Chapter 225: 8

Wright Group’s partnership with YL Corporation had been on paper since last year.

Everything was finally ready to move forward—until someone leaked Sophia’s true identity.

For a man like Eugene Wright, proud and nearing sixty, having his business tied to a woman who’d humiliated his family in public was intolerable. The Wright Group now faced paying triple liquidated damages to break the contract.

"President Morgan," Sean asked carefully, "how would you like to proceed?"

Sophia’s tone was even. "Among Wright’s business partners, there are three key companies—two overseas, one domestic. Which local company is still standing by them?"

"Scott Group," he replied immediately.

Sophia’s expression shifted slightly. Devin Scott.

She remembered their last conversation — the one where he’d asked her to join forces.

So that’s it. I turned him down... and he turned to the Wrights.

Sean interrupted her thoughts. "President Morgan, what would you like me to do?"

"Once the Wright Group officially cancels, use one of my private subsidiaries to approach them," she said. "I want a long-term partnership in place—stable, subtle, unshakable."

Sean blinked. "But if it’s under your name, won’t they realize it’s you?"

Sophia smirked. "That’s exactly what I want to test—your ability."

Her mind was already racing with new ideas. If the Wrights wanted to retreat, she would push harder.

"Oh, and one more thing," she added. "I heard the front gate security is making twenty-eight hundred a month. I distinctly remember setting the minimum at thirty-five hundred. Care to explain?"

Sean hesitated. "I—uh..."

"The company isn’t short on money," Sophia cut in sharply. "Don’t be stingy. I’ll only say this once—Sean, I see everything. Every decision made by this branch and every other domestic division passes under my watch. You can fight for personal achievement, but if I ever find anyone skimming profits or underpaying staff..." Her gaze was cold enough to cut glass. "YL will no longer have a place for them."

"Yes, President Morgan. I’ll investigate immediately and raise the salary."

Sophia stood, gathering her bag. "Do that." She walked out of the office without another glance.

Behind her, Sean wiped a thin layer of sweat from his neck. He hadn’t expected her to show up in person.

...

Outside the building, Sophia dialed a number.

"Let’s talk," she said.

...

At the restaurant.

"Well, well," Devin drawled, lounging in his seat in a dark athletic jacket. "Getting an invitation from Miss Morgan herself—now that’s rare."

He ate with unhurried confidence, like a man who knew he was being watched.

"Mr. Scott," Sophia said smoothly, "I’ll skip the small talk. I heard you’ve been doing business with the Wright Group."

Devin’s grin deepened. "So I’m on your radar now? I should be flattered—you keep such close tabs on me that I’m starting to feel like we’re... intimate."

Sophia’s lips curved faintly. "You do love flattering yourself."

When his plate was empty, Devin sat upright, folding his hands. "All right, Miss Morgan. No games. What do you want?"

"I want you to maintain your partnership with the Wright Group."

His brows rose. "You’re trying to bait me? That won’t work."

"I don’t use bait," she replied coolly. "I meant every word. You think partnering with Wright is a way to corner me? You’re underestimating me, Devin. If you really plan to go through with this alliance, then go all in. Just make sure you can last till the end—because otherwise, it’s not much of a game."

Sophia hadn’t called this meeting to negotiate. She just needed confirmation—and she got it.

Devin was using the Wright Group to provoke her.

Unfortunate for him, Sophia didn’t respond well to threats.

Devin leaned back, resting his chin on one hand. "You know," he said softly, "if you’d just say the word... I could cancel the deal with Wright right now."

His smile was charming—dangerously so.

But Sophia’s expression didn’t waver.

"Don’t." Sophia’s tone was calm but razor-sharp. "Like I said, I want you to keep working with them. Go all the way. Make it last."

She leaned back, almost amused. "Oh, and just so you know, the Wrights aren’t my only enemies. Add the Trumps and the Morgans to that list. Even Lucas’s dear uncle Aiden has decided to make himself my opponent. Why don’t you all just form a little alliance? Come at me together—it might make things more interesting."

Devin let out a short, disbelieving laugh. "You really think you can handle that many enemies? Aren’t you getting a bit cocky?"

"Maybe," Sophia replied with a faint smirk. "But when you’ve actually earned your arrogance, it’s a waste not to show it off."

Devin frowned, a flicker of unease crossing his eyes. "Scott Group’s foundation is stronger than YL’s. You can’t take us down that easily."

"You’re right," Sophia said evenly. "That’s why I’ll take my time. I’ll dismantle you slowly—bit by bit. After all, I’m younger than you. I’ve got plenty of years to watch your empire crumble."

His jaw tightened. Was she seriously that vindictive? Every time something didn’t go her way, she drew a line in the sand—friend or foe, black or white, no middle ground.

Sophia’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. "I don’t do moral gray. I’m the kind of woman who hates evil and doesn’t forgive betrayal. And just because someone shares an enemy with me doesn’t mean they’re my ally. Sometimes, it just makes them a stronger rival."

She stood, adjusting her jacket. "Anyway, Mr. Scott, I’ll admit—this dinner wasn’t a total waste. Consider it a fair trade for confirming what I already suspected. I’ll cover the bill. You just... enjoy your meal."

Her tone was honeyed steel. She turned, heels clicking against the marble floor, six little ones following behind her like a parade of mini bodyguards—each with their chin tilted up in defiant pride as they passed his table.

Devin watched her go, his lips curving into a dark grin. He stabbed his knife into his steak and murmured under his breath, "Sophia Morgan... you really are something else."
