"Tch, another failur’…"

The old man widened his eyes in surprise when he saw Hans just beside him.

He paused a bit before understanding the situation, and then said:

"Ah! To think someone as famous as you wud’ come back to mah humble place"

"Haha, cut that out old man, it’s not like I am a celebrity or something"

’No… but you are tough’

Thought the bearded man squinting his eyes.

"Well… wat do I ow’ this visit to?"

"I’ve got my hands on a pretty precious material, so I thought you would be able to handle it, but now I’m not sure"

"Uh?! Are ya doutin’ my abilities?

Let me tell ya this kid, if I can’t work with it then no one can"

Hearing him talk like this, Hans thought to himself:

’To think he’s telling the truth…

If I didn’t know it because of the status window I wouldn’t believe a single word that just came out of his mouth.’

"So? Do you have time to make something for me? I saw you’ve been up to something new"

"Oh! You saw that!? How long have ya been watching fo’?"

"A couple of hours"

"Ah, I can’t believe I didn’t notice ya"

"It must be because of your concentration, it’s truly remarkable"

"Yeah yeah.

Anyway, since ya saw that could ya give me a comment?

I heard datchu are a high-rankin’ mage"

"Mh… what you were doing you say?"

"Yeah, do ya think it’s possible?"

Previously, Hans didn’t want to interrupt the man while he was crafting that sword not only because it would’ve been quite rude of him, but also because he had a beautiful show to watch.

Usually, blacksmiths can control flames, they use their abilities to regulate the temperature and make the material softer to bend.

But that only goes as far as controlling the flames already there, since keeping the flames ablaze with their own energy would require an absurd amount of mana or aura, and there wouldn’t be any advantages.

When Hans had entered the Smithy, however, he had seen the flames heating the rod of iron, they weren’t normal flames, but a high-rank skill used by the old man.

They seemed to have a special property that removed most of the impurities from the materials, but after three hours of hard work, the sword he was working on collapsed, leaving nothing but scraps on the working bench.

"I think you could make it work"

Said Hans.

"Really?!"

Replied excitedly the old man.

"Do ya have an idea on how to do it?"

"I don’t, but I think the reason you failed was because that material’s impurities were what kept it together.

I think it was something similar to high-carbon steel, even if that material is convenient for crafting because of its hardness, you won’t be able to purify it because the impurities are what has been keeping it together.

The carbon has probably detached from the steel as soon as the process was completed, making the whole cellular structure of the material crumble."

"So? Just tell me what I should do"

"I think you should change to a material that has a higher mana conductivity, so that your flames won’t be able to damage it, and also a pure material, that isn’t a mix between other ores."

"Natural ores are too soft, I won’t be able to make a sword with ’em"

"Then how about changing for a bit, and making something that isn’t a sword"

"Sum that isn’t a sword ya say?"

"Yes, I happen to have the perfect material and the perfect item commission.

Other than that, I will get you as much money as you want"

’Once the corpses of those ice tortoises will have been sold, I’ll become rich beyond measure.

Spending a few million for a fine artifact crafted by Hephaestus is probably my best bet.’

After thinking about this offer for a while, the old man decided to hear Hans out before making any decisions.

And so, the young man took out of a little bag he was carrying around a black box.

He handed it over to the white-bearded man before saying:

"This is the material, I would like an artifact to wear.

I think you already know I’m a mage, so if you could please craft something related to my class it would help a lot."

"Huh?!"

Said the old man snatching the box from the boy’s hands.

"They are called artifacts when their rarity exceeds standards, do you think it will be easy to make sum’ like dat? Lemme see what material you’ve brought-"

As the black box opened, the shiny golden scales blinded the old man’s eyes.

"Th-these…

Are they perhaps…"

"Yes, the scales of a dragon"

"Ha... Haha… how is it that it’s dragon scales every time with ya?"

"So? What can you make out of them?"

The old man regained composure, coughing a few times as if to excuse his exaggerated reaction.

"Ion’t kno’(I don’t know)"

"These ain’t like the ones ya brought me the first time, I can tell.

I have worked many times with draconian scales, which is why I can tell… these are pure-blooded ones ain’t they?"

"Yes, why? You can’t handle them?"

"No no, I ain’t mean it like that!"

Said the man, hugging the box like a baby trying to keep his candy away from his parents.

"So? What can you make me?…"

….

’Earrings huh…’

Thought Hans while walking home.

’I didn’t think I would ever replace these ones…’

Hans touched the gold-colored earrings hanging from his ears.

"I think she will be happy for me knowing they will bring me a higher chance of survival"

The person he had worn them for wasn’t in that world anymore, but the longing he felt for her was still enough to have him wear those earrings even during the worst period of his life.

"Sigh…"

Some old memories emerged but the young man soon pushed them down once again before getting home.

As he opened the door, he found two fangs right in his face.

’Huh?’

Hans crouched, and something passed by right above his head.

The young man turned around, and seeing the beast on the ground, he said:

"Well, I guess we can’t recognize each other after such a long time, can’t we?

Here, this will help you remember."

Hans’s mana was released as he approached the white snake standing on the ground.

It took a few seconds before the hostility in the snake’s eyes subsided, leaving space for a friendly gaze.

"Haha, I guess my mana must’ve changed a lot right? You too… I can’t call you little anymore."

Hans caressed the white skin of the beast and the snake responded by climbing up the boy’s arm and resting upon his shoulder.

"Hahaha, I couldn’t believe it when I heard what you did…

Ember, you little beast, you shouldn’t have attacked Kenta, he was just taking care of you…

Hans had left the snake at the academy in the hands of Lily Adams, since being a scientist, she was the only one he deemed as reliable.

The little beast remained with her for a few months, while Hans was in Japan and training for the gate raid, but when Lily had to leave for Greenland, she didn’t know where she should’ve left the snake.

Had it been a normal pet she would just commissioned someone to keep an eye on it, but it was a full-fledged beast that acted friendly only towards her and Hans.

And so, since Hans couldn’t be contacted in any way, she asked advice from the dean.

Ava, who had heard about him and seen him with Hans, made the name of Kenta.

Just two days later, the snake was delivered to Kenya.

"Not only the branch leader position huh?!

You even had to leave me your snake!!"

He didn’t take that really well, and the snake recognized him as an enemy, attacking every time he tried to feed him.

In the end, Kenta gave up and just released the snake in Hans’s house, leaving him with enough food to last for weeks if not months.

"I’m sorry you’ve had to endure all this loneliness, how about this? I’ll take you out for a serious hunt this time"

As Hans continued to play around with the snake, his eyes were fixed on the floating window in front of him.

’He sure grew really well even without hunting.

Did Lily feed him corpses of beasts?

There is no other explanation for this growth otherwise.’
