Chapter 101: PRS 4 Liona

In the middle of the night, Larti, seeing her husband sound asleep, snoring loudly, crept out of the house. Each step was carefully timed to avoid making a sound.

"Hopefully he won’t wake up," she whispered softly, occasionally glancing back to make sure her husband was still sleeping soundly.

Larti quickly put on a sarong over her head, covering her entire face, leaving only her eyes to see in the darkness. Her hands trembled slightly as she tied the sarong.

"Okay, I’m ready. This is for the one million rupiah," she muttered, taking a deep breath.

With a flashlight in hand, the middle-aged woman walked through the darkness. The sounds of crickets and nocturnal animals frightened Larti slightly. Her heart pounded every time she heard a strange noise.

"Oh God, why does this night feel so eerie?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

But when she remembered the one million rupiah she would soon receive, that fear vanished and was replaced by a desire to complete her mission.

"One million... with that much money, I can buy a lot of things," she thought to herself as she quickened her pace.

Even though it was only eight houses away from her home, considering that each house had a spacious yard, Larti still had quite a long way to walk to where her second sister lived.

"It’s still so far... why do the houses in this village have such spacious yards?" she grumbled as she continued walking anxiously.

Every few steps, she paused to listen for anyone following her. The silence of the night made every sound especially clear and eerie.

After walking for about ten minutes, Larti arrived at a house with bamboo walls. It was very dark, with only one oil lamp lit inside: one in the husband and wife’s bedroom and the other in the earthen cage where Liona’s placenta was buried next to the back door.

"This is the house," Larti whispered, hiding behind a tree. "Looks like they’re all asleep."

Larti walked around to observe her younger sibling’s house before deciding which way to enter. Her eyes scanned every corner carefully.

"The front door must be locked... the windows are also tightly shut..." she muttered as she continued to observe. "Which way is the safest?"

Seeing that the back door was the safest option, Larti slowly walked back across the field to Laus’s back door.

"The back door will be easier," she thought to herself with a calculating smile. "I’ll grab the baby quickly and leave."

The back porch was plastered with cement because it was directly connected to the well and bathroom stall.

Larti had just stepped onto the porch when she suddenly slipped and fell hard, instantly shattering her spine.

"ARRRGHHHH!" she screamed, her eyes nearly popping out of her head in pain.

Not wanting to wake Laus and her family, Larti could only bite the sarong she was wearing tightly to soothe the pain. Tears welled up in her eyes as she endured the excruciating pain.

"Damn... damn... why is it so slippery!" she muttered, wincing in pain. "Ouch... my back... feels like it’s going to break..."

Laus, who had keen hearing, immediately stood up when he heard the loud sound of something falling behind the house. His eyes snapped open.

"What’s that?" he whispered to Lura, who had also woken up.

"I don’t know, sir. It looks like something fell," Lura replied worriedly, hugging Liona tighter.

To confirm what it was, Laus quickly grabbed a candle from the drawer and lit it for light. Then, he stepped out of the room toward the back door, just as Liona’s heart suddenly pounded.

"That evil woman has arrived!" Liona’s voice rang in everyone’s heads. "But unfortunately, she fell into a trap my brother set at the back door and fell hard into the pool of soapy water!"

"Thank God, Leo and Lan’s trap worked!" Laus muttered to himself with a faint smile.

Fortunately, Laus listened to his daughter’s conscience and avoided the same accident as Larti. He only partially opened the back door, the top section, leaving the bottom section closed, and held his candle out to peer into the darkness.

"Who’s there?!" he shouted loudly and fiercely. "Come out! Don’t hide!"

Larti was currently crouching by the well after hearing the sound of the back door opening. Her breath was ragged, her body trembling with fear.

"Oh my God, he’s awake! What’s going on?" she whispered frantically, trying her best to remain invisible.

"That evil woman is doomed," Liona’s inner voice echoed. "Tonight, my father and mother can rest easy because there are still many traps behind the house ready to welcome that woman, who will suffer many losses tonight! She won’t succeed in kidnapping me!"

Hearing that his eldest sister couldn’t get into the house and would actually suffer many losses, Laus immediately closed the back door and propped it up with a table as a precaution in case Liona’s prediction was wrong and Larti still insisted on going inside.

