Chapter 27: Chapter 27: It’s Actually Her

Jasper Lockwood’s dark, almond-shaped eyes rested on her for a moment before he paused and said, "There’s no need. The menu is set."

"Oh." Chloe Sterling nodded in understanding.

Jasper Lockwood’s thin lips pressed into a straight line, and he said no more.

The private room fell silent, the atmosphere growing delicate.

Chloe Sterling picked up her teacup, took a sip, and suddenly asked, "You really didn’t go see Phoebe Sinclair?"

At her words, a flicker of amusement shone in his eyes. "I was starting to think you didn’t care."

Chloe Sterling put down her teacup. "So you did go see her?"

"No," Jasper Lockwood replied.

"Then why does she keep saying you did?" Chloe asked again.

"Chloe, you can’t believe everything you hear."

Chloe’s fingers toyed with her teacup as she scoffed lightly. "That’s not necessarily true."

"Don’t you have a few friends who study computer science? It shouldn’t be too hard for them to find out if I’ve been in contact with her."

"President Lockwood’s movements aren’t that easy to track."

"Then how would you like me to prove it, Mrs. Lockwood?"

Hearing the two words "Mrs. Lockwood," Chloe Sterling was momentarily speechless. After a pause, she said, "I’ll tell you when I’ve thought of something."

....

The person Phoebe Sinclair was meeting today was none other than Serena Lockwood, the adopted daughter of the Lockwood family who had married into the Rivers Family.

"Auntie, are you pleased with the dishes here?"

Serena Lockwood smiled. "Yes, this place is indeed lovely. But I should be the one treating you. You helped the Rivers Family so much, I don’t even know how to thank you properly."

"I’m just glad you like it, Auntie. Please, don’t stand on ceremony with me. A spirit pill is certainly rare, but it’s nothing compared to Grandpa Rivers’ life." Phoebe’s expression was gentle and magnanimous. She paused, then added, "Actually, I originally wanted to invite Lynn Chester to treat Grandpa Rivers personally, but unfortunately, I was never able to find her."

"The Rivers Family has also sent out word that we’re looking for her, but this Lynn Chester is known to be eccentric. Money isn’t always enough to hire her, so it’s understandable that you couldn’t find her."

"Mm." After a moment of thought, Phoebe added, "By the way, how has Old Master Lockwood been lately? I heard President Lockwood got married, and to a woman from the countryside. Old Master Lockwood... he wasn’t angry?"

Serena Lockwood understood Phoebe Sinclair’s implication; she knew the younger woman liked Jasper Lockwood.

At one point, she had also hoped the two of them could be together, but Jasper Lockwood didn’t like Phoebe Sinclair, and that was that. She was only an adopted daughter, raised by the Lockwood family. To avoid arousing suspicion, she rarely inquired about or meddled in their affairs. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

That was why, to this day, she still didn’t know the name of the woman Jasper Lockwood married, or even what she looked like. She didn’t ask, not even when she visited the old master.

Serena Lockwood’s expression was one of helplessness. "Everyone knows Young Lord Lockwood’s temper. He’s cold, domineering, and his word is law. The old master has never been able to control him. Now that he holds all the power in the Lockwood family, whatever his purpose is for marrying a woman like that, the old master can only let him do as he pleases."

"But doesn’t Old Master Lockwood still hold twenty percent of the shares? Jasper Lockwood must have just found someone at random to marry for the sake of those shares, right?"

"Well..." Serena Lockwood’s almond-shaped eyes grew thoughtful. "I actually don’t think so."

"Then why?" Phoebe Sinclair’s tone was laced with contempt. "He can’t possibly be genuinely fond of that woman from the countryside, can he?"

"Have you met this woman? Is there nothing special about her?" Serena Lockwood asked.

After a brief pause, Phoebe Sinclair said, "Actually, Auntie, you’ve met her too."

"I have?"

"She’s the woman who treated Grandpa Rivers the other day. Her name is Chloe Sterling."

