Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 167 Another Assassination Attempt (2)
The spiderlike robot nimbly turned around and the camera it used as an eye locked onto Ezra.
He had just caught Grito after Kaiden had tossed him out of the path of the mechanical assassin.
If Ezra had his hard light weapon on him as he normally did, he would have simply charged forward and turned this robot into scrap.
Yet, to comply with the Alliance Police’s request, he had also left his armaments on his ship and merely had a personal shield generator to protect himself.
’We came here because this place is supposed to be safe. A base on an island that is not connected to anything else and solely controlled by the Alliance Police. Something like this should not have been possible.’ Ezra thought, wondering how they had gotten into this dire situation.
He quickly glanced towards the Alliance Police members that had brought them to this place, but they seemed just as shocked by this development as everyone else. If they were involved in this plot, it was most likely unwittingly.
Fortunately, while Ezra and the rest of Avery’s team were currently unarmed, the same could not be said about the officers from Commander Berk’s squad that were escorting them.
Lieutenant Laletta was the first to shake off her shock and started barking orders while drawing her own weapon.
Laser quickly flew and it seemed that this attack would come to a swift end.
Except, as the blasts connected, a shimmering forcefield surround the robot and protected it.
To make it onto this base, the spiderlike assassin drone had been disguised as a spare shield generator and had the proper equipment installed to look the part. Blasts from standard laser pistols were not going to break through its defenses any time soon.
Ezra barely managed to avoid himself and Grito being skewered by the thing as it skittered by.
At the last moment, he had jumped to the side and kicked away the blade stabbing towards him with the thick sole of his combat boots.
’It doesn’t have any long-range weapons, but it’s fast and strong. Its shield is also a problem. Nobody’s weapons are getting through. If we can hold out for just a couple of minutes, I’m sure refoments will arrive and take it out.’ Ezra thought as he did his best to keep Grito safe.
As he had correctly surmised, the spiderlike robot was not equipped with any weapons that could fire projects.
Had it come with lasers, electromagnetic, or even powder-propelled guns, the scans that all cargo entering the base went through would have caught it.
This left the mechanical assassin’s only weapons to be its mass and bladed legs that were merely sharpened metal.
In terms of a threat to the base, it hardly constituted one. No matter how strong its shield was, a few powerful attacks would bring it down without any issue.
However, all it needed to do was kill a single Baccigan before being destroyed. With the ambush that had been set up being successful, it had already nearly completed its mission. So long as Grito died, it would not matter if the spiderlike robot was swiftly destroyed afterwards.
’Damn it.’
Ezra avoided another barrage of strikes while Grito clung to his back.
However, the robot was getting more used to his movements and had started to hit him.
Right now, they were only small scratches that were not worth mentioning, but a single mistake could see him suffering a fatal wound.
’I don’t know if I can do that, but I’d rather give it a try than wait to die.’ Ezra thought, his frustration and rage at the situation building.
He then told Grito to jump off of him and run towards Oliva when the spiderlike assassin drone attacked again. He had come up with a plan, albeit a risky one. Should he fail, it would likely mean his death.
Despite being hesitant to leave since he figured being with Ezra would be the safest move, Grito still jumped away when the mechanical beast attacked.
Four of its bladed arms swung at different trajectories to make it difficult to dodge.
The robot had calculated the methods in which Ezra had already evaded its blow and left no opening to do so again. If he wanted to avoid this attack, he would have to do so in a completely different way from before.
Except, Ezra only focused on dodging two of the strikes. As for the others, they were set to strike him in his head and chest.
"Gotcha!"
Right before he was impaled, Ezra reached out and grabbed the bladed arms that were a mere instant away from delivering two deadly blows.
Hit felt his flesh being sliced by the sharpened edges, but he did not let go even as he was assaulted by immense pain and his hands became slippery with his own blood.
It had been a gamble whether his own strength would exceed that of this spiderlike robot. Thankfully the risk had paid off.
Ezra’s muscles bulged as adrenaline pumped through his body and he summoned ever ounce of strength he had in him.
This robot was certainly larger and heavier than him, but thanks to the inherent physical abilities of his species and the bionic enhancements he had received, Ezra picked the mechanical killer up into the air and swung it around,
Soon the force became too much for the joints in its legs to handle and they snapped off.
The four-meter-tall robot went flying through the air and crashed into the same building it had originally burst out of.
Everyone stood there gawking at the feat of sheer strength they had just witnessed.
Ezra was a large guy to be sure, but no one present had expected him to be capable of something like this.
Still, the battle was not over yet, and the first to come to their senses was Lieutenant Laletta.
She swiftly ordered her subordinates to open fire again.
Its shield was powerful without a doubt, but a concentrated volley would chew through its energy reserves soon enough.
Of course, being mechanical in nature, the spiderlike robot felt no pain. After just a few moments as its system recalibrated its lessened movement ability from having lost two of its legs, the assassin drone sprung back up and locked onto Grito again. So long as it was still functioning, it would pursue him endlessly.
Yet its one-track mind proved to be the robot’s undoing.
It did not assess threats and only charged towards its target. To make sure that it would kill Grito, it had been programed to ignore anything else that was not directly impeding it.
Since Ezra was no long protecting Grito, the assassin drone turned all of its attention on the Baccigan it was designed to kill and Oliva who was shielding it.
This left it completely blindsided when Ezra jumped into from the side.
The robot quickly assessed this new threat and tried to stab Ezra, but he merely swatted the attack away.
Held in his left hand, Ezra brandished one of the spiderlike robot’s bladed arms he had ripped off and stabbed forward.
Caught off balance, the mechanical beast was unable to dodge out of the way, and one of its own weapons pierced through the central camera that it used as its eye.
Immediately errors began to occur in its processing ability.
Its central computer had just been run through by its own blade arm and its systems were unable to compensate for the damage.
After teetering around for a few seconds, the spiderlike robot fell over and went completely still.
"We managed to win." Ezra said as he exhaled deeply.
He had pushed himself hard to take out this assassin drone with only his bare hands and brute strength.
There were cuts all over him, and his hands were sliced all the way down to the bone despite the battle taking less than a minute.
Ezra could also feel that he had torn some of the muscles in his arms. He was strong, but not so much that he could wield the power he displayed without hurting himself.
Fortunately, his injuries were not too severe compared to other wounds he had incurred before.
As a mercenary, he had been shot and had his limbs crushed before. Just recently he had even been impaled by a hardlight spear. This was nothing compared to that. A quick rest in a medical pod would see him fixed up.
But, as everyone was celebrating their victory, the spiderlike robot began to shake.
At first, they thought that maybe its systems had rebooted, and it was going to get back up. However, what happened next was objectively far worse.
Four panels opened out of the side of the mechanical beast and smaller versions of it jumped out.
The Odium Syndicate wanted Grito dead at nearly any cost. So of course they had prepared contingencies in case the original robot was destroyed.
Now there were four smaller ones to deal with, and each of them opened up compartments on their own sides and released even smaller spider assassin drones. This process continued several times, and it was not long until there was a small swarm of them.
