Plotting with You: The Forensic Scientist in Ancient Times!-Chapter 268 - 267: No Lingering Illness
"Brother, why the rush? It’s already this time, why not chat with me a little longer and leave after dinner?" Pang Yuzhen looked at Pang Yutang, somewhat puzzled.
They were just discussing finding a good marriage arrangement for Zhu Ning. Zhu Cheng had something to attend to, and he could go by himself. After all, he didn’t say much earlier, so there was no need for Pang Yutang to leave just because Zhu Cheng did.
Pang Yuzhen had been feeling down for a while. Now that Zhu Cheng was at home, she managed to let Pang Yutang in. She wanted to take the opportunity to talk more with her family.
"Yes, if Yuzhen still has something to discuss, you both continue. I will just go out to handle some affairs," Zhu Cheng nodded, his face slightly unnatural.
"No, Ning’er’s marriage is crucial for both families. It’s not a matter that can be settled in a few words. Yuzhen is not feeling well; she should rest early," Pang Yutang had no intention of staying. He cupped his hands towards Zhu Cheng and said, "Brother-in-law, take care of your health and don’t overwork yourself."
"Rest assured, uncle," Zhu Ning, seeing Pang Yutang about to leave, seemed quite pleased, speaking more spiritedly than before, "I send replenishing goods to father every day, never slacking off!"
Pang Yutang didn’t respond and reminded Pang Yuzhen a few times to rest well before leaving Prince Shuo Mansion with the steward accompanying him.
"Father, mother, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back!" Zhu Ning seemed unwilling to stay any longer and quickly spoke to her parents once Pang Yutang departed.
"You... why are you always so busy these days? You never come to talk with me! I’m constantly worrying about your matters, yet you don’t seem to care at all," Pang Yuzhen, unaware that the two people behind Zhu Cheng were Zhu Yu and Lu Qing, thought they were alone and complained somewhat to Zhu Ning.
Zhu Ning lowered her eyes, staying silent, while Zhu Cheng, slightly impatient, waved his hand: "Go ahead, your mother can return to rest well."
Then, he turned to Zhu Yu behind him and said, "Go call the Divine Doctor for me. I need to go out and see the house of the deceased Weapon Supervisor, ask him to come with me; he might be useful."
Just as Zhu Ning’s smile appeared, it vanished again with Zhu Cheng’s words.
"Father, I want to go too," she blurted, seemingly without thinking.
"Nonsense!" Zhu Cheng glared fiercely, "Have I been too lenient with you?! Keep acting up and I’ll confine you!"
Pang Yuzhen had never seen Zhu Cheng so severely scold Zhu Ning before and was startled. She quickly pulled her daughter, fearing she might throw a tantrum.
After all, Zhu Ning’s request was quite outrageous.
"Ning’er, come, mother has back pain today, help me massage it!" She held Zhu Ning’s hand, pulling her away before she could say anything.
Zhu Cheng watched the mother and daughter leave, sighed deeply, his face shadowed.
Zhu Yu intended to call Yan Daoxin, but as he turned the corridor, he saw the waiting rune.
Apparently, the rune was not at ease and stayed there to assist.
Upon hearing that Yan Daoxin was needed, he immediately took over the task and ran to help call Yan Daoxin.
Meanwhile, Zhu Cheng had already ordered horses to be prepared. Seeing Yan Daoxin approach, he waved: "Divine Doctor, please! I wish to inquire something."
In front of Zhu Cheng and his people, Yan Daoxin always maintained a calm demeanor and nodded: "Please speak, Prince."
Zhu Cheng leaned in, lowering his voice: "I wonder if the Divine Doctor can concoct a medicine that doesn’t affect the body much but can confine my wife to bed, making it unsuitable for visitors."
I need to ensure she can’t receive guests or go out for a while."
Yan Daoxin’s eyes showed a hint of surprise, but he maintained his calm expression, unhurriedly nodding. It seemed he didn’t find Zhu Cheng’s request troublesome: "I can prepare a medicine that will cause a rash on the face, but is not contagious.
When the Prince deems it right, she can take an antidote, and the rash will disappear without a trace."
"Very good, very good!" Zhu Cheng nodded with some surprise, not expecting such a satisfactory remedy, or perhaps surprised at the Divine Doctor Yan’s skill and ability to agree so readily.
Settling the matter, the group mounted their horses and soon arrived at the gate of the Weapon Supervisor’s residence.
Zhu Cheng’s personal soldiers had received the news earlier and secured the area thoroughly, allowing entry but preventing exit.
Luckily, the residence was in a quiet location, so the commotion didn’t attract onlookers.
Zhu Cheng, with a grim face, dismounted and led Zhu Yu and others inside.
The residence was already crowded. The deceased Weapon Supervisor was named Jia Jun. Besides his elderly parents and his wife and children, he also had two younger brothers and an unmarried sister at home.
At the moment, aside from Jia Jun’s parents and sister who weren’t present, his wife, two children, and two brothers stood in the courtyard. Jia Jun’s wife, hugging the two half-grown children, cried with swollen eyes, while the children trembled, heads down, seemingly terrified.
Jia Jun’s two brothers seemed equally lost.
Clearly, as the head of the family, Jia Jun’s sudden death left the entire family without a backbone, only panic remaining.
Seeing Zhu Cheng arrive, Jia Jun’s wife knelt with a thud: "Prince! I beg the Prince to seek justice for my husband!"
Her kneeling prompted Jia Jun’s brothers beside her to quickly join her, kneeling to the ground.
"What happened? Speak up," Zhu Cheng demanded, his expression stern, waving for them to rise, "Why would a fine person suddenly seek an end?"
"Reporting to the Prince, I recently took the two children to visit my parents, returned today, and heard from the servants that my husband was entertaining guests in the study. Thinking it inappropriate to disturb, I waited, only to see Chief Historian Zuo leave alone.
Thinking the guest had left, I went to the study, intending to share stories from my parents’ house, only to find...only to find..."
Jia Jun’s wife trembled, her lips quivering almost unable to open. She forced herself to continue: "Only to find my husband hanging on the beam... motionless..."
