Prosperous Marriage: Married to My Brother-in-law-Chapter 47 Friendship_1
Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Friendship_1
「9:00 a.m.」
Serendipity Cafe had just opened for business, and Rachel Bailey was the first customer. She chose a quiet seat in the farthest corner, waiting for Julia Bluen to arrive. Her ordinary face bore signs of fatigue, with dark circles under her eyes, clearly from a lack of sleep. She held a pair of dark sunglasses in her hand and clutched her fanny pack; she no longer dared to wear it around her waist, afraid it would be snatched again. Her 10,000 yuan salary was still in her bag; she hadn’t had time to deposit it into the bank yet.
The bizarre events she encountered yesterday had led to an entire afternoon and evening of harassment, making it impossible for her to enjoy her meals or get a good night’s sleep. She had even been coldly lectured by a police officer with a grim expression before he finally dropped her off.
This continued until last night when she couldn’t hold back her rage any longer. She confronted a Chief Financial Officer from some company, who was stationed outside her rented apartment, demanding to know why everyone was pestering her to join their companies. He replied that the Horne Family’s Scion, Glades Horne, had instructed his Assistant, Hansen Ruiz, to spread the word: "Anyone who offers her an accounting job can discuss business with Valence Group."
Valence Group—a commercial empire in the eyes of businesspeople. Anyone who managed to cooperate with Valence Group was guaranteed a profit. In these times, was making money easy? Such a golden opportunity led countless businesses to vie fiercely for the chance to bring Rachel Bailey into their companies, treating her as if she were a god of wealth.
Rachel Bailey was stunned. She had met the Horne Family’s Scion only once. He was probably helping her for Julia’s sake, right? She mused with a touch of exasperation. After being harassed for so long, it turned out to be a way for the Scion to dote on his wife, and she had merely basked in their reflected glory.
What made her curious was why her friend had married her own sister’s former fiancé. Had something gone wrong?
"Rachel."
Julia Bluen walked in and immediately spotted her sitting in the corner. It was impossible not to notice her since she was the only customer there. Julia walked briskly over, and just as she was about to sit down, she couldn’t help but laugh at Rachel’s attire. "Rachel, what’s with this look today? You’re wearing sunglasses? And all in black. Also, what happened to you? Did you fall hard yesterday, so much that it kept you up all night? You’ve even got dark circles under your eyes."
As she spoke, Julia tried to check for any injuries on Rachel.
"Julia, sit down!" Rachel stopped her from examining her wounds, her expression stern as she ordered in a low voice.
"Upset? Did I do something to anger you in my sleepwalking last night?" Julia giggled, sitting across from Rachel and summoning a waiter to order black coffee for both of them.
"Don’t laugh it off. You owe me an explanation!" Rachel feigned anger. "Do you even consider me a friend? You got married—such a huge thing—and didn’t even tell me? Fine, you got married, but to your own sister’s ex-fiancé? Where is your sister? And did you marry Glades Horne out of spite, or was there another reason? Julia, let me tell you, if you did this because you were heartbroken and trying to save face by snatching your sister’s fiancé, I’ll end our friendship!"
Julia’s smile faded. She remained silent until the waiter brought their coffees. Then, she picked up her cup, took a light sip of the scalding coffee, placed it back on the table, and finally revealed the truth to her friend.
After hearing her explanation, Rachel nervously reached out, took Julia’s hand, and said anxiously, "Julia, even though Glades seems like a good man, he and your sister were together for so many years. Your sister treated him like that, and now you’ve haphazardly married him in her place. Will he see you as a substitute for your sister? Or use this to get revenge on both of you? He was nice to you before the wedding, but what if he starts to subtly torment you afterward..."
"No! He’s not that kind of person!" Julia Bluen confidently interrupted her friend’s worries.
"Ever since I can remember, he has always been kind to me. Even when he and my sister became lovers, his kindness towards me never diminished; it even increased. I believe he wouldn’t treat me that way!" Everyone was concerned that Glades Horne was using her as a stand-in, but she was confident it was absolutely not the case!
The kindness Glades Horne showed her had never contained a hint of falsehood. Although she was also curious why Glades hadn’t reacted when she made that self-deprecating remark, only to take her to the Civil Affairs Office to register their marriage the very next day, she didn’t believe she was her sister’s replacement. Especially in their interactions these past few days after registering, she often had the surreal feeling that the person Glades truly loved wasn’t her sister, but her.
Rachel Bailey looked intently at her friend’s defense of and trust in the Horne Family’s Scion. Seeing the conviction in Julia’s eyes, she finally felt relieved and said, "That’s good then. As long as he’s not seeking revenge or seeing you as a stand-in, then you’ve really struck gold. That man, you can tell at a glance he’s a good guy."
Julia Bluen didn’t deny it.
Glades Horne had always been a good man in her heart!
Once, she had been happy for her sister, for meeting a man who was both impressive and kind. In public, he could command the wind and rain; at home, he was considerate and attentive to those he cared about.
When her sister had run away from the wedding, she had even felt a pang of sympathy for Glades Horne.
Now, things had changed in an instant; Glades Horne had become her other half. Even though she was still adjusting to this new reality, she couldn’t deny his good qualities.
"However, impressive men can sometimes bring trouble too," Rachel Bailey said, her tone shifting to one of complaint. Seeing the puzzled look on Julia Bluen’s face, she recounted in detail the harassment she had endured the previous day. After finishing, she gave Julia a wry smile. "Julia, you’ve married an impressive husband, and as your friend, I’ve certainly basked in the reflected glory—so much so, it’s nearly worn me to a crisp!"
HA HA...
Julia Bluen began to laugh, and as she did, she also felt grateful for Glades Horne’s kindness.
Wait, her friend got fired by Cosmos?
Her smile faded, and Julia Bluen’s face turned grim as she asked coldly, "Dio Powell, Nicholas Coldwell actually took his anger out on you? Despicable!"
Those shameless curs! They had wronged her, and then, upon discovering her identity, they actually dared to vent their anger on her best friend! Could they be any more despicable?
Did they really think that just because her identity was revealed, she would cut ties with Rachel Bailey? Their friendship would last forever!
"Don’t be angry; it’s not worth getting upset over people like that. Julia, fortunately, that faithless man miscalculated. Otherwise, you would never have been happy with him. It would be best if Cosmos Group went bankrupt and Nicholas Coldwell ended up working in a nightclub—though with his looks, no one would spare him a glance even for 10 yuan an hour." Rachel Bailey’s knack for insults was truly top-notch.
