Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Counting Money for the Person Who Cheated You

Scarlett Shaw returned to Capitoline on the day of Josiah Sutton’s invitation, wearing an exquisite water green satin gown.

The gown was form-fitting, outlining a waist that was easily held, smooth as snow.

When Julian Ford came to pick her up, he saw her and pulled her into his arms for a while.

After kissing her, he pinched her slender waist, glanced at the gift bag she was carrying, and said with calm displeasure, "You sure value Josiah and even prepared a gift."

Scarlett: "Josiah personally called me, of course I have to be courteous."

"Josiah?"

Julian grasped the key point, squinting to survey her.

"When did you get so close to him?"

"He’s older than me, so I should call him brother," Scarlett leaned into his embrace, whispering, "I also used to call you brother."

When Scarlett called Julian brother, it was always under some indescribable circumstances; initially, she thought Julian was a pervert, but now, she’s gotten accustomed to it and her skin has become thicker.

Julian gave her a sidelong glance and pulled her into the car.

Driving to the banquet, he asked casually, "Was your business trip to Cloud Harbor smooth recently?"

Scarlett froze, her mouth quicker than her mind, "Smooth."

Sharp as Julian, he caught her brief hesitation, "Smooth?"

A dangerous tone of questioning.

Scarlett pondered briefly and truthfully recounted the episode of dining with Kyle York and Mia, only omitting Mia’s name, referring to her as someone from Dragonspire Properties.

After hearing this, Julian said, "Kyle and the people from Dragonspire Properties must have colluded a lot, trying to rope you in to profit from Veridian."

Scarlett thought of this too and nodded in agreement.

Such personal profiteering is not uncommon within Veridian; high-level, middle-level, even salespersons, many are involved in dishonest practices.

Having seen it many times, it’s become routine.

Especially behind these appearances, greater interests might be entangled.

Julian didn’t care much about this episode; instead, he suddenly reminded Scarlett, "Dragonspire Properties is a deep water, be cautious, don’t get involved."

Scarlett agreed.

But she couldn’t help thinking of Mia.

Recalling Mia’s confident demeanor when handing her an envelope that day, which Scarlett refused, she suspected Mia’s involvement was significant in this deep water.

While Julian checked the car mirror, his peripheral vision caught Scarlett’s slightly dazed profile, his gaze deepened, but he said nothing.

The banquet was held at a suburban manor.

As Scarlett walked into the manor arm in arm with Julian, not far from the champagne table, Josiah Sutton and Zoe Sutton stood face to face. Josiah still had his indulgent, doting smile, seemingly saying something, while Zoe’s pretty face showed discontent, but soon she nodded obediently.

"Zoe, I’ll remind you once more today; don’t cling to Julian like you did at the previous wedding, and don’t disrespect Julian’s girlfriend."

Zoe frowned and said disappointedly, "Brother, why are you speaking for an outsider?"

"Julian agreed to come on the condition that you won’t cause trouble and will give Scarlett enough respect. You agreed, so there’s no reason to go back on your word. A person shouldn’t break promises lightly, understand?"

Josiah said sternly.

Zoe nodded reluctantly, "I know."

Josiah patted her head with a smile, "Good girl."

Zoe looked at her brother’s gentle gaze and couldn’t help but complain:

"You’re too considerate of others, that’s why you were fooled by that woman! She even promised to love you forever, yet you still want me not to break promises? I don’t understand you and Julian, always chasing after women without family background or connections, and even helping them count the money after being cheated."

"Zoe."

Josiah’s gaze suddenly went cold.

Zoe pursed her lips, still unconvinced, but said nothing more.

Their conversation had barely ended when they looked up to see Scarlett and Julian appearing before them, the former arm in arm with the latter. Her pretty, clean face seemed to say:

- We heard everything you said.

Despite being one of the subjects talked about, Scarlett wasn’t embarrassed; she confidently presented the gift to Josiah.

Josiah accepted it graciously, thanked her with a smile, then glanced at Zoe.

Zoe’s eyes showed reluctance, but she still nodded in greeting politely, "Julian, Miss Shaw."

Julian nodded lightly.

Scarlett responded with a polite smile.

After calling out, Zoe’s gaze shifted behind the two of them, waving to Jasper Spencer not far away and indicated him to come over.

When Scarlett turned her head, she saw Jasper and Yana Yarrow standing together.

Yana was chatting with Jasper, who listened lazily with his hands in his pockets; but upon meeting Zoe’s gaze, he pulled himself together, hesitated for a few seconds, and then walked over to Zoe.

As Jasper moved away from Yana, Scarlett noticed Yana lightly biting her lip, a fleeting darkness in her eyes.

Jasper approached Zoe, who took the initiative to say, "The previous matter was my fault; I won’t ask you to do such things in the future."

Jasper raised an eyebrow in surprise, "Zoe, you’re finally learning to admit your mistakes."

Though teasing, a smile appeared on Jasper’s handsome face, adding a touch of warmth to his usual nonchalant demeanor.

Zoe glanced at her brother.

It was only because those little actions had been caught by her brother!

Zoe and Jasper exchanged pleasantries, the atmosphere harmonious. Scarlett saw Yana quietly walking away in the distance and hurriedly followed.

"Yana!"

She caught up with Yana at the staircase landing on the third floor of the manor.

This floor mainly housed guest rooms, and as everyone was gathered on the first floor, it was nearly empty up here.

Yana turned back with a smile Scarlett was familiar with, "Scarlett!"

Before Scarlett could speak, Yana excitedly and gossipingly said, "I just saw you walking in arm in arm with Julian!"

Scarlett looked at Yana’s smile, her words stuck in her throat.

Some matters, the person involved clearly didn’t want to address them, and if Scarlett broke that boundary, it would seem nosy.

Before Scarlett responded, Yana continued, "Although everyone’s here for fun today, they are all sons and daughters from the upper circles. It looks like Julian is planning to openly have you by his side! After all, your relationship could soon spread to the Ford family."

Scarlett had also thought of this point.

However—

She sighed lightly, "Yana, to be honest, I now feel that love is something shared between two people; whether others know or not doesn’t matter."

Yana contemplated, then asked, "Is it because you feel that you and Julian might not last long?"

Scarlett shook her head and said, "I always get the feeling that if the Ford family knows, his days might not be better than mine."

Scarlett wasn’t saying this out of low self-esteem or doubting if she was worthy of him.

Rather, she thought back on her experiences with Julian over time.
