Chapter 171: Chapter 171: Some Stories Are Doomed From the Start

Even someone as straightforward as Jasper Spencer could sense the tension in the air.

The two had just gone through a harrowing incident and were both injured, yet not a single comforting word was spoken between them. Instead, one remained distant and indifferent, while the other’s eyes seemed soaked with blood.

It was Julian Ford who was driving, and it was his mistake. What was the meaning behind his cold and detached expression?

Jasper Spencer was utterly confused, but clearly, this was not the right time to ask for the details.

Besides, even if he did ask, these two probably wouldn’t pay him any attention.

On the way, Julian Ford made a call to Josiah Sutton, and upon arriving at the hospital, he took Scarlett Shaw directly to Josiah Sutton’s consultation room.

"Take another look at her wounds."

Josiah Sutton’s long, narrow eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses swept over Julian Ford’s arm, where the blood had dried. Without immediately asking what happened, he called over a colleague to take Julian Ford to the side room for medication.

Julian Ford glanced at Scarlett, then silently withdrew his gaze and turned to leave.

Josiah Sutton frowned and was about to ask Scarlett what had happened when she, with a shaky voice edged with tears, said, "It must be because of his illness."

Josiah Sutton felt a pang in his chest.

Scarlett’s tears fell as she spoke helplessly, "He suddenly zoned out while driving earlier, Josiah, it must be because his illness has worsened."

From the time the accident happened until now, Julian Ford hadn’t said a word.

But even without saying anything, in that instant when the car nearly went off the cliff and Julian made a forced turn and stop, a voice inside Scarlett told her:

This could be the only reason why Julian Ford, who couldn’t bear to let her get hurt, made such a mistake.

Josiah Sutton remained silent until he reapplied medication to Scarlett’s wound, then asked gravely:

"Has he been having severe issues with his family lately?"

Scarlett looked down, her voice despondent, "I think so."

Josiah Sutton sighed, his always gentle and calm demeanor now tinged with seriousness, "Scarlett, Julian’s illness cannot be delayed any longer. Last time he came for a check-up, he intended to seek treatment, but now things with his family have deteriorated to this point, that plan might fall through again."

Scarlett was momentarily stunned, feeling as if her chest was being clenched tight, "Has he always been like this?"

"When he was first diagnosed with this illness last summer, Julian had no intention of receiving treatment. It’s been nearly a year now, and his attitude has remained indecisive."

Seemingly reminded of something, Josiah shifted the topic and asked:

"By the way, you and he officially met last summer, didn’t you?"

Scarlett nodded.

Something flashed through her mind, and she parted her lips, her voice hoarse and strained, "Josiah, do you remember the exact date when Julian was diagnosed?"

Josiah paused briefly but still provided a date.

In an instant, it felt as though her chest had been heavily struck. Scarlett’s entire being was filled with an indescribable emotion, and the tears she had just stopped fell uncontrollably, soaking and blurring the prescription sheet on the table.

Some stories are destined from the start to have a certain end.

That night they met in the bar, both she and Julian were in despair.

What she had always thought was an entanglement based on mutual physical attraction turned out to be two disheartened people seeking comfort in each other’s company.

Upon realizing this, Scarlett found it increasingly hard to breathe.

If Julian Ford hadn’t been ill, he wouldn’t have gone to the bar alone that night feeling down, and he wouldn’t have crossed paths with her at all.

Everything they had gone through together, for Julian Ford, was built upon the inevitability of his eventual departure.

Scarlett hunched over, her tears flowing more and more fiercely, almost unable to cry out.

Josiah handed her two tissues, gradually understanding the source of her pain from her agonized expression, and as his own expression became increasingly complicated, he thought for a moment before saying to Scarlett:

"Scarlett, for Julian, being able to come this far with you must be a good thing. Since knowing you, his mindset has become much more positive than before, and he’s been more willing to seek treatment. Without you, I can’t even imagine what he would be like now."

Yet Scarlett couldn’t muster any happiness, "But his condition is serious now, and there’s nothing I can do."

"You could openly discuss this with him; right now, you’re the only one who can persuade him. Most importantly—"

Josiah paused, his expression extremely serious, and said:

"If today’s accident was indeed caused by Julian’s illness, he understands his own body better than anyone. Do you think he might use this as a reason to break up with you?"

The answer was all but certain.

As proud as Julian Ford was, even if he were willing to undergo treatment, he wouldn’t let such a miserable state show before Scarlett.

Moreover, life and death were uncertain.

Letting Scarlett accompany him to face the worst possible outcome was something Julian Ford, by his nature, would never do.

Prolonging the pain rather than ending it quickly.

He would undoubtedly push her away without hesitation.

Josiah Sutton’s first thought after saying this was that it was too cruel to Scarlett.

After all, it seemed that regardless of which choice was made, there was a complete possibility for Scarlett to lose Julian Ford.

"As you can see from this incident and Julian’s family situation, other than continuously exerting pressure on Julian, they have no positive impact on his illness, only you can persuade Julian."

As a doctor, Josiah Sutton couldn’t say anything too biased.

All medical conditions require scientific evidence.

This was the first time Josiah, with an intensely emotional bias, stubbornly believed Julian’s illness was closely related to Ezra Ford and Freya Pierce’s long-standing attitude towards him.

Scarlett’s tears had finally dried up, and upon hearing Josiah’s words, a barely perceptible disdain surfaced in her usually clear eyes.

She and Josiah didn’t voice their innermost thoughts, but at this moment, they shared the same sentiment.

"What is truly going on between Julian Ford and his parents?"

Yet even with her aversion, Scarlett asked calmly:

"Josiah, you’re also aware that Ryan Ford is not Mrs. Ford’s biological child. Julian being their only son, how could such a family atmosphere exist?"

"I’m not entirely sure. Ever since I’ve known Julian, he has had this kind of relationship with his family."

Josiah Sutton spoke with a stern expression:

"I only know that I can completely understand why Julian wouldn’t want to tell Mr. Ford and Aunt Pierce."

Scarlett looked at him, and in their eyes was a mutual understanding.

Scarlett: "I rarely quarrel with my parents, but on the few occasions I did, I remember using not eating or sleeping on the cold floor hoping to get sick as a way to make them feel guilty."

Josiah Sutton nodded, "That’s the thing, between parents and children, if the parents don’t correctly convey love, it mistakenly makes the child feel they only deserve love if they get hurt."

When children haven’t formed a concept of love, many will use such perceived retaliatory methods to elicit guilt from their parents and thereby gain love.

It’s only with growing up and building their worldview that they slowly understand what true love is.

Like Scarlett and Ryan.

But not everyone is so fortunate.

They grow up in distorted love, becoming someone they despise, and in the end, treat their loved ones and their own children in the same way.
