Chapter 28: Chapter 28

Kael’s POV.

My boots echoed on the stone steps as Brian and I headed to the dungeon, the air becoming colder, stronger with every step.

My heart pounded, my fists clenched tight, the memory of the maid’s trembling hands and that poisoned tea burning in my mind.

Aria, my Luna, my mate, had almost drunk poison, and I’d forced it down the maid’s throat instead.

My wolf, Zeus, growled low, ready to tear into anyone who threatened her.

"Why’d you need me?" I asked Brian, my voice rough, my eyes fixed on the dark hall ahead.

"You could’ve handled the maid yourself." My arm still throbbed from the fire at the Fang Pack, and my patience was thin, my anger hot.

Brian sighed, heavy and tired, his brown eyes serious. "She won’t talk, Alpha," he said, his voice low, his steps matching mine.

"She’s acting strange, dull, like she’s dying. Keeps fading in and out." His words hit me like a punch, my stomach twisting.

I’d poured the tea down her throat, thinking it’d scare her into talking, but poison worked fast, faster than I’d expected.

My heart raced, guilt and rage mixing. Had I killed her before getting answers?

"Move," I said, my voice sharp, speeding up, my boots slamming against the stone. The dungeon’s iron door loomed ahead, its rusted bars glinting in the torchlight.

Brian pushed it open, the creak loud in the quiet, and the smell of damp stone and fear hit me.

The maid was tied to a pole, her head bowed, her body limp, her dark hair sticking to her sweaty face. She looked weak, her breaths shallow, her hands twitching against the ropes.

My chest tightened, Zeus snarling, anger burning through me. She’d tried to kill my Luna, and I needed to know why.

I stepped closer, my boots heavy, my shadow falling over her. "Look at me," I commanded, my voice hard, echoing in the small room.

She didn’t move, her head still down, and a crazed laugh spilled from her lips, sharp and wild.

My blood boiled, my patience snapping. I grabbed her chin, yanking her face up, her eyes dull but glinting with something mean.

"Why did you do it?" I growled, my voice low, dangerous. "Why’d you try to poison my Luna?"

Her lips curled, her voice weak but sharp. "She doesn’t deserve to be Luna!" she spat, her eyes flashing, her body trembling.

My wolf roared, Zeus ready to rip her apart, but I held back, my grip tight on her chin. Her words were loud, bold, but her eyes—they were lying, hiding something. She wasn’t telling the truth.

"You’re lying," I sneered, my voice cold, stepping closer, my eyes boring into hers.

"You didn’t act alone. Someone sent you." My heart pounded, my mind racing; Celeste, Thanos, Nicholas, someone was behind this, and I’d find them.

"Who was it?" I growled, my hand sliding to her neck, my fingers tightening. She choked, her eyes widening, her body shaking harder, but no words came, just gasps, her face red, her lips trembling.

Before she could answer, her body went limp, her eyes rolling back, her breath stopping. She was gone.

The poison had worked too fast, stealing her life and her secrets. My growl ripped through the room, my fist slamming into the pole beside her, the wood shaking.

"Damn it!" I roared, my chest heaving, my anger like fire in my veins. I’d lost her, lost the truth, and Aria was still in danger.

Brian stepped closer, his hand on my shoulder, his voice calm but worried. "Alpha, easy," he said, his eyes searching mine.

"We’ll find out who did this." His words were steady, but they didn’t cool my rage, didn’t stop the guilt clawing at me.

I’d killed the maid, and now we had nothing.

I turned to him, my jaw tight, my eyes burning. "Find out who she met before she went to my Luna," I commanded, my voice hard.

"Whoever sent her, I want them. Clear?" Brian nodded, bowing low, his face set, and I stormed out, my boots pounding the stone, my heart heavy with anger and fear.

The dungeon’s cold air clung to me as I climbed the steps, the torchlight flickering, my mind spinning.

Celeste’s threat to make me hate Aria, Thanos’s lie about the pen, the missing guard from the fire; it was all connected, and I was running out of time to protect my mate.

I reached the packhouse entrance, the morning sun bright but cold, the air sharp with the scent of pine.

My chest was tight, my fists clenched, my wolf pacing, restless. I needed to see Aria, to make sure she was safe, but before I could step inside, a voice cut through, mocking and sharp.

"Greetings, Alpha."

