Our Love Story: Hard to Guard Against the Sudden Love Strike-Chapter 360 - 341: Alibi
Sienna Thornton was interrogated all night.
In the middle of the night, Seth Sutton went out to rest, and another detective came in to ask questions.
Sienna Thornton didn’t sleep all night or eat; she only drank a little water.
The police kept asking the same questions over and over. She really didn’t want to speak anymore, but she was afraid of being labeled as uncooperative, so even though she felt very unwell, she still cooperated and answered every time.
Locked inside, she didn’t know what time it was and could only guess that several hours had seemed to pass.
When Seth Sutton came in for the second time, he was still in the same clothes and looked the same, which made it impossible for her to determine if it was already the next day.
Seeing Seth Sutton sitting at the interrogation table again, starting the third round of questioning, Sienna Thornton sighed deeply and asked, "Officer, when can I see my lawyer?"
When she was taken from the law firm by the police, she instructed Rhonda Wagner to apply to become her defense lawyer immediately, hoping to meet and discuss the case within 48 hours.
But when she was taken away, it was past six in the evening. Even if Rhonda Wagner submitted the defense lawyer application immediately, the earliest it would be approved was the next day during the day.
But is it the next day already?
Sienna didn’t know.
The interrogation room was airtight, there were no tools showing the time, and the police wouldn’t tell her what time it was. This feeling was practically equivalent to being isolated from the world, not knowing what was happening outside and not knowing the current time, only falling into endless waiting, which was terrifying.
Seth Sutton glanced at his watch and sneered, "It’s still early! What, you think once you see your lawyer, you can leave here? That you won’t need to cooperate with the investigation anymore?"
He suddenly changed his expression, slapped the file folder on the table, and shouted, "I’m telling you! If you don’t honestly explain how you killed the deceased, it’s useless even if your lawyer comes!"
"How is it useless?" Sienna Thornton looked at him calmly, her voice slow, concise, and clear, "My lawyer can follow up on the progress of your case — within three days, you must send the case to the prosecutor’s office for review, and the prosecutor’s office must decide ’arrest’ or ’not arrest’ within seven days. If ’not arrest,’ you must release me immediately; even if ’arrest’ is warranted, my lawyer can help me apply for ’bail pending trial.’"
Seth Sutton was at a loss, Sienna Thornton’s sharp tongue made him angry.
He put on a stern face and said seriously, "I must correct you! Your lawyer can only apply for ’bail pending trial,’ not handle it! Any application can be rejected!"
Sienna Thornton looked at him coldly: "Article 60 of our country’s Criminal Procedure Law stipulates: ’For criminal suspects and defendants proven to have committed a crime, and who may be sentenced to imprisonment or more severe punishments, measures such as release on bail pending trial or residential surveillance should be taken; if insufficient to prevent social danger, arrest should be made according to the law.’ Not to mention that the evidence you currently have isn’t sufficient, even if it is, I, as a suspect with no criminal record or accomplices, don’t meet the conditions of ’possible social danger,’ so there isn’t enough justification to reject my bail application."
Seth Sutton wasn’t trained in law, he couldn’t easily cite legal articles like Sienna Thornton, nor did he have a lawyer’s argumentative mindset. So, when Sienna Thornton said this, he was once again at a loss, his face looking very unpleasant.
Besides, there was a female police recorder in the interrogation room; losing face as a man aside, in his whole career, he had never encountered a suspect like Sienna Thornton who was impenetrable and poised.
Either she really didn’t commit the crime, or it’s a high-IQ crime.
He knew Sienna Thornton was a PhD in law, hence more inclined towards the latter — a high-IQ crime!
He became a police detective because of his hatred for evil, so he was especially angered at this moment, deciding to be more severe in interrogating Sienna Thornton.
However, in the following time, no matter what he asked, Sienna Thornton only asked, "What time is it now?" After asking several times, his patience ran out, and he finally grumpily replied, "Eight in the morning on the second day!"
Sienna Thornton knew in her heart that she should soon be able to see Rhonda Wagner.
Seth Sutton continued questioning, all questions Sienna Thornton had answered before.
He wanted to discover discrepancies in the suspect’s testimony over repeated questioning, seeking a breakthrough in the case.
Another round of interrogation ended, and Seth Sutton called for someone to change shifts again.
Sienna Thornton guessed it was probably noon. Seeing Seth Sutton step down from the interrogation platform to leave, she asked, "Have my arrest procedures been completed?"
Seth Sutton paused, turned around to look at her, his expression somber, not saying a word.
Sienna Thornton said, "I was detained around seven last night, and by seven tonight, your interrogation time will be over. Officer, I must remind you, there are about five hours left."
Seth Sutton said nothing and left with a gloomy face.
The door was pulled shut forcefully by him, making a "bang" sound. This, to Sienna Thornton, who hadn’t slept for the night and whose heart was vaguely feeling unwell, made her body feel even worse.
The female police recorder at the computer looked at her with sympathetic eyes, shook her head, and said nothing.
After a while, two female detectives in police uniforms entered, one of whom took out a handcuff key to unlock it, saying, "Your lawyer is here, now we’ll take you to see him."
Sienna Thornton breathed a sigh of relief and followed the two female officers, walking through several corridors to another room’s door.
The room was opened, and she went in, seeing a small rectangular room with an iron railing in the middle, a table and chairs on the other side of the railing, and only a chair on her side.
She sat and waited quietly.
After a few minutes, Rhonda Wagner entered from the door on the other side of the railing, and the female officer standing behind her closed the door and left.
She looked calmly at Rhonda Wagner.
Rhonda Wagner smiled at her, but it was a forced smile.
He placed the case file bag on the table in front of him and asked, "Lawyer Thornton, are you okay? Did they give you a hard time?"
Sienna Thornton shook her head and smiled, "No, they kept asking questions, and I cooperated and answered them."
Rhonda Wagner nodded and took out the materials from the case file bag: "Time is limited, let’s discuss the case first."
He explained to Sienna Thornton in detail what he had learned from the relevant departments and what Simon Forrester had reported to him.
Upon hearing that the forensic doctor inferred that Nina Sinclair was poisoned at 10:10 PM and died at 10:40 PM, hence the criminal investigators believed that Sienna Thornton, who had half an hour unaccounted for between 10 and 10:30, was a major suspect, Sienna Thornton’s expression was displeased, saying: "During that half-hour, I just happened to be in the East West Suburb Avenue with no surveillance, and because it was too dark and my mood was bad, I missed the quickest exit home and took a long detour to get back home. So this extended my normal time home, making it seem like there was time to commit the crime. Therefore, I can’t prove my alibi during that time, which indeed would be a disadvantage for me."
Rhonda Wagner nodded, voice and expression very heavy: "The most controversial point at present is here, now we have to see if the prosecution decides to press charges."
