“Did something happen here before?” Lin Wan ‘Er enquired.

The old man hadn’t chatted for a while. When he started, he couldn’t stop. The elder’s eyes dimmed. However, when they discussed this, his expression shifted. Afraid of being interrupted, Jiang Cheng pushed the old man to a more secluded spot. This place used to be a garden. However, it had already been abandoned for some time.

The elder hesitated and sighed. “It… was twenty years ago. I was a mechanic in front of this neighbourhood. Many people don’t remember it anymore.” The old man turned to the villa and continued, “A family used to live there. The husband was a successful businessman. Unlike now, the residents here had to have both money and connections.

“The wife…” The old man reminisced. He turned to glance at Jiang Cheng. “Forgive my bluntness, but that woman was gorgeous. She was as pretty as your fiancée. Her face and body were flawless. When they first moved here, many people envied them. However, their neighbours welcomed them warmly.

“Right.” The man added, “They had a child.”

“Was it a boy or a girl?” Jiang Cheng pressed.

“A boy… He was about one when they moved here. He was cute.”

Something crossed Jiang Cheng’s eyes. It looked like disappointment.

The old man described a happy family. The husband was successful, the wife was kind, and they had a cute son. Jiang Cheng stared at the old man, waiting for the… twist. After all, something must have happened.

“Eventually, people noticed something was wrong.” The old man shook his head. “It was winter when they moved here. They wore a lot of layers. However, when spring arrived, things couldn’t be hidden anymore.

“The woman’s arms and legs were covered in bruises.” The old man lowered his voice, “They looked fresh. The man looked so gentlemanly. Who would have thought he’d do something like that? Their neighbours commented that they could hear the sounds of a woman and a child crying at night.” At this point, the man looked furious. “How… could he lay his hand on his son?”

“Were there injuries to the child?” Jiang Cheng frowned.

“Yes.” The old man nodded.

“Do you know why?”

“Why else? The woman was too pretty. There were a lot of rumours. The man suspected her of having an affair. Whenever he drank, he would get furious and hit her.”

Jiang Cheng thought the reason was too brutal.

“The man hired a nanny. He claimed the nanny was there to help his wife care for their son. Everyone knew the truth. The man hired the nanny to watch the woman.” The old man continued, “From then on, the woman basically stayed at home. Perhaps her husband forbade her from leaving home. The neighbours stopped seeing her around. However, they could still hear the woman crying and the sounds of arguments at night.”

“Did no one call the police?” Lin Wan ‘Er questioned. Her tone chilled.

The old man frowned and looked away from her. It was clear that the neighbours didn’t want to offend the rich and powerful man because of some rumours.

Lin Wan ‘Er smiled.

“What happened next?” Jiang Cheng cared more about the truth.

“Then…” The old man swallowed and whispered, “The boy… died.”

“Died?”

“Yes.” The elder clarified. “It was very sudden. When I heard the news, I was spooked.”

“How did he die?”

The old man shook his head. “I don’t know. But soon after that, the wife disappeared. People said that the man sent her to a mental hospital. She probably lost her mind because of her son’s death.” The old man sighed with regret.

It looked like the woman was the woman in Room 624. The old man said the woman’s name was Xiang Nan and the man’s was Yi Zhenliang.

The old man didn’t know much after that. He heard that Yi Zhenliang murdered Xiang Nan. As for how and where, he had no clue. He only heard the rumours. After that, people stayed away from their villa. They hurried past it because they felt that it was cursed.

Eventually, the villa was abandoned and reached its current state.

After bidding the old man farewell, Lin Wan ‘Er appeared to be intrigued by the villa. She wanted to enter it to find clues. However, Jiang Cheng rejected the idea. The villa looked creepy from the outside. There might be dangers inside. If Jiang Cheng didn’t have Lin Wan ‘Er with him, he might explore the place.

On the way back, Jiang Cheng glanced out the window. He connected what he heard to Blind Zheng’s story. He left the cab and went into the hospital.

He opened the door and saw Kui Yi and Cao Yang inside. From their expressions, they probably found something.

Jiang Cheng sat down and didn’t waste time. He shared what he found. When the women heard Xiang Nan’s story, they reacted strongly.

“Yi Zhenliang is an animal. He often beat Xiang Nan and their son!” Yu Yu gripped her fists. This was an unforgivable action.

In comparison, Kui Yi looked calmer. “I’m thinking. What is his goal?”

“I don’t think he was just venting.” Kui Yi glanced at Jiang Cheng. For some reason, he trusted the latter implicitly. Perhaps because he came to save him.
