Chapter 1884: Chapter 467: Marriage Certificate Turmoil (Part 3)

The man helplessly shook his head and glanced apologetically at An Yiqing, as if to say, "My wife isn’t very bright, please bear with her."

An Yiqing was speechless, her face full of black lines, her mouth twitching uncontrollably from this quirky, disruptive couple. Fortunately, Gu Yelin returned from buying water just then, and Xiao Bai didn’t feel comfortable asking further. However, during the subsequent wait, she frequently glanced at Gu Yelin out of the corner of her eye, as if she were looking at an alien.

Gu Yelin was utterly bewildered by the stares and looked at An Yiqing to inquire about what was happening, only to notice that his beloved’s ears were slightly red.

"Is it hot in the hall?" he asked, puzzled.

"No, it’s not hot." An Yiqing shook her head guiltily, trying to change the subject, "How many couples are ahead of us?"

"Just two more couples to go before it’s our turn."

An Yiqing felt a sense of joy; only two more couples, and then they could register.

After waiting for another two or three minutes, the couple ahead finished registering, Xiao Bai and her husband waved at An Yiqing and happily walked into the registration office.

"Once they’re done registering, it’ll be our turn."

Just as An Yiqing finished speaking, the doors of the marriage office suddenly swung open, and a group of people briskly walked in.

The entire group was dressed in black suits, looking like bodyguards. Among them, a man and a woman were surrounded in the middle, clearly the leaders of this group.

The man looked to be over forty, pot-bellied, with a mink coat that exuded the stench of nouveau riche. The woman in his arms looked no older than twenty-one or twenty-two, her face still showing hints of youth yet heavily made up, creating an incongruous appearance.

"Are they here to register too? That woman could practically be the man’s daughter!"

"Who knows? Maybe she climbed up from being a mistress!"

The people waiting in the hall whispered among themselves, discussing this conspicuous couple.

At this point, the man glanced around the hall, frowned, and then took out his cell phone to make a call. A short while later, a man in a black suit hurried down from the second floor, smiling as he approached upon seeing the man.

"Chairman Chen, hello, hello! Long time no see!"

The nouveau riche referred to as Chairman Chen looked down at the man, filled with disdain in his eyes.

"I’m here to register with my girlfriend today."

"Register?" The man in the black suit froze; wasn’t Chairman Chen already married?

Although this was a thought in his mind, he dared not ask. This Chen didn’t have much taste but had a powerful background. He had no family background himself but had once saved a prominent local figure’s life, who had connections higher up, so in Xuandu City, everyone must show Chairman Chen a little respect.

"Congratulations, Chairman Chen, congratulations! Mrs. Chen is truly beautiful as a flower, you’re so lucky, Chairman Chen!" The man smiled obsequiously, spewing flattery without reservation, causing everyone’s skin to crawl in the hall.

Chairman Chen felt somewhat proud; anyone would love hearing praise about their pretty wife, as it also demonstrated one’s prowess, didn’t it?

"Alright, alright, stop with the nonsense. I’m here to register today, clear the hall for me." He impatiently waved his hand, arrogantly glanced at the people sitting in the hall, and walked into the registration office, arm in arm with the woman in his embrace.

Suddenly, before anyone could react, Xiao Bai and her boyfriend, who had just been inside for less than two minutes, were thrown out by Chairman Chen’s bodyguards, along with their household registration and IDs scattered all over the ground, looking utterly embarrassed.

"Hey, how can this guy be like this? Is there no sense of reason?"

"Exactly! Is it reasonable to jump the queue? Isn’t there any law?"

"Where did this brute come from? Does having a bit of money make one invincible? Don’t you worry, I’ll post this online for exposure!"

The people in the hall were all furious. Cutting in line could be tolerated if there was a genuine emergency, but doing so so blatantly and rudely—this they had never seen before!

Everyone present was a newlywed, all young, full of vigor, indignant at injustice, expressing dissatisfaction with Chairman Chen’s behavior. Especially Xiao Bai and her husband, who were registering peacefully; what suddenly got them thrown out?

"What kind of person is this? Is there no order left?" Xiao Bai was helped up by her husband and rubbed her aching backside, slapping the registration office door and questioning the man in the black suit beside her.

"Miss, please calm down, calm down." The man smiled, showing some guilt, "You don’t want to mess with the man just now. Consider today as unlucky; come back tomorrow for registration!"

"Why should I? My husband and I went through a lot to get time off our jobs, waited half a month counting on this day, and suddenly we have to change the day? Is there no management here at the marriage office?" Xiao Bai was seething with anger; her joyous day was ruined by being thrown out like that, anyone would feel upset.

Not only she felt uncomfortable, but Xiao Bai’s husband also felt uncomfortable. Everyone who waited in the hall for so long was uncomfortable.

"Hey, keep your voice down, keep it down." The staff quickly tugged at Xiao Bai and then looked at the people in the hall, "Sorry everyone, the marriage office is taking a break today, come back for registration tomorrow, please come back tomorrow!"

"Why should we? Who’s this man acting so cocky?"

"Exactly! I’ll post this online; I don’t believe the law won’t handle it!"

Upon hearing this, the man quickly waved his hand, "Don’t, please don’t. I advise everyone; we common folk can’t afford to mess with big figures, especially those who have underworld ties. If you make a fuss online for this, and end up really facing retaliation, don’t blame me for not warning you."

The man’s words had some impact; everyone fell silent. Stirring up trouble for temporary satisfaction, if it truly offended some big shot leading to endless trouble thereafter, that truly would not be worthwhile.
