Chapter 167: Chapter 167 - Emp attack

The chopper hummed through the sky, slicing through the thick air of death and decay. Below them, the city was a nightmare made real. Once-bustling streets were now choked with overturned cars, bodies, and fires that cast eerie shadows against crumbling buildings. People—no, not people anymore—staggered through the streets, their eyes pools of blood, their jaws snapping mindlessly as they hunted for the living.

As the helicopter passed overhead, the infected turned their faces upward, their grotesque expressions twisted in hunger. Their hands, some broken and bent at unnatural angles, reached for the sky, as if they could pluck the aircraft from above with sheer desperation.

The soldier manning the machine gun tensed, his fingers twitching over the trigger. "Goddamn..." he whispered, his voice tight with horror. "I used to think the commander was just getting paranoid when he moved us and our families to that village... I even joked that he was losing his mind." He swallowed hard. "But if he hadn’t done that—" He turned to his teammate, his eyes wide with the dawning realization of how close they had come to sharing the same fate as those monsters below. "We’d be dead. Or worse."

Another soldier, sitting beside him, shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah, but explain this to me—how the hell did Team Lion’s men turn? They never even set foot in the city. They were supposed to be on standby. So how...?"

Silence fell for a moment before another voice, hushed and uneasy, whispered, "Maybe they got bit and hid it?"

The team leader, a battle-hardened man with sharp eyes, shook his head. "No. They weren’t infected from bites." His voice was steady, his certainty absolute.

The others turned to him, waiting for an explanation.

The leader exhaled, his grip tightening around his weapon. "They were all druggies."

A heavy silence followed his words.

He continued, his voice edged with quiet anger. "That entire team used to take drugs in secret. The commander didn’t know about it, but I did. I tried to warn them. I told them they were weakening themselves, that one day, it’d cost them. But they laughed it off, called me a self-righteous bastard." His jaw clenched as he checked his gun’s magazine. "I guess whatever the hell this infection is, it got to them faster because of it."

One of the younger soldiers shifted uncomfortably. "Shit... you think that means anyone with a weak immune system is at risk?"

The leader gave him a hard look. "You think I have an answer to that?" He turned back to the city below, watching the chaos unfold beneath them. "We don’t have time to find out. We get in, grab the commander’s kid, and get the hell out before we’re swarmed."

The moment the call ended, Jai felt lighter. Rescue was coming. They were going home.

"Yes!" Hana jumped up, spinning in circles like a little kid, her hair flying around her face. "We’re getting out of this hellhole!"

Yunfeng rolled his eyes. "So immature." But despite his words, a rare smile tugged at his lips. The relief was contagious.

"Alright, everyone," Jai clapped his hands, "we need to get to the roof."

As they gathered their things, Jiang Hao, the school kid, hesitated. His fists clenched before he finally looked up. "My mother... She’s still in the city. Can we go get her too?"

Yunfeng stiffened. Damn it.

"I don’t know about that," he admitted honestly. "You’ll have to ask the soldiers when they get here."

Jiang Hao’s face twisted, a shadow of frustration flickering across his young features before he lowered his head, masking his emotions.

Yunfeng chose not to press further. There was no way they could go searching for one person in this chaos. But he couldn’t say that to the kid’s face.

Instead, they focused on packing up whatever they could take. Weapons, food, anything useful from the warehouse. Muchen looked up at the ceiling, frowning. "How do we get to the roof?"

Jai scanned the area and pointed. "This place is solar-powered. There has to be a maintenance access." He ran ahead, and sure enough, tucked in the back corner, he found a ladder leading up.

"Got it!" he called.

One by one, they climbed, emerging onto the wide rooftop. And there, in the distance, they saw it.

The chopper.

A glimmer of silver against the dark sky. It was coming straight for them. Salvation.

A mix of laughter and tears broke out among them.

Jai fumbled with his phone, dialing quickly. The moment his father picked up, he blurted out, "Dad! I see the chopper!! We’re going home soon! Please don’t hit me too much, okay? I love you sooo muchhhhhhh!!"

He laughed, his heart feeling lighter than it had in days. But the usual sarcastic remark from the other end never came.

Silence.

Jai frowned. "Dad?"

He looked down. His phone was black.

"What the—?" He swore he had enough charge.

"What’s that?!" Hana’s sudden scream made them all snap their heads up.

The chopper was spinning.

Not in a controlled turn. It was losing control.

Like a stringless kite, it twisted wildly in the sky, veering off-course.

And then—

It crashed.

A blinding explosion tore through the ground below. A ball of fire erupted, swallowing the wreckage. The shockwave slammed into them, forcing them to shield their faces.

For a moment, no one moved.

No one breathed.

Jai’s fingers dug into his dead phone. His mouth opened, but no words came out. His rescue—his father’s men—they were gone.

Then, a buzzing sound rumbled above them.

Louder. Deeper. Wrong.

Yunfeng’s head snapped up. A massive aircraft loomed above. Not one of theirs.

Too fast. Too low. Too close.

It streaked across the sky, losing altitude. Sparks exploded from its underbelly.

And then—

It crashed.

The earth beneath them shook violently, a deep roar splitting the air as the aircraft erupted into a monstrous explosion in the distance. Dust and smoke billowed into the sky, blotting out the light.

Jai felt his knees buckle.

They were stranded.

The world blurred around him. The buzzing in his ears wouldn’t stop.

"What...what just happened...?" he whispered.

Yunfeng’s voice, sharp and full of fury, cut through the silence.

"An EMP attack. Fuck!"
