Chapter 96: Dejavu

96-

Evelyn POV

Sigh.

Daphne has gone to her mud fights, I just had a meeting with the ladies to stop their scheming, one of them tried to poison the other, the duke has become a menace laying his hands on too many of the moderately attractive maids.

I cannot say anything because he is doing a great job, and quite frankly I do not care at all. He can lay with the whole kingdom for all I care.

I stand, and tug on a robe, a really thick furry one, I need to see Daphne, I’ll just meet her in the carriage, outside the town.

I haven’t been able to do that of late, being busy so I should. That’s definitely the only reason.

I lean against the carriage, I had to avoid Frida’s judgemental stare and her heart attack, I can’t believe I actually left the estate in just my inner wear.

That’s when I see, Daphne coming from the trees, she sees me, and a slow, warm smile spreads across her face.

How addictive this feeling is.

She’s so handsome, no wonder the ladies in the town swoon over her, but she’s mine.

The moment she reaches me, I cup her face in my hand and kiss her, she pulls me closer by waist.

I lose all feeling in my legs.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?" she murmurs against my lips, amusement in her voice.

I don’t answer.

I kiss her again, deep and slow, claiming her.

She chuckles softly, breath warm against my cheek.

"I do not wish, to give anyone that might use this route a show, Duchess’."

She helps me in and closes the carriage door, hitting the door two times for the driver to start driving, I tug off the coat and let it fall.

She barely takes a seat.

Her body goes rigid.

"Wait—" She pauses. "How the hell did you get here like this?" Her voice is sharp, borderline panicked.

A sharp sense of familiarity - swipes across my mind like we’ve lived through this moment before. Which is impossible really.

But it’s a nagging persistent feeling.

"It’s not like I’m naked." I say, crossing legs.

"You might as well be, that’s the problem, what if someone saw you?" She says panicked.

And that feeling again.

"But no one did." I say, flipping my hair.

"Duchess I’m serious, don’t do this again." She says so serious and I roll my eyes.

"Are you going to keep being that way, or will you make use of the time before we arrive at the estate?" I ask tugging on my bodice down and revealing my chest.

I cannot believe I’m so bold.

Daphne POV

There’s an image, of someone, I can’t see her face in the car, and I feel like I’ve lived through this moment before.

That’s when Evelyn tugs on the top of that ugly medieval white long gown, exposing her chest, I did think these were ugly when I first got here, now they have a particular charm to them.

I’m only a woman, how can I think straight.

"Come here." I say leaning against the carriage wall, and tapping on my legs and she quickly straddles me and I kiss her.

Evelyn POV

She’s not nice and slow today, she holds my thighs in a painful grip, and kisses me, it’s amazing.

Her kisses move to my jaw, to my neck, the sound of the carriage moving and hooves of horses, will cancel out my voice, I hope I don’t know.

Her fingers trail down my sides, dragging the silky fabric lower and lower, and I gasp, barely able to keep up with the pace she sets.

Her hand moves to my lower back, pressing me closer, anchoring me to her. I claw at her shirt, wanting more. Her name leaves my lips between gasps, reverent and desperate.

The carriage jerks slightly on the uneven road but neither of us care. I bury my face in the crook of her neck to muffle my sounds, clutching her tighter.

I don’t know who I am right now, but I never want this to end.

I don’t know who I am right now, but I never want this to end.

Her hands move slowly, confidently, up the length of my thighs, and I shiver—not from cold, but from the sheer intensity of feeling. Every brush of her fingers feels like a secret being uncovered. My skin is taut with anticipation, every nerve alert beneath her touch.

The gown pools around my waist in soft folds, forgotten, and her palms are warm and deliberate as they roam across my hips. She presses her forehead to mine for a moment, grounding us both, before she leans down to press a kiss just above my heart.

My heart stutters.

I reach for her, threading my fingers through the damp strands of her hair and hold her close.

"Daphne," I whisper, because I need to say her name, need her to know that it’s her. Only her.

She lifts her head and meets my eyes, and for a heartbeat, the air shifts. The teasing melts away. What’s left is raw and terrifying in its honesty.

"I know," she says, like she hears all the words I haven’t spoken.

"Me too."

She kisses me again, and it’s different this time—slower, deeper, reverent. She kisses me like she’s memorizing me. Like she’s promising something.

And I believe her.

Her hand trails up my spine, drawing me closer, until I’m flush against her, and the heat between us is unbearable in the best way.

"Don’t be shy now," she murmurs, her voice rough and low against my ear. Her breath fans across my skin, and I shiver—despite the warmth pooling everywhere our bodies touch.

I had courage before. Now it’s gone.

This is the open daylight slipping through the narrow windows of the carriage. This is me, stripped bare in more ways than one, caught in her gaze that sees far too much. I’m not just undressed—I’m uncovered.

She senses it, of course she does. Daphne always knows.

Her fingers skim along the curve of my waist, slow and steady, anchoring me to her. My hands tremble where they rest on her shoulders, but I don’t let go.

"You’re beautiful like this," she says, like it’s a truth she’s always known.

"I wish you could see yourself."

I try to look away, but she catches my chin, gently coaxing me to face her again.

"Look at me," she says, and I do.