"It seems there really is something fishy," Laus whispered to Lura, carefully moving the table. "But our children’s traps are enough to handle it."

"I hope Liona is right, Dad. I’m scared..." Lura said, gently stroking Liona’s head.

Hearing the door close and footsteps walking away, Larti struggled to get up, holding her aching waist.

"Ouch... ouch... I feel like my waist is going to break..." she groaned softly as she struggled to stand. "But I’ve already come this far, I can’t give up!"

She had only taken five steps when her right foot suddenly fell into a hole Lan had deliberately dug, causing her to fall back into a sitting position, making her aching back even more intense.

"ARGGGHHH! DAMN IT!" she screamed, unable to hold it in any longer. "WHAT THE HELL! WHY IS THERE A HOLE HERE!"

Larti’s shrill scream made the corners of Laus and Lura’s lips twitch, as they tried to hold back laughter after realizing that the evil woman had fallen into yet another trap set by her three children.

"Pffttt... poor thing, Dad," Lura whispered, covering her mouth to hold back her laughter.

"It’s her own fault. Who told her to steal someone else’s baby?" Laus replied with a faint smile. "Our children are really good at setting traps."

The loud scream that Larti couldn’t hold back in surprise was only the prelude. The couple continued to hear screams of pain and curses all the way, until Laus’s eldest sister walked away from the house, her voice growing softer and softer, then disappearing without a trace.

"OH MY GOD! DAMN IT! I’VE BEEN PUNCHED AGAIN!" Larti’s voice rang out from afar.

"OH MY GOD! WHAT IS THIS! WHY IS IT SO SLIPPERY AGAIN!" she screamed again, her voice filled with anger and pain.

"Looks like she fell for all the traps Leo, Lan, and Lano set," Laus said, shaking his head. "Poor thing... but it was well deserved."

The couple smiled broadly, having gotten through this somewhat nerve-wracking night with ease.

Laus’s three children, who were in a separate room, also giggled under their pillows, afraid their laughter would be heard by their parents, who would surely come and scold them for staying up until midnight.

"Hehehehe... the trap worked!" Lan whispered to Leo, holding back laughter.

"Shhh... quietly! Dad will hear!" Leo warned, covering his little brother’s mouth.

Lano, in the next room, also smiled with satisfaction. "Experience my revenge, you wicked aunt!" he muttered to himself, clenching his small fists proudly.

Larti, who had just emerged from hell, limped along, continuing to curse her second brother’s family, who seemed to have deliberately caused her suffering tonight.

"Damn you, Laus! Damn you! You must have set a trap!" she cursed, continuing to stagger. "Watch out if you see me again!"

She had no idea that her second brother’s house would be so full of hidden traps waiting for uninvited guests at night.

"Why are there traps in someone’s house? What kind of house is this dangerous forest!" she grumbled, seething with anger.

Bug!

As soon as she turned the corner, Larti was hit by someone running frantically, sending her stumbling backward. Her body hit the ground hard again.

"OW! DAMN IT!" she screamed loudly, clutching her battered bottom.

"Hey! Don’t run! Come on, take responsibility!" she yelled angrily as she tried to get up. "Are you blind?! Look where you’re going!"

The man, who had covered his entire head with a sarong, ignored the woman’s screams, just like Larti, and continued running as if being chased by a ghost. His steps quickly disappeared into the darkness.

"YOU’RE IRRESPONSIBLE!" Larti shouted hoarsely.

Grumbling, Larti struggled to get up, her waist and bottom already injured by the Batman trap set in Laus’s house. She stood with a grimace, holding her entire body in pain.

"Ouch... ouch... it hurts..." she groaned as she struggled to stand. "I feel like my whole body is going to fall apart..."

"F*ck! I’m so unlucky tonight!" she cursed angrily, wiping away tears that had fallen from the pain. "Why can’t everything go according to plan today!"

Bad luck seemed to continue to haunt Larti’s steps that night. After struggling to get up and walking again, she had only taken a few steps when suddenly a group of residents came and beat her indiscriminately.

"CATCH HIM! THAT’S THE THIEF!" shouted one resident.

"DON’T LET HIM ESCAPE!" shouted another.

"HIT! HIT!" came angry voices from the crowd.

"OWHH! IT HURTS! LET ME GO!" Larti screamed in terror. "YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG PERSON! I’M NOT A THIEF!"

