would grab her arm and happily shout "Sister."
But this time, Jiang Lai showed no intention of speaking, acting as if she hadn’t heard what was just said.
Seeing that class was about to start, Jiang Qu took the initiative to say,
"If someone around you wants to read it, you can borrow it from me. I’m off to class."
"Go ahead, go ahead."
Jiang Lai’s odd behavior left Jiang Qu thinking about it until she got to her classroom.
Not only had Jiang Lai become prettier, but her personality had also become sly and cunning compared to before.
Moreover, she was surprisingly sycophantic towards He Xing and extremely good to Jiang Qiuhe.
Could it be that she was reborn too?
Jiang Qu was reborn herself, so she naturally believed this could happen to others as well.
Jiang Lai’s various oddities made her more convinced of her suspicion, so now she had to find a chance to verify her guess.
Next came the high school’s mock test scores for the upper set.
Jiang Qu came third, a position that should guarantee entry into a college, but thinking about He Xing’s future achievements, she felt this score was far from enough.
She had worked much harder than others, yet her scores merely hovered within the top ten of her grade.
Jiang Qu had her own goal, which was the Finance University in this city, to study finance, as this major would be very popular in the future and could help He Xing manage the company.
Thinking of this, she took out competition questions that He Xing brought her from out of town and started reviewing. As someone with little English background, the only thing she could do in senior year was to make the most of her stronger math skills.
On the other side, Jiang Lai returned to the dormitory and began poring over English books that she found in He Xing’s courtyard. In the afternoon during the math class, the teacher called both her and her deskmate up to the blackboard to solve problems.
Cheng Lie, who had been sleeping all morning, yawned. With one hand in his pocket and the other holding a chalk, he "swished" on the board to write something.
Jiang Lai also started solving the problem, their speeds were about the same, and they simultaneously put down their chalk and returned to their seats.
At this point, Jiang Lai looked up and noticed that Cheng Lie had used a completely different solving method, which was simpler and clearer, albeit a bit unconventional compared to her more conventional approach.
The math teacher nodded and tapped the blackboard.
"Don’t look at Cheng Lie’s solving method, come, all look at the problem Jiang Lai solved. Each step is clear! You can immediately understand what’s needed where conditions require it, where transformation is needed!"
After roughly mentioning Cheng Lie’s answer, the math teacher erased his writing but left Jiang Lai’s up there. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Luckily, Jiang Lai, with quick hands, copied Cheng Lie’s answer before the teacher wiped it away.
