Plotting with You: The Forensic Scientist in Ancient Times!-Chapter 255 - 254: The Blade Has a Problem
After eating, the two chatted for a while. Yan Shu had always lived in Jie Country, and was curious about everything outside of it. Listening to Zhu Yu talk about the customs of Shuo Country, she found it all very interesting and listened intently.
On the other hand, when Yan Shu talked about her life in Jie Country, how she learned to ride and shoot arrows under her father’s guidance, how she galloped with her brothers, went hunting outside, and caught beautiful foxes to make hats for her parents, Zhu Yu found it particularly interesting as well.
Especially the unrestrained indulgence of the Jie King couple towards their daughter deeply moved Zhu Yu.
It’s unclear how long they talked, but there came a few knocks from outside, and the voice of the rune came from outside: "Madam, my lord asked me to invite you over.
Your father has agreed to open the storehouse to inspect that batch of weapons, and my lord said you would definitely want to take a look as well."
Of course, Zhu Yu wanted to, but she couldn’t take Yan Shu, this outsider, with her. She just had a pleasant conversation with Yan Shu and felt a bit awkward to leave immediately.
Seeing her hesitation, Yan Shu quickly waved her hand: "Go on, go! My dog brain isn’t quite working anyway. I’ll just take a nap for a bit, and when I wake up, I’ll think about what other fun things I haven’t told you about. We’ll chat later!"
Zhu Yu smiled and nodded at her, helped the still limping Yan Shu to the bed to rest, so she wouldn’t have to hop around inconveniently, and then left the room, closing the door from the outside, and went with the rune to find Lu Qing.
The weapons that needed to be inspected were all stored in the Weapon Supervision. Lu Qing was already waiting in the backyard with two horses, and when he saw Zhu Yu and the rune approaching, his expression betrayed a great mood, indicated by the slight curve of his lips.
"Had a good chat with Princess Yan Shu?" he asked after Zhu Yu approached.
"Yes, I’ve gained a new friend," Zhu Yu nodded and couldn’t help but sigh, "It’s a pity, though, she’s Lu Zhang’s wife, so how long we can be friends probably depends on how long she needs to heal her injuries!"
"No need to be so pessimistic," Lu Qing gently patted her on the back of her head, "Having one more friend is much better than having one more enemy."
Zhu Yu felt a mix of tears and laughter at Lu Qing’s comforting gesture, not knowing whether he considered her a child or a little pet. Yet, on second thought, he probably didn’t have much experience being comforted by others in his life...
With this in mind, she swallowed back the words that were about to come out of her mouth.
The two, accompanied by the talisman, set off together. Yan Daoxin was not interested in weapons at all and didn’t really want to go, but thinking about Zhu Ning, who often peeked around Li Garden at the Prince Shuo Mansion, he felt a headache and immediately expressed his wish to go along and have a look.
So, after some consideration, Lu Qing left the rune behind to handle any potential situation involving Yan Shu, and the three of them set off with the talisman to the Weapon Supervision.
The talisman was visibly in a great mood.
Lately, he had been the one left behind to guard Li Garden, almost driving him crazy with boredom. Now it was finally his brother’s turn to stay behind, and he got to go out. No wonder he was so happy.
The four of them rode directly to the Weapon Supervision. Zhu Yu had been wearing a Taoist robe these days, so for this outing, she merely added a veiled hat.
Upon reaching the Weapon Supervision, Zhu Cheng’s personal guard was waiting at the entrance for them. Seeing them arrive, he stepped forward, saluted, and led them in to find Zhu Cheng.
Zhu Cheng had only arrived a bit earlier than they did. The batch of weapons, prepared to be transported to Jin Country soon, was neatly stacked in the storeroom with seals affixed to each box.
Seeing Lu Qing, Zhu Cheng nodded at him. Then he saw Zhu Yu behind Lu Qing and was slightly surprised. He glanced at Lu Qing, who remained calm, and said nothing, merely looking away.
Deep down, he was somewhat resistant to women entering the Weapon Supervision and inspecting weapons, tasks traditionally reserved for men.
But since his daughter was already married and his son-in-law didn’t mind, even indulged her in doing these things, Zhu Cheng wisely kept silent.
Nevertheless, his gaze paused on Zhu Yu’s wristband before he glanced at her again.
"Come, dear son-in-law." Zhu Cheng waited until the guards closed the storeroom doors, ensuring no outsiders were present, before speaking to Lu Qing, "You were concerned about this batch of weapons and wanted to inspect them yourself, right? Everything is here, inspect as you wish."
One could detect a slight dissatisfaction in his tone, still somewhat mindful of Lu Qing’s interference in Shuo’s internal affairs, though restrained by manners from expressing it too bluntly.
Lu Qing seemed oblivious to Zhu Cheng’s sentiment, nodding, drawing his sword, and slicing cleanly through the seal on a nearby box.
The talisman quickly stepped up, opened the box, took out a blade, and handed it respectfully to Lu Qing.
Lu Qing took it in his hand, weighed it, frowned, and drew the blade from its sheath.
The blade gleamed silver and was eye-catching; it looked sharp and seemed like a good weapon.
Yet, Lu Qing’s expression remained unchanged. He tossed the sheath aside, weighed the blade again, and his frown deepened.
"There’s something wrong with this blade." He felt the blade, tapped it, listened carefully, then told Zhu Cheng, "It wasn’t forged but cast in a mold, and then ground to give it an edge."
Initially, Zhu Cheng was quite satisfied with how sharp and beautiful the blade Lu Qing drew appeared. Hearing this, however, he was taken aback, hastily taking the blade from Lu Qing to check it himself.
"The dimensions and weight of this blade feel wrong," Lu Qing shook his head, "Apart from not being forged, it’s likely infused with other materials, affecting its durability and even its hardness."
"This..." Zhu Cheng was visibly surprised, tapping the blade and indeed finding the sound somewhat off. However, he noticed nothing unusual in its weight, leaving him both skeptical and astonished at Lu Qing’s keen judgment.
"If father-in-law doesn’t believe me, why not test it yourself?" Lu Qing pointed aside, confidently suggesting to Zhu Cheng.
