Please Let Me Go, My Contracted Ex-Husband.-Chapter 271- You’re lying
On the way home, as Albert was driving Cynthia, she felt something was off. After a while, she turned around and looked at him. Sure enough, she saw him with a cold expression, silently driving without saying a word.
"Are you angry?"
She tilted her head, looking at his stiff side profile, and quietly asked. He responded with a cold grunt from his nose, and she immediately understood.
If he hadn’t picked her up from the back door of the TV station today, she would have probably been pelted with eggs at the front door. He was angry because she didn’t listen to him and quit her job to go back to being a doctor. If she had, she wouldn’t have been hurt like this.
But she couldn’t help it. Not long ago, her brother had a huge fight with Bonnie, and her brother even stopped coming to the mainland for a while. How could she just leave the TV station and Bonnie behind like that?
But she understood he was doing this for her own good, that he felt like she was being stubborn and not listening to him. So, she reached out and tugged on his sleeve, speaking softly,
"I’m sorry..."
Since they reconciled, he had never given her the cold shoulder. Most of the time, she was the one who acted bossy towards him. Of course, she wasn’t the type to be willfully temperamental; even when they had small arguments, he would always be the one to come and appease her.
So, this time, as she finally showed some weakness, his expression softened slightly. But he still remained distant, coldly scoffing.
"Wow, you can apologize? That’s really rare!"
When he said this, he didn’t even glance at her. Even though he was driving, he could have at least looked at her with his peripheral vision, but he didn’t. Instead, his attitude seemed to grow more arrogant with every passing moment.
Seeing his sarcastic expression, Cynthia couldn’t help but think in frustration that he was probably using this opportunity to make up for all the grievances he had suffered before. With that thought, she decided not to appease him anymore. She turned her head and looked out the window, ignoring him completely.
Let him be, she was already fed up with the situation at the TV station and didn’t want to deal with his childish behavior. She knew this man—always acting all innocent after taking advantage. If she had known, she wouldn’t have apologized to him earlier.
Meanwhile, Albert was waiting for her to say a few more comforting words to ease the frustration in his heart. But to his surprise, she turned away and faced the window, leaving him furious.
He was still seething with anger, remembering the scene outside the TV station when Bonnie and James were surrounded by a crowd. Then, thinking about how Cynthia could have ended up in the same situation, his heart clenched painfully, as if someone had tightly twisted and squeezed it, making it hard to breathe.
When he took Bonnie to the hospital, he couldn’t bear to think about the consequences anymore. He even thought that if it had been Cynthia lying in that hospital bed, he definitely wouldn’t have remained calm like James. He would have stormed straight to those corrupt officials and destroyed them.
But at that moment, everyone was focused on Bonnie, and no one noticed his trembling, not even her. When he helped her sit down in the hospital and stepped outside to make a phone call, he ordered someone to deal with the corrupt officials and then hid outside to smoke several cigarettes to calm the panic in his heart.
She was the one he had waited for all these years. He couldn’t bear to see her suffer even the slightest bit of hurt or injustice. He wanted her to live every day in happiness and peace, and he wanted her to be safe and sound, every single day.
It wasn’t really that he was angry with her; he just hoped she would say a few kind words to calm his restless heart. But at the same time, he was frustrated with her for not quitting her job and returning to a more stable life as a doctor.
In short, he didn’t even know what was going on with him. His emotions were tangled, and he felt uneasy. And yet, when she acted this way toward him, it only made him feel more suffocated.
So, with her not speaking to him, he didn’t have the courage to apologize either. They ended up in an awkward silence all the way home. When they arrived, Fredy was already waiting for them with Olive for dinner. As soon as they saw Olive, both of them subconsciously softened their expressions. Albert even smiled and picked up their little princess, twirling her around before planting several kisses on her.
"My dear little princess, are you starving?"
Olive giggled, laughing as she wrapped her arms around his neck and puckered her lips to kiss him.
"Daddy, I’m not hungry. I’m waiting to eat with you and Mommy..."
Her soft, childish voice made Cynthia smile gently as well. But no matter how much they tried to act normal, little Olive was far too sharp and intelligent to miss the tension. By the time dinner was almost over, with the two of them still having barely spoken to each other, Olive could tell this was unusual. This had never happened before in her memory.
Unable to hold back any longer, the little princess set down her bowl and, with her big dark eyes, seriously asked them,
"Daddy, did you and Mommy have a fight?"
A hint of awkwardness flashed across Albert’s handsome face. After glancing at the equally embarrassed Cynthia, he reached over and pulled her closer, trying to appear affectionate, then smiled and said to Olive,
"Of course not!"
Olive, with her large, moist eyes, looked uncertainly at Cynthia, who, with no choice but to lie, forced a smile and said,
"Heh, no, we didn’t fight. What would we fight about..."
The little princess was not so easily fooled. She continued to stare at them with wide, unblinking eyes, looking up at them with a hurt expression as she asked,
"Then why aren’t you talking?"
Albert was at a loss for words.
"Uh... we’re just a bit tired from work today, so... we don’t have the energy to talk."
"Wow—"
Before he could finish, the little princess puckered her lips and began to cry loudly.
"You’re lying! You’re lying! You must have had a fight! You’ve never been like this, not talking to each other—"
