Nightmare Assault-Chapter 489: Go Home
“What happened then?”
“Then, they really found something in the surveillance footage!” The old man involuntarily rubbed his arms. “It didn’t look like he was pushed or carried out. He… walked out on his own!
“Around 2 am, the camera caught that elevator moving. Then, the door opened. Someone walked out. The person moved very slowly. His movements were frigid as he approached the door. When he passed by the camera, he… even stopped to smile at it!”
Wang Changguo’s face paled. The chill crawled over him as he imagined the situation.
“The doctors confirmed that it was the corpse that was lost!”
Jiang Cheng expected the corpse to come back to life. After all, this was not his first time experiencing something like that. However, what confused Jiang Cheng was why this had gone unnoticed. Even though it was midnight, there should be people on duty in the lobby. Were the staff blind?
After voicing his concern, the elder glanced at Jiang Cheng strangely. Then, he nodded. “You’re right. No one on duty noticed this. In fact, the camera recordings showed that two guards were chatting near the hospital entrance.
“And the man… I mean, the dead body just walked right through them!
“The two guards were summoned to check the footage. They were stunned. One of them broke down. They claimed that they didn’t see anyone walk past them!
“When the corpse shuffled past them, neither of them reacted.”
“What happened after that?” Jiang Cheng pressed.
“Then, the corpse disappeared from the door.” The old man explained, “He kept moving until he disappeared from the visible range of the camera.” Jiang Cheng assumed that would be where the story ended, but the old man led the story into yet another highlight.
After extinguishing the cigarette, the old man paused before adding in a trembling tone. “Soon, that dead body… was found.”
Jiang Cheng’s eyes froze.
“It was a random person’s home. One morning, a man noticed that his neighbour’s door was open. He poked his head in to take a look…” The old man said urgently, “He saw someone kneeling beside the bed, with his back to him. The man called his neighbour’s name, but he got no answer. When he walked forward to examine his neighbour, he was almost scared to death.”
After that incident, the man would probably stop being such a busybody.
Footsteps came from the corridor. Jiang Cheng turned his head and saw his teammates walk around the corner. The leader was Lin Wan ‘Er.
“You’re here.” When he saw Jiang Cheng, Cao Yang’s heart relaxed. Considering so many people were there, the old man returned to his room. He was probably worried that the nurse would discover him smoking, or even worse, tell the others about those things. Before he left, he repeatedly told Jiang Cheng not to repeat anything he had said. Then he warned Jiang Cheng to leave the hospital at once.
“Why are you here?” After the old man disappeared from his sight, Jiang Cheng turned to the rest.
“We were worried since you didn’t return after so long…” Yu Yu noticed Wang Changguo in the corner. He looked like he was wronged. “We were worried about you two.”
Unlike Yu Yu, Cao Yang didn’t give Wang Changguo any face. He ignored him.
With Jiang Cheng’s introduction, the travellers got a better understanding of the underground morgue.
“This place is so scary.” Yu Yu hugged herself. Everyone felt the journey to the morgue would not be peaceful. They glanced out the window. Soon, night would arrive.
“I think we should head there tomorrow.” Weiwei suggested, “If we go now and something happens, we might need to spend the night at the morgue.”
“Yes. Yes.” Wang Changguo agreed. “Sister Weiwei is right. We should go back and plan this out.” However, after Jiang Cheng shot Wang Changguo a look, the latter fell silent.
Even though he knew that Weiwei had a point, Jiang Cheng didn’t plan to delay this. The reason was simple. They no longer had the time. Jiang Cheng couldn’t confirm that if this world would welcome nighttime after the last ray of the sun disappeared. Plus… he felt that something was wrong. He couldn’t put his finger on it.
“Kui Yi… Why hasn’t he returned?” Yu Yu stood on tiptoe and looked out the window. That way, she could look further. Soon, the sun would set. Everyone knew how dangerous this world was at night.
“We don’t have the time to wait.” Jiang Cheng announced, “We need to figure out how the former director died as soon as possible.” In other words, they had to go to the morgue to check Zhang Zhaowei’s body and leave the morgue before sundown.
“I’ll go with you, Brother Jiang.” Cao Yang volunteered.
Yu Yu glanced at the cowering Wang Changguo. Then, she added firmly, “Mr Jiang, if you need me, I can also go with you.”
Jiang Cheng didn’t deny their kindness. He wanted to grab Wang Changguo with him, but he didn’t trust the man. If something happened down there, a distrustful teammate could cause his death.
“This time, the three of us will go together.” Jiang Cheng looked at Yu Yu and Cao Yang. “Let’s try to finish the investigation as soon as possible.”
“What about the rest of us?” Weiwei asked with concern.
“We’ll stay to wait for Kui Yi’s return,” Lin Wan ‘Er said. Then, she turned to Jiang Cheng and raised her chin. “Don’t worry. We’ll wait here for you. We won’t go anywhere.”
Jiang Cheng was worried that she would insist on following him. Thankfully, she didn’t. This was a woman who knew how to see the bigger picture. She knew that, for Jiang Cheng, having a qualified second team was more important than her being by his side.