Serena Lockwood’s eyes widened in astonishment. "It’s her!"

"It is." Phoebe Sinclair continued, "And... I think the way Damian looks at her is a little strange."

Serena Lockwood looked at her, her expression returning to one of calm indifference. She smiled. "Impossible. Damian would never like her. I know my own son best."

Not wanting her intentions to be too obvious, Phoebe Sinclair didn’t press the matter. She smiled and said, "Is that so? Well, that’s good. It’s best to stay far away from a woman like that."

After dinner, Chloe Sterling and Jasper Lockwood returned to the Lockwood Residence.

Just as they entered the villa, one of Jasper’s subordinates came over to give a report. At the same time, Chloe Sterling’s phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Julian Xavier.

She walked over to the sofa, sat down, and answered, "Hello, Julian."

Hearing her, Jasper Lockwood, who had just walked over, glanced at her, his expression unreadable.

Over the phone, Julian Xavier asked, "Chloe, are you going to The Medical College tomorrow?"

Chloe Sterling replied, "I should be. What’s up?"

"I need to talk to you about something. Let’s meet at The Medical College tomorrow to discuss it. I’ll wait for you in the laboratory building."

"Okay, see you tomorrow then."

After hanging up, Chloe finally noticed Jasper Lockwood sitting beside her, staring at her without blinking. "...What’s wrong?"

There was a sour note in Jasper Lockwood’s voice. "That sounded rather familiar."

"...Isn’t it normal for friends to address each other like that?"

"Then why do you call me by my full name?"

"...You’re not my friend."

"Right, I’m not your friend." Jasper Lockwood suddenly leaned closer to her, his deep, magnetic voice carrying a hint of seduction. "In that case, shouldn’t you call me something a little more... intimate?"

Chloe Sterling looked at him, pursed her lips, and suddenly said, "It’s getting late. We should go to bed."

"..."

’This was just as he’d expected.’

At that moment, Henry Chamberlain walked over, his expression grave. "Sir, Madam, something has happened to the old master."

"What!" Chloe Sterling immediately asked, "What happened?"

"What happened?" Jasper Lockwood asked at the same time.

"Butler Dawson said the old master was fine one moment and then suddenly collapsed. The private physician is examining him now, but they haven’t found the cause yet."

Jasper Lockwood shot to his feet. "Let’s go! To the old residence!"

Chloe Sterling got up as well, grabbing his hand. "I’m going with you."

Jasper Lockwood squeezed her hand and strode outside.

Soon, the two of them arrived at the old residence.

Old Master Lockwood lay unconscious on the bed, his eyes tightly shut.

"Young Master, Young Madam," Butler Dawson said cautiously.

"What happened to my grandfather?" Jasper Lockwood demanded coldly.

"The doctor... hasn’t been able to determine the cause yet."

Chloe Sterling walked to the bedside and said to the private physician, "Step aside. Let me."

The doctor looked at her hesitantly. "Madam, you... understand medicine?"

From behind her, Jasper Lockwood’s icy voice suddenly rang out: "Step aside."

The doctor flinched and immediately stepped aside. "Yes... Please, Madam."

Chloe Sterling placed her fingers on Old Master Lockwood’s wrist to take his pulse. The pulse was extremely strange. It felt like he’d been poisoned, but not quite.

"Do you have a silver needle?" Chloe Sterling asked the doctor.

"I do. But I’ve already tried that. Old Master Lockwood isn’t poisoned." Despite saying so, the doctor retrieved a silver needle and handed it to her.

Chloe Sterling took the silver needle, but instead of pricking the old master’s skin to test his blood, she inserted it into the crown of his head.

After a moment, Chloe Sterling pulled the needle out. The tip was now black—a clear sign of poison.

Butler Dawson was shocked. "How can this be? The old master was really poisoned!"

Chloe Sterling’s eyes narrowed, her voice chilling. "It’s a specially formulated cranial neurotoxin."