I stopped, my body tensing, and turned. My cousin Jeffery stood there, his smirk wide, his blond hair neat, his eyes glinting with fake warmth.

Behind him were his sisters, Lila and Mara, and their mother, Aunt Clara, all wearing the same forced smiles, their eyes calculating.

My stomach twisted, old anger flaring. They’d never believed I’d become Alpha after my father’s death, never thought I was strong enough.

When I took the title, their tune changed, their smiles were fake, their visits frequent, always wanting something; power, favor, a piece of my pack.

I didn’t trust them, never had, and seeing them now, after the maid, the poison, made my blood run cold.

Jeffery stepped closer, his hand reaching for my shoulder, his grin wide, like we were friends.

"Good to see you, cousin," he said, his voice smooth, too smooth.

I stepped back, my eyes narrowing, my wolf growling low. His hand froze in the air, his smile faltering.

I scoffed, my voice cold, my eyes flicking over them. Lila’s red dress was too bright, Mara’s eyes too eager, Clara’s smile too tight.

"Why are you always angry, Kael?" Jeffery asked, his voice light, teasing, but his eyes were sharp, watching for a reaction. "Is it because of me?"

I halted, turning to face them, my frown deep, my hands thrusting into my pockets to keep myself from grabbing him.

"No, Jeff," I said, my voice low, sharp. "It’s not just you. It’s all of you." My eyes swept over them, my anger hot, my chest tight.

"The worst people I know, the ones I can’t stand, show up saying they’re here to see my Luna. What’s fun about that?" My words were ice, my wolf close, his growl rumbling.

I didn’t wait for their response, didn’t care for their excuses. I turned and walked away, heading towards the dining room, my heart pounding with anger and dread.

Soon, I stormed into the dining room, my boots heavy on the polished wood floor, my heart still racing from the dungeon and my run-in with Jeffery and his family outside.

The air was thick with the smell of roasted meat and bread, but it did nothing to calm the anger burning in my chest.

My wolf, Zeus, growled low, his senses sharp after the poison scare with Aria, my Luna, my mate.

I stopped short when I saw Seraphina, my foster sister, sitting at the long dining table, her blonde hair catching the chandelier’s light, her green eyes glinting with that sly look she always had.

She was alone, her posture relaxed, but her smile was sharp, like she was waiting to stir trouble. My jaw tightened, my fists clenching.

I turned to Brian, who stood behind me, his brown eyes serious. "Go get my Luna," I said, my voice low, firm.

Brian nodded, bowing slightly, and hurried out, his steps quick on the floor.

I moved to the head of the table, the chair creaking as I sat, my eyes never leaving Seraphina.

She leaned back, her fingers tapping the table, her smile growing. Before I could speak, the door opened, and my relatives walked in; Jeffery, his sisters Lila and Mara, and their mother, Aunt Clara.

Their fake smiles made my stomach twist, their eyes greedy, like they wanted something from me, just like always.

They’d never believed I’d become Alpha after my father’s death, but now that I was, they acted like we were close, like they cared. I didn’t trust them, not one bit.

Clara sat across from Seraphina, her cold eyes scanning the room, her voice sharp and mocking. "Where’s your Luna, Kael?" she asked, her smile thin, her tone dripping with scorn. "Too busy to join us?"

"She’s on her way," I said, my voice hard, my hands gripping the chair’s arms. Zeus growled, sensing their fake concern, their hidden jabs.

I wasn’t in the mood for their games, not after the maid, the poison, the fire.

Seraphina cut in, her voice light but mean. "I’m not sure she’s coming," she said, her eyes glinting, her smile sharp.

"Her maids told me she’s scared to meet you all." She leaned forward, her words like a blade, aimed to cut.

Clara and Jeffery snapped to attention, their faces twisting. "Scared?" Clara said, her voice sharp.

"We’re not monsters." Jeffery nodded, his grin forced, his eyes darting to me, like he was testing my reaction.

My blood boiled, my wolf snarling, but I forced myself to stay calm, my jaw tight. "Like I said, she’s on her way," I growled, my eyes locking on Seraphina.

"And Sera, watch your words. You don’t want to make me mad, and you know why." My voice was low, a warning, my glare sharp enough to cut.

She knew I hadn’t forgotten her stunt at the Fang Pack, her claim on me, her lies. I wasn’t letting her start trouble now.

She rolled her eyes, her smile fading, and turned away, her fingers tapping faster on the table.
