Chapter 164: Chapter 164: The Lucky Farmer is at Ease, While the Husband with No Heirs is Busy Pursuing His Wife 24
“This child must be very anxious,” the Empress leisurely said. “When he first returned to the palace, there was a time when he was almost beside himself. Whether it was noble ladies of the Capital City or daughters of prominent families, he wouldn’t even spare them a glance. You’ve seen how downcast he has been these past three years. It’s only now that he’s starting to show a bit of spirit.”
“Although it was the first meeting, I think if Miss Su becomes the Crown Princess Consort, she will certainly keep Huaichu in line. Having her would be a blessing for the Crown Prince,” the Emperor said, stroking his beard in agreement. He and the Empress had been married for decades, and their affection and trust for each other ran deep. He touched the Empress’s shoulder, “Madam, what was that good idea you were speaking of just now?”
“Since Huaichu feels that he owes something and doesn’t dare to pursue Ruanruan openly, we might as well give him a little shock. This way, his true feelings will naturally be stimulated,” the Empress said with a discerning look. She had a lot of experience in matchmaking young people. Back then, in Capital City, many young couples came together with the Empress’s help, “Ruanruan will later go to Capital City. By then, if we arranged for a few considerate young gentlemen to be around her, when Huaichu sees this, he will naturally become jealous, and then…”
The Emperor got the point instantly. He nodded in approval, a smile hanging on his lips, “We’ll do just that!”

Su Zhiruan had been much busier recently than before. With the end of the year approaching, whether it was the shops or the trading company, big or small, she had to personally attend to them, busy from dawn to dusk.
The first time Fu Huaichu visited her residence, he saw the hurried Su Zhiruan rushing out.
“Ruanruan.” He looked up at her. “You’re going out?”
Su Zhiruan nodded, and motioned for the servants to open the gate wider to let Fu Huaichu in. “Yes, did you want to see Zhezhi and Zheye?”
The Protectors watched Su Zhiruan seated in the carriage and the tall, handsome Fu Huaichu with a worrisome look in his eyes. They sensed the scent of gossip immediately.
And when they saw Fu Huaichu’s face, they were all taken aback!
He!
He bore an uncanny resemblance to the young master of the house. Even without speaking a word and just standing together, one would instinctively feel they were family.
The Protectors exchanged glances, each coming to the same conclusion in their minds—this could very well be the biological father of the young master and miss!
“Someone.” Su Zhiruan, holding a ledger in her hand, beckoned a Protector, “From now on, let this distinguished guest in whenever he wishes to see the young master and miss. Don’t hesitate to grant him entry.”
“Yes.”
This statement from Su Zhiruan was almost a confirmation of their guesses. To allow him to enter the household freely and to visit the two young masters meant he was surely no ordinary person.
Fu Huaichu stood at the doorway, watching Su Zhiruan’s carriage slowly drive away, getting farther and farther, until it vanished from sight.
“My lord, please—” The Protector to his left had been silent the whole time. After Su Zhiruan’s carriage had left, he spoke at the right moment, offering Fu Huaichu a reminder, “I will take you inside to see the two young masters.”
“Thank you.”
At that moment, as he followed the Protector inside, a thin sweat broke out on his originally dry palms.
He was about to see his children now.
The last time he ran into them on the street, a guess and suspicion had arisen in his heart.
But now, learning that Zheye and Zhezhi were indeed his children, having been apart for three years and not having looked after the two children or Su Zhiruan at all, his conscience couldn’t help but feel guilty.
The Su Family estate was by no means small; the Protector led the way at the front, passing by the side of the main hall and winding around to the left toward the back courtyard’s small garden. The area was neatly tended, with some simple and elegant flowers, oddly shaped artificial rocks, and a clear spring running through it, spanned by a stone arch bridge.
Next to the artificial rocks was a large pavilion, where at this moment, two children were sitting together, clutching ledgers and frowning, as if discussing something.
Zhezhi’s tiny hands gripped a writing brush. Although she was still very young, she held the brush properly, drawing measured strokes in the ledger. Two abacuses lay at her side, one a large wooden one and the other beside Zheye, who shuffled the beads with some resignation.
“Zhezhi, let brother look at the accounts,” Zheye, usually the picture of a steady older brother, shook his head and said, “No wonder mother has always said there are experts in every field. If I were to face this kind of thing all day long, my head might explode.”
“Brother, take a break for a while. As long as you don’t tear the ledger apart, we’re good,” Zhezhi collected all the ledgers spread out in front of him and placed them by her side, freeing up a large space for him to rest his head and sleep.
Zheye lay down on the table, swirling the beads of the abacus with his tiny fingers to pass the time. Hearing what Zhezhi had said, he hastily pledged his loyalty, “Zhezhi, rest assured, I’ll protect you and the ledger in the future. I won’t do something like tearing your ledger apart ever again.”
The two children made a ruckus, all of which Fu Huaichu observed from a distance.
At that moment, Zheye, who had sharp eyes, spotted someone in the distance. He immediately poked his sister, “Zhezhi, someone’s coming.”
The Protector, seeing that the two young masters had finally looked over, stepped forward and said, “Young master, young miss, this gentleman has come to find you. I’ll take my leave now.”
He had wanted to interrupt the young masters earlier to tell them someone had arrived, but the distinguished guest gestured for him not to, so he had stayed silent. Now, he felt it best to leave quickly, returning the peaceful space to the three of them.
“You are—” Zhezhi jumped down from the stool, tapping her finger thoughtfully as she pondered. Suddenly, she slapped her forehead, “I remember now! You’re the gentleman from the other day, the one who looks a lot like brother!”
Zheye recognized him as well, and stepping in front of his sister, he first gave a bow to Fu Huaichu before saying, “Gentleman, your sudden visit to our residence is unexpected. If you have a matter to discuss, the adults of the house are not present; perhaps you could come again another day.”
“I’ve come specifically to see you,” Fu Huaichu said, looking at the child before him who seemed to have been carved from the same mold. A surge of indescribable emotion welled up in his heart, as if life had been granted an extension in a single moment. He looked at Zhezhi and Zheye, “May I have a word in private?”
“Alright,” Zheye looked at Fu Huaichu.
Although he was only three and a half years old, given the situation thus far, he had already guessed the identity of this unintended visitor.
Being led directly here by the Protector surely meant it was his mother’s intent.
And the fact that he looked so much like him only made Zheye more certain.
If his guess was right, this gentleman was their biological father!
Zheye tugged at his sister’s sleeve and whispered, “Zhezhi, listen to me when the time comes.”
Zhezhi looked at the gentleman walking ahead, then at her brother beside her, and finally decisively sided with her brother. She nodded obediently, “I’ll listen to brother!”
“Zhezhi is such a good girl.”
Zheye ruffled her hair.
Afterward, the three of them entered the garden.
