Private Marriage, Secret Love-Chapter 187: Showing Up at the Door with the Identification Results
The surgery lasted nearly six hours. The baby was brought out of the operating room first, and finally, an unconscious Zion Lancaster was wheeled out.
The surgery was a success, and everyone was overjoyed. But only Raina Reddington knew the risks they had faced.
She walked out of the operating room and saw Ethan Lancaster waiting at the door.
Raina Reddington was too exhausted to speak and simply walked past him.
"Raina."
He called her name, but she never answered, as if he were talking to thin air.
Ethan Lancaster hurried after her. Raina glanced at him. "I’m exhausted. Since I just saved your sister’s life, do me a favor and stay away from me. Don’t bother me."
His legs froze as if they weren’t his own, and all he could do was watch her walk away.
Raina Reddington rarely left her home on her days off. Her phone’s contact list was pitifully short, and she had no idea what she would even do if she did go out.
The doorbell rang unexpectedly. Since moving in, Raina had never even met her neighbors, so there was no reason for anyone to be looking for her.
She walked to the door, looked through the peephole, and saw Ethan Lancaster standing outside.
Raina ignored it and turned to go back, but Ethan simply held the doorbell down, not letting go. "I know you’re in there. Open up, or I’ll find you at the hospital tomorrow."
The door was yanked open. Raina stared at him coldly. "What do you want?"
Ethan Lancaster held up the file folder in his hand. "Raina, do you have anything left to say?"
Raina’s expression remained unchanged, and she clearly had no intention of letting him in. "This is ridiculous..."
Ethan Lancaster stepped forward, wrapped his right arm around her waist, and lifted her off her feet. Raina shrieked, grabbing his arm. "What are you doing? Let go!"
He carried her into the living room with one arm. The moment he set Raina down, she scrambled away from him as if he were the plague.
"The test results are in. Do you want to see them?"
Raina tucked her shirt back in. She calmly held out her hand. "Of course I do."
Ethan Lancaster couldn’t quite figure her out. He pulled the documents from the folder and put them in her hand.
Raina’s gaze swept down the page, finally landing on the test results.
This didn’t surprise her in the slightest. After all, DNA was an indelible mark a person carried for their entire life.
Ethan Lancaster stepped forward, waiting for her to speak. He watched Raina’s face intently, hoping to see a flicker of shock, but she just casually tossed the papers onto the coffee table. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
"Well, what do you know. I wonder if Fourth Master pulled some strings to get this result?"
"Do I need to resort to such tricks?"
Raina remained calm and composed as she sat down on the sofa. "Who knows who you hired to do the test."
The corner of Ethan Lancaster’s eye twitched. "What do you mean by that?"
"I’m not Raina Reddington, and I don’t know you."
He jabbed a finger at the report. "Then explain this to me! What is this?"
Raina saw he was struggling to control his emotions, but even so, there was no denying the man’s handsome features.
She gave a slight shrug. "I have no idea."
"Raina!"
Her indifferent personality hadn’t changed one bit, but her behavior was practically slow-roasting Ethan Lancaster over a fire.
"Since you’re so insistent that I admit it, I’m out of options. Don’t you think there might be another possibility? Like in those TV dramas... what if I have amnesia?"
Ethan Lancaster’s hands, hanging at his sides, clenched into fists. "Don’t you try to fob me off with that nonsense!"
"Isn’t that the best explanation? In any case, I don’t know you, and I don’t know any Raina Reddington. I have my own name and my own life. Please get out!"
She emphasized the last three words, clearly intending to throw Ethan Lancaster out.
His face paled and flushed in turns. "The evidence is right here in front of you, and you’re going to play the amnesia card?"
Raina laughed softly. ’Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m doing. So what? It’s not like he can take a bite out of me, can he?’
"Can you really force me to say I know you?" Raina completely disregarded the report. ’So what if the results are out? Is Ethan Lancaster going to hold my head down and force me to admit it?’
’Legally speaking, Raina Reddington was dead. At most, she was nothing more than Ethan Lancaster’s deceased wife.’
He had come here today thinking victory was in his grasp. He’d been prepared for Raina to yell at him, even hit him. But he had never, ever expected this attitude.
"Just admit it. We can talk about everything else later. Right now, I just need you to say it: you are Raina Reddington."
’This man was used to being domineering, accustomed to controlling everything.’ Raina could see he was now teetering on the edge of losing control.
"I am not!" she said, biting out each word.
"Are you really going to force my hand?"
’Raina had nothing left to lose. What was there to be afraid of?’
"Suit yourself."
Ethan Lancaster didn’t want to go that far, either. He reached into his pocket and called Seth Sinclair. "Bring it up."
’This was the worst-case scenario,’ Seth Sinclair thought as he got out of the car and hurried to the trunk. ’It seems Ethan and Raina haven’t reached an agreement.’
Seth went upstairs. The door was open, and the apartment was silent. There was none of the arguing he had expected.
Only after he walked in did he see Ethan Lancaster standing, while Raina was sitting on the sofa, drinking from a glass of water.
She glanced out of the corner of her eye and saw Seth Sinclair walk in carrying something. He placed it on the coffee table and then unwrapped the outer layer of paper.
It was an urn.
’Ethan Lancaster had actually sent someone to Hemlock Village to dig up this very urn.’
Raina slowly lifted her eyes to him. "Are you insane?"
"You buried this with your own two hands. If you want Miles Hawthorne to have no peace even in death, then go on, keep pretending."
’Raina used to think that no matter how much of a scoundrel Ethan was, he at least had some limits. But ever since the incident with Zachary Lancaster, it was as if his dark side had erupted. His methods could now be described as deranged.’
She tightened her grip on the glass, her face a mask of indifference. "Aren’t you afraid it’s bad luck, bringing something like this to my door?"
"I don’t believe you don’t recognize it."
A vicious edge crept into Ethan Lancaster’s voice. "Raina, if you still don’t admit it, I’ll have someone scatter these ashes in the sea. Or maybe I’ll have them dumped in the filthiest place I can find, so you won’t even have this last memory to cling to."
’Ethan didn’t want to admit it, but he knew. To Raina, Miles Hawthorne’s ashes were probably as precious as her own life; she would risk everything to protect them.’
Raina didn’t say a word. Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest as he waited for her to finally admit the truth.
She swirled her wrist slightly, watching the water in the glass ripple. The circles lapped against the rim, nearly splashing over the edge.
Raina’s gaze met Ethan’s once more. Her hand stilled, though the water inside the glass continued to swirl. Then, Ethan watched as she flung the entire contents of the glass, dousing the urn completely.
