Our Love Story: Hard to Guard Against the Sudden Love Strike-Chapter 399 - 378: Mr. Forrester Visits His Mother-in-law
After Auntie King had finished venting, Sienna Thornton pushed the employment agreement and pen towards her, circling the section indicating the salary with her finger, saying, "Auntie, I’m usually quite busy with work, so I hope you can take good care of my mother, and besides looking after her, also spend some time chatting with her. I’ll offer you a salary of twenty thousand a month, and you’ll get three days off each month which you can take consecutively, to go back home if you need to. If you don’t take those days off, I’ll give you an extra two thousand bonus. How does that sound?"
Auntie King is a straightforward and outspoken middle-aged woman with a lively personality. The reason Sienna Thornton offers such good terms is that she hopes Auntie King’s personality can have a positive influence on Melinda Linton.
Melinda Linton has been taciturn all her life, keeping everything to herself. Her poor health might be due to not just overwork but also some deep-seated emotional issues. Sienna Thornton is both busy with work and, being a daughter, finds it inconvenient to ask her mother certain things directly.
Upon hearing the salary Sienna Thornton was offering, Auntie King was stunned and grabbed Sienna Thornton’s hand, incredulously saying, "Lawyer Thornton, don’t you know the market rate for live-in caregivers in Brimfield right now? Given your mother’s situation, even one thousand would be more than enough!"
Sienna Thornton shook her head with a smile and patted Auntie King’s hand, saying, "I know you will definitely take good care of my mother."
Auntie King, moved to tears, signed her name on the employment agreement.
As she was signing, Sienna Thornton added a last point: "My sister, who doesn’t get along well with me, also lives with my mother. Please keep an eye on her and let me know if she does anything unusual."
Auntie King immediately understood: "Sure! No problem! This isn’t my first time handling something like this!"
Sienna Thornton already knew Auntie King was clever, so she said no more, stood up to shake her hand, went to the walk-in closet to change, and then drove with her to Melinda Linton’s place.
.
As expected, the sweet-talking Auntie King got along wonderfully with the kind-hearted Melinda Linton, though Jenna Raines eyed Auntie King warily. Sienna Thornton understood that Jenna Raines suspected she had called Auntie King over to keep an eye on her, thinking: This girl indeed has a lot of thoughts.
Sienna Thornton spent half a day with Melinda Linton in the apartment and helped Auntie King get familiar with the surroundings.
Though the apartment has three rooms, Sienna Thornton insisted that Auntie King share a room with Melinda Linton, so two days earlier, she had a narrow bed brought in and placed in Melinda Linton’s bedroom.
Auntie King packed up simple luggage, and in the afternoon, Sienna Thornton took her to the nearby market and supermarket to get familiar with the routes.
The apartment is in an old neighborhood with complete facilities, a five-minute walk to the market, and a ten-minute walk to the nearest mall.
Walking out with Auntie King, they were halfway when Auntie King asked, "Lawyer Thornton, is Miss Raines really your sister?"
"Yes," Sienna responded lightly, "Auntie, there’s no need to formally address her as ’Miss Raines,’ just call her ’Jenna’."
Upon receiving confirmation from Sienna Thornton, Auntie King couldn’t shake a feeling of oddness.
She looked up at the tall, beautiful, and graceful Sienna Thornton, unable to believe that the short, chubby, and rather plain-looking Jenna Raines could be her sister. Standing together, they looked like chalk and cheese, nothing like siblings.
Seeing Auntie King’s baffled expression, Sienna Thornton smiled: "Jenna and I are half-sisters."
Auntie King suddenly realized.
The sisters differed in looks, speech, and demeanor. Sienna Thornton was elegant and generous, while Jenna Raines acted roughly. Auntie King felt that the sisters’ biological fathers must have been from different strata.
.
After buying the groceries at the market, Auntie King invited Sienna Thornton to stay for dinner.
Sienna Thornton couldn’t refuse and called Simon Forrester, saying she wouldn’t be home for dinner and told him to eat at the office.
Once Simon Forrester heard the new caregiver was Auntie King, who had previously looked after Sienna Thornton, he insisted on coming over that evening too.
Sienna Thornton then went to the kitchen to inform Auntie King, who was cooking, to prepare for one more person.
Before six o’clock, Sienna Thornton was setting the table when the doorbell rang. Just as she was about to answer, she saw Jenna Raines, who had been watching TV in the living room, rush to the door.
Jenna Raines eagerly opened the door and, upon seeing Simon Forrester outside, exclaimed joyfully, "Brother-in-law! You’re here!"
Simon Forrester was smiling at first, but his face quickly turned impassive when he saw Jenna Raines instead of Sienna Thornton at the door. He glanced inside and asked, "Where’s your sister?"
Jenna Raines didn’t say where Sienna Thornton was but instead opened the door wider and enthusiastically invited Simon Forrester in, "Come in, brother-in-law!"
Sienna Thornton took a deep breath and headed straight for the door.
When Simon Forrester saw her, he smiled again and, lifting a bag, said, "I bought your favorite cherries."
Sienna Thornton naturally took the bag from his hand and, taking his hand with the other, led him inside.
Jenna Raines stood aside, her eyes lingering on Simon Forrester, whom she hadn’t seen for over a month.
"Jenna." Sienna Thornton suddenly called.
Jenna Raines snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Sienna Thornton, who handed her the bag, "Rinse these cherries on the balcony." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Jenna Raines’s cheerful expression instantly turned sour.
Sienna Thornton led Simon Forrester to Melinda Linton’s room, "My mom’s in there, and Auntie King is cooking. Go say hi to them."
Simon Forrester gently replied, "Okay."
The two of them sat with Melinda Linton for a while, and then Sienna Thornton took Simon Forrester to see Auntie King.
In the kitchen, Auntie King was so happy to see Simon Forrester that she forgot to attend to the cooking, shaking his hand and exclaiming, "Oh my, Mr. Forrester! It’s been over two years! You look younger and younger! Congratulations to you and Lawyer Thornton!..."
Hearing Auntie King’s words, Sienna Thornton learned that back when Mrs. Reed had intruded into Simon Forrester’s apartment and slashed her own face, Auntie King had been so frightened that she resigned. Not only did Simon Forrester pay her salary for that month, but he also privately gave her a hundred thousand as compensation for the fright.
No wonder Auntie King’s heart always leaned towards Mr. Forrester as soon as she saw Sienna Thornton.
.
"Today’s shrimp are wild-caught, super fresh! Eating wild-caught shrimp is good, not just for your calcium but also nourishing!" Auntie King said warmly as she helped Melinda Linton peel shrimp.
Hearing it was good for calcium, Sienna Thornton immediately thought of the injury on Simon Forrester’s back. Just as she was about to peel some shrimp for him, she saw a peeled shrimp suddenly appear in her bowl.