"SHUT UP! WHERE THERE’S A THIEF, SCREAMING THIEF!" shouted one resident, continuing to beat her.

Larti’s screams and wails of pain didn’t stop anyone, and the woman fainted, unable to withstand the onslaught of pain.

"She’s fainted!" said one villager.

"Take her to the village hall! We’ll try her there!" ordered another.

Seeing the man they suspected of stealing the Bombom family’s money lying helpless, instead of showing compassion, the villagers immediately dragged her to the village hall to be tried.

Several residents of houses passing by were awakened by the noise and peeked outside to see what was happening.

"What’s all the noise?" asked a woman, peering through the window.

"It looks like a thief has been caught," replied her neighbor, also peeking. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Seeing that a group of villagers had apparently just caught a thief who was being paraded to the village hall, they returned to their rooms to rest, as they had many activities to do the next day.

"Okay, okay. Come back inside. Tomorrow morning we’ll find out who the thief is," said the head of the family, closing the window.

Larti, who had just been thrown onto the cold cement floor in the village hall, regained consciousness and clutched her head in a daze.

"Ouch... my head... where am I?" she muttered as she struggled to open her eyes.

In the village hall, the lighting was better, allowing her to clearly see the faces of the people who had beaten her.

"You guys!" she shouted, pointing angrily. "All of you! How dare you hit me! I demand compensation!" Larti said, pointing her index finger at everyone with a fierce glare. "I’m going to report you all to the police!"

She momentarily forgot the pain in her body as the anger in her heart grew stronger.

Everyone was shocked, not expecting the thief they had caught to be a woman, especially the 40-year-old mustachioed man named Ain.

"Wait... this voice..." Ain muttered, his face pale. "I think I know that voice..."

Not wanting to guess, Ain quickly stepped forward and quickly removed the sarong covering Larti’s head.

"Mother!" he shouted in shock when he saw that it was his wife, Larti, whom he and the villagers had captured. "Oh my God! This is my wife!"

"WELL! What a wonderful husband! You beat your own wife!" Larti shouted in a rage.

SLAP!

Larti immediately got up and slapped her husband hard across the face after realizing that Tain was one of the villagers who had beaten her.

"TASTE THAT! YOU USELESS HUSBAND!" she shouted, crying hysterically.

Ain, who had high self-esteem, was naturally furious to be slapped and humiliated like that by his wife in public. His face turned bright red.

"YOU DARE SLAP ME IN FRONT OF A HUNDRED?!" he shouted in a thunderous voice.

SLAP! SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!

Ain slapped and hit Larti several times, brutally, until several bystanders tried to break them up.

"Enough! Enough! Don’t hit me again!" shouted one of the bystanders, holding Ain’s hands.

"Your poor wife! She’s already battered!" said another.

"You barbaric husband! How could you beat your wife like this!" Larti shouted, tears streaming down her face, her eyes reddening from the pain she had been enduring. "You’re not a man! You’re a coward!"

"You! You disobedient wife!" Ain shouted back fiercely, pointing at his wife. "Did I not give you enough money to make you a thief? If I had known you were going to steal, I should have broken your legs when you sneaked out of the house to save me the embarrassment!"

"I’M NOT A THIEF!" Larti shouted defensively. "I DIDN’T STEAL ANYTHING!"

"THEN WHY ARE YOU OUT AT NIGHT WITH YOUR FACE COVERED?!" Ain snapped loudly.

The husband and wife then began arguing, hurling insults and vulgarities at each other, leaving onlookers shaking their heads in concern.

"Gosh, how embarrassing..." one of the onlookers whispered.

"Yes, to the point of fighting in public like this..." another chimed in, shaking his head.

"Enough... enough... don’t take the law into your own hands," said Mr. Laksono, the village head, who had just arrived after being summoned by a resident to mediate and testify in the theft case that Bambang and his wife experienced tonight. "Let’s sit down and find a solution together. Let’s resolve this with cool heads."

"Village Head, please bring justice to my wife! She has brought shame to my family!" shouted Ain, pointing at Larti.

"Okay, okay. We’ll resolve it fairly," said Mr. Laksono, sitting in a chair and taking a deep breath, preparing to listen to the long story of this dramatic night.
