Chapter 12: Silas Coldwell Appears Editor: Henyee Translations

Sitting in the car, Chloe Sterling gazed out the window. She spotted a traditional pharmacy and said, "Henry, pull over up ahead, please."

"What’s wrong?" Jasper asked, turning to look at her.

"There’s a pharmacy there. I want to buy some medicinal herbs."

Jasper knew Chloe had studied traditional medicine in the countryside and quite enjoyed researching it. So he said,"I’ll go with you."

"You don’t have to come with me," Chloe said. "You should go to the office. I have a few other things to do later."

"Don’t you want to visit the office? As the wife of the CEO, you’ve never even visited it."

"Uh... let’s wait a while." Chloe wanted to wait until some certain things were settled.

After a moment of silence, Jasper said abruptly, "Chloe, I don’t want to wait too long."

Chloe’s fingers tightened slightly. "Okay."

"Why were you smoking last night?" Jasper suddenly brought up the previous night’s incident.

The topic changed so quickly that Chloe was slightly taken aback. Then, she said, "I just wanted to try it."

"Did you like it?"

"No."

"Then don’t touch them again."

Chloe had always hated people controlling or interfering with her, but this time she nodded obediently. "Okay."

The vast difference between this attitude and her defiant, rebellious behavior from the previous night surprised Jasper somewhat.

The car slowly pulled over to the side of the road. The tips of Chloe’s ears were slightly red as she gave a light cough. "I’m getting out."

Jasper chuckled softly and added, "If you don’t like having Henry follow you, I can have the driver pick you up instead."

"Okay."

Henry opened the car door from the outside. "Hello, Ma’am."

Chloe got out of the car and walked toward the pharmacy without looking back.

Only after her silhouette disappeared did Jasper order Henry to drive on.

Chloe walked into the pharmacy and listed a few medicinal herbs. The pharmacist immediately went to get them but returned with one short.

"I’m sorry, we’re temporarily out of Heavenly Star Grass. I need to get it from the storeroom. Could you please wait a moment?" the female pharmacist said apologetically.

Chloe said coolly, "Okay."

The female pharmacist immediately turned around. Chloe didn’t notice the nervous expression on her face after she turned.

About ten minutes later...

A tall, handsome figure walked into the pharmacy, followed by three subordinates.

Chloe watched the figure approach, and her brows furrowed slightly. ’Silas Coldwell is here...’

The pharmacy door closed, and three menacing-looking men stood guard at the entrance.

Silas slowly ambled up to Chloe and gave a roguish smile. "Babe, we meet again. But what’s with that expression?"

Chloe’s expression was cold, and she ignored him.

Silas seemed used to her attitude and didn’t mind. He added, "So? My idea to monitor all the traditional pharmacies was a good one, wasn’t it? I knew you’d come to a pharmacy for herbs."

"What is it you really want with me?"

"Didn’t I tell you before? Come with me, and together we’ll..."

"Impossible!" Before he could finish, Chloe cut him off mercilessly. "Don’t even think about it!"

Silas Coldwell was lost with words.

The three men at the door were so as well...

In their entire lives, they had never seen a woman dare to be so brazen in front of their boss.

Their boss was the master of the Nocturne Group. Countless powerful families and financial magnates were utterly wary of him, yet this woman had never shown him a shred of courtesy.

The crucial part was that their boss didn’t seem angry at all. If it had been anyone else, they would have been dead eight hundred times over by now!

Silas narrowed his handsome, charming eyes and said,"Babe, do you have any idea how dangerous it is to talk to me like that?"

Chloe suddenly smiled. "Silas, you know threats are useless on me."

When Chloe didn’t smile, she was as cold and radiant as a frost flower on a high peak, keeping everyone at a distance. But once she smiled, she became irresistibly enchanting. A face like that was devastatingly potent.

Combined with her heaven-defying talent for pharmacology, Silas had no choice but to dote on her.

He snorted. "You’re just taking advantage of the fact that I can’t bring myself to lay a hand on you."

"You have to have my pharmaceutical skills."

"Babe, there are plenty of top-level pharmacists in the world."

"But I’m the only one who can save your life."

Silas’s lips curved into a smile. "That is true."

If Chloe hadn’t saved him back then, he’d probably be watching her from the heavens right now.

"Babe, it’s been a while. Let’s have dinner together tonight."

"No way!" Chloe refused him mercilessly again, then added, "And stop calling me that!"

"What? Babe?" Silas smiled roguishly. "But I like calling you that. It feels so intimate."

The corner of Chloe’s mouth twitched. She ignored him and started walking toward the door.

In a flash, Silas appeared in front of her, and blocked her path. "If you don’t want dinner, how about a cup of coffee? I have something serious to discuss with you."

Chloe looked at him straight in the eye, and her tone was firm as she spoke, "Silas, I’m not going to Country E with you, and I won’t work for you."

"That’s not what I’m talking about. It’s something else," Silas explained.

"What is it?"

Looking at the woman’s stubborn expression, Silas felt helpless. He could be ruthless and cruel to anyone else, but he could never bring himself to be harsh with Chloe.

"You shall know of Jasper, the head of the Lockwood Family in Crestfall, right?"

After a few seconds’ pause, Chloe said, "I know of him."

Silas continued, "I have a grudge with this Lockwood fellow. He probably already knows I’m in Crestfall and the purpose of my trip. He might have already sent people to find you. You don’t have to come to Country E with me, but you absolutely cannot let him find you.

"This Lockwood guy is cunning and ruthless. He’s not like me, who knows how to treat a lady. If he catches you, you’ll lose a layer of skin even if you don’t die. But you don’t have to worry too much. I’ll send people to protect you. If he really dares to touch you, I’ll make the entire Lockwood Family pay with their lives!"

Chloe said coolly, "I don’t need your protection. You should go back to Country E as soon as possible. Don’t get into a conflict with Jasper."

"So you are worried about me?"

"I’m just reminding you not to lose out to him again."

Silas froze, with a little surprised. He hadn’t expected Chloe to know about the history between him and Jasper Lockwood.

His eyes flickered, and he said roguishly, "Babe, so you know all about my business. You’ve been secretly caring about me all along."

Chloe Sterling was speechless.

’How could the words be interpreted in this way...?’She wondered.

Silas added, "Don’t worry. I was just careless last time. Sooner or later, I’m going to settle this score with him!"

"So Jasper is also a reason for you to be here this time?" Chloe asked.

Silas snorted coldly. "I’ll let him off the hook this time!" After a pause, his expression turned serious. "Lynn Chester, I’ve told you before, I came here specifically for you. What I’m proposing is serious."

"As long as you’re willing to join the Nocturne Group, I’ll agree to any condition you name. I’m planning to set up a branch in the Imperial. If you don’t want to go to Country E, I’ll stay with you at the Imperial branch, right here in Crestfall. How about it?"

Lynn Chester was the name Chloe Sterling used when she was in Country E. Silas didn’t know her real name.

Chloe looked at him, and her expression was earnest and stubborn. "Silas, I will not help you research those... things."

Silas laughed in exasperation, his roguish demeanor returning. "Babe, how many times do I have to say it? I don’t want you to work for me!"

"Then what’s your motive for insisting I join the Nocturne Group?"

Silas stared at her with his beautiful, charming eyes, a wicked smile on his face. "Babe, my motive... are you really that clueless, or are you just playing dumb?"
