On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 159: Cold on the Outside, Warm on the Inside
Chloe Sterling clutched her phone. Just then, another message came from Jean Kensington.
"I’ve arranged things on my end. When are you heading over? This afternoon?"
After a moment of thought, Chloe Sterling replied, "Tomorrow morning. I still have some things to finish up."
Jean Kensington sent a smirking emoji: "I thought you’d be going this afternoon."
Chloe Sterling: "Obviously, you still don’t know me very well."
Jean Kensington: "......."
The two bickered for a bit. Chloe Sterling put her phone away and returned to the lab, where she worked until it was past four in the afternoon.
She glanced at the time, got up, and left.
Just as she stepped out of the laboratory building, Silas Coldwell walked toward her.
Chloe Sterling asked, "What are you doing here?"
Silas Coldwell replied, "Came to congratulate you on being cheated on."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
"Jasper Lockwood ditched you to have a private meeting with another woman, and you can stand for that? Want me to teach him a lesson for you?"
Chloe Sterling narrowed her eyes and suddenly asked, "Was this your doing?"
"Do you think I’m that bored?" It was true Silas Coldwell wasn’t behind it, but he was quite pleased. He paused, then gave a wicked grin. "How about we go get a room and start our own scandal? I guarantee Jasper Lockwood will be furious enough to drop dead."
Chloe Sterling snapped, "Get out of my way!"
Silas Coldwell said, "I’m just trying to help you. Do you really believe they’re innocent? Sweetheart, don’t be so naive."
Chloe Sterling’s expression turned serious. "I trust him."
Silas Coldwell was speechless for a moment, then said, "How long have you even known him? You can know a person’s face, but not their heart, don’t you get it!"
Chloe Sterling retorted, "And I know you even less."
Silas Coldwell: "..."
Chloe Sterling continued walking forward. Silas Coldwell kept pace with her and said, "Lynn Chester, I’ll ask you one last time. Are there no conditions under which you’ll agree to join the Nocturne Group?"
"Correct." Chloe Sterling answered affirmatively. She paused, then asked, "Is this really the last time you’re asking? Are you going back to Country E?"
Silas Coldwell’s face darkened. "Are you that eager for me to leave?"
Chloe Sterling said flatly, "Whether you leave or not is your business."
Silas Coldwell took a deep breath to compose himself, then said, "Is the deal you mentioned before still on the table? I stop fighting with Jasper Lockwood, and you give me some formulas."
Chloe Sterling glanced at him sideways. "What tricks are you trying to pull now?"
"I’m just asking if it’s still on the table or not."
"That depends on what you want."
Silas Coldwell took a step forward, blocking her path. "I want the formula for the antidote to Enchanting Fragrance."
Chloe Sterling was speechless for a moment, then said, "The deal’s off."
’She wasn’t an idiot. If she gave him the formula for the Enchanting Fragrance antidote, what would she have left to use against him?’
Silas Coldwell added, "I know what you’re worried about. But you can just upgrade Enchanting Fragrance. Once you’ve upgraded it, the antidote formula you give me won’t be able to counter you."
"Don’t worry, I won’t use this antidote against you. I know it can counteract many types of toxins, and that’s why I want it."
"Silas Coldwell..." Chloe Sterling began slowly, "Do you take me for a fool?"
"Of course not! In my heart, sweetheart, you’re the smartest girl in the whole world."
"Cut the crap. If you keep blocking my way, don’t blame me for getting physical." As she spoke, Chloe Sterling raised her hand.
Silas Coldwell: "..."
Chloe Sterling said, "Stop wasting your time on me."
With that, she strode away.
Silas Coldwell didn’t chase after her this time.
Zane Stratton walked over and asked cautiously, "Boss, what’s the plan now? Should we tell Miss Chester the real situation? Maybe she’ll help. I think Miss Chester only seems cold on the outside; deep down, she’s very compassionate. She’s even treated many people for free in the past."
"Compassion?" Silas Coldwell’s gaze turned sharp. "You’re saying I should let her pity me?"
"No, no, that’s not what I meant, sir. I meant that Lynn Chester is a person who’s warm on the inside despite her cold exterior. If she knew about the problems we’re facing, she might be willing to help."
Silas Coldwell’s eyes darkened slightly, but he said nothing.
’He wanted to pull Chloe Sterling to his side. He wanted to fight alongside her, not just ask for a favor and then have no further contact.’
’If he asked Chloe Sterling for help, she would definitely make a demand. And that demand would certainly be for him to never appear before her again.’
’No way. He wouldn’t give up on her so easily.’
After returning to The Lockwood Residence, Chloe Sterling began packing the things she would need for the next day.
Just as she finished, Jasper Lockwood called.
Chloe Sterling put the suitcase aside, walked to the sofa with her phone, and sat down before answering, "Hello."
Jasper Lockwood’s magnetic voice came through the phone, "Are you home?"
"Mhm, I’m back."
"What are you doing?"
"Packing."
"Packing? What are you packing?"
"The room. Just tidying up the room." Chloe Sterling had been about to tell Jasper Lockwood that she was also going to Maridia, but she suddenly changed her mind.
Jasper Lockwood said, "Just let the maids handle it from now on. Don’t do it yourself."
Chloe Sterling replied, "Okay."
The two chatted for a while before hanging up.
Chloe Sterling went downstairs to eat, then came back up. She took a shower, read for a bit, and went to bed early.
「The next day.」
Before the sun was up, while the butler and maids were still asleep, Chloe Sterling left with her medical kit.
It was five in the morning. The drive from Crestfall to Maridia would take about five to six hours, which meant she could arrive just before noon.
About halfway through her journey, Jean Kensington called.
"Chloe, have you left yet?"
"I have. I’m already on the road."
"Then be careful on the road. Stay safe, and call me if anything happens."
"Okay. By the way, you didn’t tell anyone else I was going to Maridia, did you?" Chloe Sterling asked.
"Nope." Jean Kensington smiled. "I know you want to keep it a secret."
「Meanwhile, in Maridia.」
Jasper Lockwood walked out of a traditional Chinese medicine clinic.
Henry Chamberlain, who was beside him, asked, "Second Master, how did it go? Could he be the madam’s master?"
A flicker of disappointment crossed Jasper Lockwood’s eyes. "Let’s go."
’They had spent two days probing and had thoroughly investigated all the information on this traditional medicine doctor. He was certain this man was not Chloe Sterling’s master.’
Noticing the disappointment in his big boss’s eyes, Henry Chamberlain didn’t ask any more questions. He asked cautiously, "So... should we return to Crestfall immediately?"
After a moment’s thought, Jasper Lockwood said, "Back to the hotel first. Then we’ll prepare to leave."
Henry Chamberlain nodded. "Yes, sir."
The two left the clinic and returned to the hotel.
Just as they entered the hotel lobby, a woman walked over and asked, "President Lockwood, how did it go? Was he the person you were looking for?"
Jasper Lockwood said, "No."
"He wasn’t!" The woman’s face fell with disappointment. "That’s such a shame. I’m sorry."
"It’s fine. Thank you, regardless."
"So, are you returning to Crestfall?"
"Yes."
"When are you leaving?"
"In a little while."
The woman was slightly taken aback, then said, "So soon? It’s already noon. Why don’t you have lunch before you go back? I’ve already booked a restaurant."
Chloe Sterling had been driving for over five hours and had just entered Maridia. Her plan was to first visit the patient to understand their condition, and then go find Jasper Lockwood.
