Nightmare Assault-Chapter 478: Chance
“What can we do?” Du Feng looked at Kui Yi beside him. Even his voice trembled. The two held their breath as they hid at the corner of the first-floor stairwell. Kui Yi gripped the phone tightly. There was still enough power, but there was no signal. Different from the stairwell where Jiang Cheng’s group was, their stairwell had lost all power. Only the lights in the corridor remained on. Thanks to the light, it wasn’t completely dark, but the stairwell seemed to have been filtered in sepia.
The sound returned, and Kui Yi’s face twitched. He heard it again. The footsteps…
The footsteps began around ten minutes ago. It came from underneath them when Kui Yi finished making the call. At first, they assumed their teammates had come to find them. However, when they slowly moved downwards and approached the footsteps, Kui Yi suddenly stopped. He frowned.
At this distance, the people downstairs should have heard their footsteps already. If the people were really their teammates, what would their logical reaction be?
If Kui Yi were them, when he hadn’t discerned whether the other party were a ghost or a human, he wouldn’t have engaged them recklessly. He would stop and confirm their identity first. However, the footsteps didn’t stop. If anything, they moved more quickly than before. Were they in a rush to die?
Du Feng also realised something was wrong. He leaned over the bannister and tried to look down when Kui Yi pulled him back. The two shared a look and sneaked back upstairs. Then, the footsteps downstairs paused. Moments later, the footsteps resumed at a faster speed.
As expected!
Du Feng and Kui Yi stopped hiding. They ran upstairs. However, something despairing awaited them. The footsteps downstairs disappeared. Instead, they came from upstairs.
It sounded like a barefoot person running after them.
They ran downstairs. After this repeated several times, while the footsteps halted, Du Feng and Kui Yi went into hiding. Du Feng trembled. The fear in his eyes was palpable. The ghost was toying with them. Like a cat playing with a mouse, sometimes, it was not because the cat was hungry. It was bored. The ghost wanted them to die in extreme fear.
“Are… they not coming?” Du Feng lowered his voice, but the trembling could still be heard.
Kui Yi glanced out into the corridor. The corridor had gentle light. It was very welcoming. Most importantly, the ghost hadn’t shown up inside the corridor. Not even the footsteps.
He slowly moved his gaze. He looked at Du Feng silently. Du Feng was turned around from him. Du Feng scanned his surroundings as if the ghost could appear at any moment. Complicated emotions crossed Kui Yi’s eyes. However, a few seconds later, as the footsteps returned above them, the hesitation gave way to determination. “They are not coming.” Kui Yi announced, “We have to depend on ourselves.”
“I don’t want to die.” Du Feng also heard the footsteps from upstairs. It was the call of death. The ghost… had returned to them. He had a feeling that they would never leave this place. Despair spread. Du Feng looked up with hatred in his eyes. Damn that Nan Huaili! It was his fault!
Du Feng’s expression became ghastly as he thought about Nan Huaili. He shredded the man’s face in his mind. If not for him, why would he end up at this place? And that Mrs. Nan. That bitch had her investigate the surveillance video. That family had killed him. They deserved to die!
A hand landed on his shoulder, causing Du Feng to shiver. “Don’t be scared.” Kui Yi sounded reliable. “We will live!” Kui Yi’s hand was warm. Even though the clothes, Du Feng felt comforted.
“Brother Kui, you have to save me.” Du Feng was reminded of Kui Yi’s performance. He had been to a place like this. He had survived in the past, so he could do it again!
Kui Yi nodded as he looked into Du Feng’s eyes. The footsteps approached. They didn’t have the time to lose. “We can’t stay together.” Kui Yi glanced upwards. “There is only one ghost. We need to split up. Then, we’ll have the chance.
“I’m sure you’ve noticed that the ghost hasn’t appeared in the corridor. One of us will stay to distract the ghost, and the other can run down the corridor. Once that person leaves this place, he will go find the others to save the person staying behind. As long as he is fast…”
“I’ll do it!” Du Feng nodded with vehemence. “Brother Kui, I run fast. I’ll bring people back to save you!”
At that moment, the hesitation around Kui Yi’s eyes disappeared. “Then, I’ll place my trust in you, Du Feng.”
Du Feng withered under Kui Yi’s gaze. However, threatened by death, anything was valid. “Brother Kui,” Du Feng asked, “When do you think…”
The footsteps above them had disappeared. At that moment, the silence was scarier than the footsteps. After all, no one could tell when the footsteps would reappear.
“Now,” Kui Yi said. Without wasting time, Du Feng stood up and charged into the corridor. At first, he was worried, but as he stepped into the corridor, all his concerns disappeared. The chill that gripped his heart lifted. Even the electric light felt warm. However, if he turned back to look, he’d realise Kui Yi had been watching him with complicated emotions in his eyes. Eventually, Kui Yi disappeared into the dark.
Du Feng ran as he looked around. The nearby doors were locked and familiar. Then, it hit him. He was on the sixth floor!
Just as he turned the corner, the light in the other corridor flickered and died. Then, rushed footsteps echoed around him. Several people in patient’s scrubs rushed out of the dark. They pounced on him.
All of them… had no faces.
