Playing inventor in a cultivation world-Chapter 20: Midnight War
The screams of her men snapped Matriarch Suho back to reality. The first line of attack had fallen, with over ten warriors killed in an instant.
Enraged, she immediately created a huge fireball, throwing it straight at the Moonveil Clan. The darkness of the night retreated temporarily, allowing the fireball to illuminate the ground like a sun.
Before the attack could reach the walls though, an equally large and dense waterball was shot from within the wall.
The two attacks met midair, canceling out each other and only releasing a large amount of steam and some hot drops of water.
’The position of their archers have been exposed by my attack. Now, my men will kill them.’
Just as she thought, the Suho Clan warriors had spotted the Moonveil archers on the wall and began firing their own set of arrows. Although the steamy fog somewhat obscured their views, they still targeted the exact spots that the Moonveil archers were standing.
When the fog cleared, they were surprised to see that the wall had seemingly grown taller.
’Damnit! They’re using the earth walls to protect their archers.’
Matriarch Suho ground her teeth, incensed.
She immediately commanded her warriors to protect themselves while approaching the walls.
"Although they’ve stalled us for some time, we’ll eventually close the distance."
Snorting, she followed her warriors. However, another tragedy befell them the moment they got very close to the walls. A chain of explosions erupted from the ground, consuming the first line of attackers. Several men died, while others were injured heavily.
Matriarch Suho’s eyes blazed with anger. "What the hell are those?!"
Her cry was filled with anger and sorrow for her losses.
She immediately changed tactics, calling her warriors back and letting her own archers shoot into the ground before them.
Explosions rippled loudly wherever the arrows struck, proving that there were more traps ahead.
’Cunning bastards!’
Seething inwardly, Matriarch Suho forced herself to calm. By letting the archer’s destroy the traps ahead of time, her warriors eventually arrived at the front wall of the Moonveil Clan.
They began scaling up the walls, using different wind and earth skills. The Moonveil warriors appeared on the walls again, shooting them down or throwing javelins and spears at them.
Some were skewered, while the others maneuvered their ways and made it to the top of the walls.
There, the real melee combat began.
The valiant cries of warriors echoed in the night as swords clashed and blades pierced into flesh.
Matriarch Suho stood some distance away, a victorious smile on her lips. Although she had lost some men, the five-ci-aptitude boy was enough compensation.
Suddenly, her pupils dilated. "What...?"
Her men were dying faster, and couldn’t seem to resist the Moonveil warriors.
.........
The Ban Clan warriors attacked from the west, expecting to break through the western walls easily and corner the Moonveil warriors.
However, they fell into a trap when they got close.
Different from the explosive traps that the Suho Clan had faced, they faced a terrain disadvantage.
The ground suddenly turned murky beneath their feet, and then hardened again, locking them in place. While they tried to break through, a few Moonveil archers appeared on the western wall. The archer’s were small in number, but very fast.
They struck the immobilized Ban Clan warriors, killing several in just a few minutes.
Patriarch Tun Ban grimaced, forcefully pulling himself out of the ground. Deciding to personally intervene, he melted the solid ground just enough for his men to escape.
"Be careful. Don’t just run ahead. Test the ground before moving."
Giving orders, he raised his axe and propelled himself straight at the walls using the wind element.
As he zoomed in with powerful force, ready to demolish the wall with a powerful swing, someone dropped from the wall and blocked him.
’What?! A fellow Master Stage cultivator?!’
He was forced to halt, staring at the person before him. Unlike what he expected, it wasn’t the Patriarch of the Moonveil Clan.
Instead, it was Elder Cassius.
"You..." Patriarch Tun recognized him, shocked. The last time they had met, Elder Cassius was only a Peak Advanced Stage cultivator.
’So he had made a breakthrough and kept it hidden from other clans. This is bad.’
If Elder Cassius could stall him here, then it meant only the Scota Clan warriors could support the Suho Clan in completely defeating the Moonveil Patriarch and the main forces of the clan.
’Fine. I will tie you down here.’
Raising his axe again, he clashed with Elder Cassius’s sword.
.........
Unlike what Patriarch Tun expected, the eastern wall of the Moonveil Clan was silent. It was eerily silent.
When the Scota Clan warriors got there, they faced no resistance and immediately scaled up the wall.
That was when the first tragedy happened. A warrior suddenly stumbled, clutching his chest as he fell to the ground. In a few seconds, he was dead.
Another one who tried to check on him was shot in the head, the tiny arrow drilling into his brain and killing him.
’Tiny arrows with this much force?! Impossible!’
Patriarch Nevak stared in disbelief as his men fell one after the other.
"Take cover! There are hidden archers!"
He immediately issued a warning, creating a wall of water before him to protect himself. The other warriors either created earth walls and water walls, or his behind solid materials.
Patriarch Nevak nodded, narrowing his gaze as he tried to determine the source of the attacks.
His ears perked, picking up a whistling sound. His senses screamed, and he immediately shifted to the side. The thick, tiny arrow broke through his shield and drilled into his arm, narrowly missing his heart.
Patriarch Nevak was immediately covered in cold sweat, his expression pale. The attack hurt, and he could feel his muscles shredded. The arrow was still stuck inside too.
’Over there!’
His eyes narrowed on a tall building in the distance. Although it was already late in the night, the moon allowed him to see a bit.
In the attic of a random building, Seraph reloaded his sniper rifle, ready to target another Scota Clan warrior.
On his face was a delighted smile as he killed the warriors one by one.
