New World, New Life: I Became A Bigshot In The Ancient World-Chapter 150: HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Chapter 150: HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Charlotte was a sickly child. Her father was from Amberale but her mother wasn’t. Her father was a wealthy merchant living in another kingdom and that was where he met her mother.
Because of Charlotte’s weak health, her parents took her to Amberale at a very young age to stay with her grandfather who was also a merchant since Amberale was more conducive to her health. They would occasionally visit her, but she was closer to her grandfather.
She met George for the first time when she was three years old and he was seven years old. Their grandfathers were good friends and had brought them to meet each other.
She had smiled at him, happy to meet the stranger. She usually didn’t meet much people outside of the ones she already knew. George only stared at her wordlessly without much expression on his face. That was their first meeting.
After that, they didn’t meet again as he had begun to attend the academy. The next time she saw him, she was six years old and he was ten.
She was a very quiet child but she would always speak a lot more than usual with him.
George also had begun to speak to her even though it was just a few sentences at first.
Their relationship improved since George’s grandfather would always bring him along to see her grandfather, and to her surprise, George would always come to visit on his own whenever he returned from the academy over the years.
She saw him for the last time since he began attending the academy when she was ten and he, fourteen.
Then three years later, she was thirteen years old and he was seventeen. George returned early from the academy, even before the academic year was over.
His grandfather was on his sickbed and would take his last breath at any moment. As quiet and reserved as she was, she tried as hard as she could to comfort him because she knew it was a very critical moment for him.
Like herself, George was also close to his grandfather. Charlotte knew he would be very sad even though he didn’t show it.
Her grandfather had brought her to their mansion to see his grandfather, who was a very dear friend to him. It wasn’t her first time in the mansion, but she had been there only a handful of times.
George’s parents were there, but George didn’t even glance at them. Instead, he fixed his eyes on the door to his grandfather’s room.
Charlotte had met his parents a few times, and she didn’t like them.
They were all waiting for news outside the room when the physician informed George that his grandfather wanted to see him. When George later came out of the room, his grandfather had taken his last breath. George didn’t say a word to anyone. But his eyes were cold.
His eyes met hers and he stared at her with an emotion she couldn’t decipher in his eyes, then turned away without a word and left.
She wanted to ask him what was wrong but the words remained stuck in her throat and wouldn’t make it out. She didn’t know why he had just acted like that.
Charlotte was hurt and confused, but attributed the attitude to the pain he was feeling at the loss of his dear grandfather. She couldn’t be unreasonable and think too much about it. Maybe he just wanted to be alone for a moment, she told herself. She just wished he wouldn’t shut himself in.
Unknown to her, her grandfather had a grim look in his eyes as he witnessed the look George had in his eyes.
After his grandfather’s funeral, George returned to the academy. That was the last time she saw him for two more years.
It was only when she was fifteen that she found out the reason for George’s behavior on the night of his grandfather’s death.
Her grandfather had fallen sick. He showed no signs of improvement and his health only worsened. It worsened to the point where he couldn’t get out of bed and it was obvious that he would die. Her parents and brothers had made themselves present, coming from her mother’s kingdom to her father’s kingdom.
Her father left the room her grandfather was in, and his eyes looked sad as he went to stand beside her mother. It scared Charlotte and she didn’t know what to expect.
Her father told her that her grandfather had called her into his room. It reminded her of George’s grandfather when he was on his sickbed, and the feeling of her grandfather leaving magnified.
She glanced at her family and they nodded at her encouragingly.
Slowly, she slowly approached the slightly open door, her heart beating wildly like it would leave her chest. As she entered the room, dread filled her. This would be the last time she would see her grandfather. The thought brought tears to her eyes. freeweɓnovel~cѳm
Her grandfather had always doted on her, and she was very close to him. Now that he was dying, she would have to leave Amberale with her family. She had lived in Amberale her whole life. She didn’t know how she would be able to adjust in another kingdom.
She slowly released a breath, her gaze falling on her grandfather.
The physician left the room, leaving only the both of them. Her grandfather lay frail on the bed.
"Grandfather," she called quietly, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. Her voice choked with a sob.
"Don’t be sad, my dear." He said weakly, moving his hand to gesture for her to come closer. "It will be alright." He tried to comfort her.
Charlotte moved quickly, going to sit at his side gently for fear of hurting him.
They stayed silent. Her grandfather patted her hand comfortingly. He always did that whenever she felt sad.
"I need to tell you something, dear." Her grandfather broke the silence after a while, catching her attention.
Then he told her everything.
Even before she was born, she had been betrothed to George. Her grandfather had once saved George’s grandfather and they had promised each other that their children would marry and they would be family. It hadn’t happened between their children but with their grandchildren.
She was shocked to find out that George was aware. That somewhat explained his reaction that night.
Charlotte was told that she had to marry George. That was his only wish before he died.
Her grandfather had raised her. She loved him too much to refuse, especially when he was on his deathbed, and even if she didn’t, she would still agree because... she loved George.
Her heart hurt a little when she thought about how he had not returned. He usually visited them anytime he returned from the academy but he had graduated and she hadn’t seen him even once. Did that mean he did not want this marriage? Even though Charlotte thought that, she still chose to marry him. Because she loved him... she was selfish.
Her grandfather passed away that night, leaving her heartbroken. Her parents and brothers tried to comfort her as much as they could. Her little five year old brother held her hand, trying to cheer her up and her two older brothers patted her head. None of her siblings were as close to their grandfather as she was.
They stayed behind even after her grandfather was buried to help with the arrangement of her engagement and wedding. They had all known about it except the parties involved.
She and George got engaged later that year. After the engagement, her parents and siblings stayed in Amberale until the next year when she got married before returning to her mother’s kingdom. They kept in touch through letters and would visit once or twice in a year.
After her marriage with George, he was still cold and distant. She tried her best to get him to spend time with her and warm up to her and some time after their marriage, he wasn’t as cold and distant anymore. He spoke to her a lot more than before and didn’t object to joining her for a walk in the garden or to have dinner at her request.
All that changed when she found out about his affair. She couldn’t believe that he could have done that. It hurt her so much that whenever she thought of it. So much that her heart would clench in pain and she would feel short of breath.
She had been keeping in touch with her family through letters, but she had never told them about what her husband did. Even after many months had gone by.
But now, they would know about it. It was unavoidable. She dreaded seeing their reaction when they found out that she had kept something so big from them.
Charlotte sighed. Her selfish decision had led to this. But she had already made up her mind. She would get a divorce.
