Chapter 84: Chapter 84

Aria’s POV.

I stood by the window in our room, my face pressed close to the cool glass. Tears rolled down my cheeks, hot and stinging, as I stared out at the dark night.

The moon hung low, its silver light spilling over the pack house garden, but it didn’t make me feel better. My heart felt heavy, like a rock sitting in my chest.

Alpha Kael’s words from earlier echoed in my mind, sharp and cold like a winter wind. "Go to sleep, Luna Celeste," he’d said, his voice hard, his eyes distant.

He’d walked out, leaving me alone, and I couldn’t stop wondering: Was he mad at me? Did he hate me now? I was so stupid to have even gone to eavesdrop, but then again, I couldn’t have just ignored the situation. Not when that cunning sister of mine was involved.

Although I couldn’t hear their words, I was certain they were planning something deadly.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand, but more tears came, blurring the stars outside. My fingers twisted the edge of my nightgown, the soft fabric bunching in my hands.

I’d messed up. I’d sneaked into the garden, overheard Celeste and Alpha Nicholas, and almost got caught.

Kael was so angry, and I’d never seen him like that, not with me. My chest ached, and I pressed a hand over my heart, trying to calm the hurt.

Inside my head, Kyra, my inner wolf, stirred. Her voice was soft, like a warm hug. "Aria, don’t cry," she said, her tone gentle but firm. "Kael doesn’t hate you. He’s your mate. Our mate. He’s just upset because you made a bad choice. You put yourself in danger, and he’s scared for you."

I sniffled, my breath fogging the window. "But he was so cold, Kyra, his words didn’t sound that way," I whispered, my voice shaky. "He wouldn’t even look at me. What if he doesn’t trust me anymore?"

"He loves you," Kyra said, her voice steady. "He’s angry, but it’s because he cares. Give him time. He’ll come back, and you can fix this."

I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me. I wanted to believe her, but the hurt in my chest wouldn’t go away.

I turned from the window and paced the room, my bare feet soft against the wooden floor. The candle on the bedside table flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

The room smelled of lavender and wax, but it felt empty without Kael. I sat on the edge of the bed, my hands clasped tightly in my lap, and stared at the door, willing it to open.

Hours passed, each one slower than the last. The festival music from downstairs had faded, leaving only silence.

My eyes burned from crying, and my throat felt raw. I kept replaying Kael’s face, his clenched jaw, his cold eyes, the way he’d pulled away when I hugged him.

I hugged my knees to my chest, my nightgown pooling around me, and let out a shaky breath. "Please come back," I whispered to the empty room.

Finally, the door creaked open. My head snapped up, my heart leaping. Kael stepped inside, his broad frame filling the doorway.

His dark hair was messy, and his cloak hung loosely over his shoulders. His face was tired, lines etched deep around his eyes, but they softened when he saw me.

I stood, my legs wobbly, and wiped my face quickly, hoping he wouldn’t see the tears.

"Alpha Kael," I said, my voice small and cracked. I took a step toward him, my hands trembling. "Can we talk? Please?"

He paused, his hand still on the door handle. For a moment, I thought he’d turn away. His eyes flicked to the floor, and he sighed, heavy and tired. "Luna Celeste," he said, his voice low, "it’s late and you should be sleeping."

My heart sank, like a stone dropping into a deep well. I couldn’t let him shut me out again. I rushed forward, my feet quick on the floor, and grabbed his hand.

My fingers wrapped tightly around his, holding on like he was my lifeline. "Please, Alpha Kael," I said, my voice breaking. My eyes stung with fresh tears, and I looked up at him, begging. "I need to talk to you."

He stiffened, his hand twitching like he wanted to pull away. His jaw tightened, and I felt a pang of fear.

But I held on tighter, my nails digging into his skin. "I’m so sorry," I whispered, my voice shaking. "I didn’t mean to make you mad. I was stupid, sneaking around like that. I just... I wanted to help the pack. I didn’t think I’d almost get caught."

Kael’s eyes met mine, and for a moment, they were still cold, like a frozen lake. My chest tightened, and I thought I’d lose him forever.

But then his face softened, just a little. He let out a long breath, his shoulders sagging. "Luna," he said, his voice quieter now, almost gentle. "I’m not mad at you."

I blinked, my tears spilling over. "You’re not?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. My hands still clung to his, afraid to let go.

He shook his head, his eyes searching mine. "I’m mad at myself," he said, his voice rough with emotion. He stepped closer, his free hand lifting to brush a tear from my cheek.

His touch was warm, and I leaned into it, my heart fluttering. "You put yourself in danger, Luna. Sneaking around, listening to Nicholas and Aria, it wasn’t safe. If something happened to you..." He trailed off, his voice catching, and I saw pain flash in his eyes.

My throat tightened, and I squeezed his hand. "I didn’t mean to scare you," I said, my voice soft. "I just wanted to protect the pack, like you do. I thought if I knew what they were planning, I could help."

He sighed again, his thumb brushing my cheek. "I know," he said, his voice low. "But you can’t do things like that. You’re my Luna. I need you safe."

I nodded, my tears slowing. "I promise I won’t do it again," I said, my voice steady now. "I’ll listen to you, Kael. I’ll stay out of trouble."

He looked at me for a long moment, his eyes searching my face. Then he nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Okay," he said simply.

He leaned down and pressed his forehead to mine, his breath warm against my skin. My heart felt lighter, like the rock in my chest had crumbled away.

I closed my eyes, letting his closeness wash over me, chasing away the hurt.

He pulled back, his hand still holding mine. "I need a bath," he said, his voice tired but softer now. "It’s been a long night."

I nodded, letting go of his hand. "Okay," I said, managing a small smile. "I’ll be here."

He walked to the small bathing room attached to ours, his boots heavy on the floor. I sat back on the bed, my legs curled under me, and listened to the sound of water splashing.

My heart felt calmer, but there was still a knot in my stomach. Kyra stirred again, her voice gentle but firm. "Aria, you need to tell him the truth," she said. "Tell him you’re not Celeste. Tell him you’re Aria, his true Luna. He deserves to know."

I bit my lip, my hands twisting in my nightgown again. "I know," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "But he’s so tired, Kyra. He’s been through so much tonight. What if he gets mad again?"

"He won’t," Kyra said, her tone strong. "He loves you now. He’ll understand. But you can’t keep this secret forever. It’s eating you up."

I nodded, my eyes drifting to the bathing room door. The sound of water stopped, and Kael stepped out, his hair damp and his shirt untucked.

He looked exhausted, his eyes half-closed as he walked to the bed. He sat down heavily, kicking off his boots, and lay back against the pillows. Within moments, his breathing slowed, deep and even. He was asleep.

I stared at him, my heart aching. His face was peaceful now, the lines of anger gone. I wanted to tell him everything, about Celeste, about how I’d been pretending to be her because they forced me to.

But he was so tired, and I couldn’t bear to wake him. "I’ll tell him at dawn," I whispered to Kyra, my voice soft. "When he’s awake, when he can really listen."

Kyra was quiet for a moment, then nodded inside my mind. "Okay," she said. "But don’t wait too long, Aria. The truth will stop Seraphina madness."

I lay down beside Kael, pulling the blanket over us. His warmth was comforting, and I curled closer, my head resting near his shoulder.

The candle flickered, casting soft shadows across his face. I closed my eyes, promising myself I’d be brave when the sun rose.

For now, I let the sound of his breathing lull me, hoping dawn would bring a new start.
