Private Marriage, Secret Love-Chapter 162: All His Kindness Towards Her Has Stopped
Ethan Lancaster almost threw his phone down. He shot a displeased glance at Gwen Sharp beside him.
Gwen Sharp quickly let go, standing cautiously to the side.
Ethan Lancaster hung up and got up to leave. Gwen Sharp hurried to follow.
Raina Reddington took the other elevator down. Back in her car, she placed her bag on the front passenger seat.
Seth Sinclair thought Ethan Lancaster and Gwen Sharp were going to eat dinner out. He didn’t expect Ethan to just pick her up and come straight back to the car.
Ethan Lancaster pulled out his phone without looking up. "Let’s head back."
"Yes, sir."
He’d been cold and dismissive ever since she’d met up with him. She scooted a little closer.
Ethan Lancaster pressed a finger to the tip of his nose. "What’s that smell?"
His gaze landed on Gwen Sharp, and he gave her shoulder a light shove. "Why do you smell so strong?"
"I just got my hair done. I had it colored."
Ethan Lancaster couldn’t stand the smell and rolled down the window. "What kind of salon did you go to? I told you not to worry about money. With a smell this overpowering, aren’t you afraid you’ll get poisoned?"
"But the salon is pretty good..."
"Stay away from me."
Gwen Sharp quickly retreated to the other side of the seat, a look of disappointment in her eyes. Still, she wanted to show Ethan Lancaster her new look. "The stylist said these curls are really in style. Does it look good?"
Ethan Lancaster gave her a cursory glance. "Mm."
That was it. Gwen Sharp opened her mouth to speak but stopped. Ethan Lancaster spoke again, "But you see that style all over the street. I think short hair looks good, too. It’s clean and sharp."
The smile on Gwen Sharp’s lips froze. She couldn’t help but think of how Raina Reddington had cut her long hair short just today.
The two cars left from different exits but soon ended up on the same road. The car in front of Raina was driving erratically, weaving into her lane one moment and squeezing into the next one over.
Just after a red light, Raina sped up. Seeing her lane was clear, that car cut back in again.
Raina glanced at the passenger seat. The lock of hair she’d cut off, tied up, was sitting there. If it weren’t for her upcoming treatment, she wouldn’t have been willing to cut her hair this short.
The car in front turned and drove off. Raina didn’t know how she had zoned out, but by the time she thought to hit the brakes, it was too late. The front of her car slammed hard into the rear of another vehicle.
Ethan Lancaster had been resting with his eyes closed. The impact jolted him forward. Seth Sinclair hurriedly pushed open his door to check on the situation.
He walked over and took a look, but quickly returned to the car. "Fourth Master, it’s the Young Madam."
’This is the middle of downtown. The traffic is moving slower than a bicycle. Besides, it’s not like Raina doesn’t recognize my car. She obviously hit me on purpose.’
Raina Reddington’s hands clenched the steering wheel. After the crash, she hadn’t even noticed the license plate of the car she’d hit. She just felt dizzy, and even this small impact made her body feel like it was falling apart.
The cars behind them were all honking. Seth Sinclair closed the door. "Let’s go."
"Go where?" Ethan Lancaster interjected. "Pull over to the side. We’ll deal with this properly."
Raina felt unwell. She slumped over the steering wheel and heard a tapping on her window.
She rolled down the window, only to see Seth Sinclair standing outside.
"Young Madam."
Her short, messy hair was disheveled. "What are you doing here?"
"You should pull your car over to the side first."
Raina forced herself to sit up straight. The heat was blasting inside the car. She pulled back her arm, subtly tugging her cuff down. Obvious red spots had already appeared on her skin. Now, with the window open, she felt cold. She looked at the car in front of her.
"I... I hit his car?"
Seth Sinclair nodded.
"It’s nothing serious, right?" Raina didn’t want to waste time here.
Seth Sinclair looked troubled. "The Fourth Master said you need to pull over and resolve this."
Raina grabbed the jacket beside her and put it on. "I understand."
She pulled the car to the far side of the road. Ethan Lancaster got out of the car in front. Although Raina was bundled in a thick padded jacket, she didn’t dare to get out.
The night wind felt like knives scraping against her skin. Her whole body ached, as if her bones were being gnawed on. Ethan Lancaster walked up to her car and looked at Raina sitting inside.
’She actually cut her hair. The ends brushed against her chin, making her face look even smaller.’
Raina glanced at the damage; it wasn’t serious. Ethan Lancaster reached out to pull the car door open. "Get out." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
She hesitated before pushing the door open and getting out. Through the rear windshield of the car ahead, she could vaguely see Gwen Sharp sitting inside.
"Crashing on a road this wide? You did it on purpose, didn’t you?"
Raina pulled her jacket tighter, leaning against her car door. "I zoned out. I’m sorry."
"That’s a great excuse."
Raina reached to open her door, wanting to get back in the car.
Ethan Lancaster blocked her with his arm. "You rear-ended me. You’re fully at fault. Go ahead, call the police."
Raina’s lips were pale. She glanced at Ethan Lancaster’s car. A minor scrape like this was no trouble for him at all. She really didn’t have the strength to endure this.
Raina’s lips trembled, and her voice softened considerably. "Can we just let it go?"
"What do you mean, ’let it go’? So I just got hit for nothing, is that it?"
It would take time for the traffic police and the insurance company to arrive, and then they’d have to determine fault and assess the damages. Until then, Raina would definitely be stuck here. Her legs felt weak, she could barely stand, and every breath she exhaled was scorching hot.
"Ethan Lancaster, I’m not feeling well. Can we just forget about the car?"
Ethan Lancaster stared at her face. She really did look unwell, but he knew who she had become like this for.
’She’s probably still wallowing in grief over Miles Hawthorne’s death, unable to move on. That’s why she’s let herself get into this pathetic state.’
"Of course we can’t just let it go. Otherwise, what’s the point of having insurance?"
The last thing Raina wanted right now was a fever. She pulled the hood of her jacket over her head. Ethan Lancaster watched her with cold eyes. ’She’s certainly mastered the art of playing the victim.’
She pressed a hand against the car window, shivering in the cold wind. Lately, Raina had been wearing loose clothes and pants because she was losing weight rapidly—so much so that she herself could barely stand to look at it.
"Ethan Lancaster, you’re not hurting for the money."
"Whether I’m hurting for the money or not is my business. I don’t think this is much trouble, either. If you don’t want to call the police, you can pay for it out of your own pocket."
Raina’s fingers pressed against the cold, hard glass of the car window, and a wave of despair washed over her.
’How foolish I was. I refused the money Ethan Lancaster offered me. It’s not a pleasant thought, but among all his women, I, his actual wife, am probably the one with the most miserable life, aren’t I?’
Seeing her pale face and her silence, Ethan Lancaster added, "I forgot to tell you, I canceled the card I gave you. Not that you care, anyway."
Disbelief flashed in Raina’s eyes, but only for a moment. Her heart ached. "Fine."
