Chapter 82: Jealous

Luke sighed as he stepped out of their house, leaving them stunned into silence.

Of course, they had never spoken so openly with anyone before, and it was somewhat awkward for Luke as well, considering he wasn’t actually a doctor. Still, because of their kindness and the delicious food Nadia had served him, he wanted to help them somehow. For that, he had even gone as far as asking for Dart’s sperm to better assess the situation.

He planned to examine it using the special eye he possessed and then inform them of the results.

"Haah... things got awkward really fast," he muttered as he entered his house, only to be met with a sharp, woody fragrance.

Stepping further inside, he found Gustav and Monica standing in front of his room.

"What happened?" Luke asked, prompting the two to turn and look at him.

Monica stepped closer, worry evident on her face. "Luke... they brought your bed, so I asked them to set it up in your room. But..."

Luke frowned and moved toward his room, soon discovering the reason for her concern.

"What happened here?"

Inside, two unfamiliar men stood, both scratching their heads in confusion.

One of them turned and said, "One of the legs broke while we were moving it inside. The doorframe was just too narrow." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Luke clicked his tongue. "Then you should have been more careful. Isn’t that your job? And if you couldn’t manage it, you could have asked me whether I wanted it placed somewhere else."

The man glanced at his partner before the second one stepped forward and said politely, "Please forgive us... we should have been more careful."

Gustav huffed. "If Luke complains to the owner, your payment will definitely be cut."

The two men’s eyes widened slightly, concern and panic clear on their faces.

Luke rubbed the back of his head before asking, "Can you get it fixed?"

The man who had spoken earlier hurriedly nodded. "Yes! We know the best repairman. I swear he’ll fix it tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" Luke frowned. "Why not today?"

The transporter hesitated. "Umm... it’s already late. We wouldn’t be able to bring him now."

Luke clicked his tongue. "Then where am I supposed to sleep today?" The room was far too small to sleep in with the broken bed taking up space.

And if he tried to support it with something else, the entire frame might get damaged. This was a real mess.

The second man immediately lowered his head. "I promise I’ll bring him first thing in the morning, but please... please don’t complain to the owner."

The other one bowed as well. "We only get work because he trusts us. If he hears about this... please... we have families to support."

Luke disliked it when people tried to excuse their incompetence by bringing up their families.

But before he could respond, he felt a soft hand wrap around his.

He turned to his left and saw his mother looking at him pleadingly as she whispered, "It’s okay, Luke. Mistakes happen."

His annoyance slowly faded, and he muttered, "Really, Mother... you’re making me soft."

Monica smiled gently at that before Gustav spoke up. "You can sleep in our room, Luke."

Luke blinked in surprise. "Is there enough space?"

Gustav nodded. "Our room is the biggest in the house. We’ll manage."

Luke hummed, then turned back to the two transporters. "I need this repaired by tomorrow afternoon. If not, you won’t get your payment, and I’ll report it to the owner."

The two exchanged glances before thanking him repeatedly and leaving.

Once they were gone, Monica asked, "Do you want something to eat, Luke? I’ve prepared some roasted meat for you."

Luke shook his head. "I just had a feast. Our neighbors are really good people."

Gustav rested a hand on his waist. "You mean those two rogues? I’ve heard the man is a decent lad, but the rumors around them suggest you should be cautious, son."

Luke sighed. "They aren’t like what the rumors say. Trust me, Father. They’re genuinely kind people who just couldn’t bear to live apart. I don’t care what happened in the past, but the people I met are definitely warm and friendly."

Turning to his mother, he added, "You would love to meet Dart’s mate."

Monica smiled gently. It wasn’t like her son to speak so fondly of someone, and that alone told her those two were truly good people.

Gustav then said, "I’ll go arrange the bed. Monica, serve the food in the meantime."

Monica nodded, and the old man soon left.

She was about to step forward as well when, suddenly, a hand pulled her into the room and the door shut behind them.

Her breath hitched as she found herself pressed against the door, his arm wrapped around her waist as he said, "Sorry, I fell asleep last night, and I had to leave early this morning."

Monica sighed and cupped his cheek. "It’s okay, Luke. You were traveling all day, and today you had work."

Luke frowned slightly. "But I didn’t eat your food. I ended up feasting on someone else’s instead."

Monica lowered her head, her voice soft. "That... did make me a little jealous."

Luke grinned before pulling her even closer and giving her soft pecks on her pouty lips, soft cheeks and small chin.

"I am sorry. I won’t eat outside anymore. For me, it would only be you."

Monica smiled warmly in response before she said, "Good boy,"

Not so long after, she left since the others didn’t have dinner. Thanks to Ginna though, Monica no longer appeared in a rush to be always there for others.

Once she left, Luke stood there, heaving a sigh.

Tomorrow, he has planned a date with Roxanne. He knows where he would bring her but he never contemplated what he would tell her. Things like those tend to happen naturally.

The day after tomorrow, he was going gather some intel about the head village.

It’s about time he widens his reach a little.
